Lithuania continues to cautiously relax the applicable corona restrictions in view of the decline in new infections. In the Baltic EU country, all shops with direct access from the street will be allowed to reopen from March 15th.

Museums and galleries are also allowed to receive visitors again from this date. This was decided by the government in Vilnius. The shops have to ensure that there is an area of 20 square meters available for each customer; in museums and galleries it is 30 square meters.

Visits to the exhibition rooms, however, are restricted to groups of two people. Exceptions apply to families. Tickets can only be sold online.

In Lithuania there are probably significantly more corona deaths than previously assumed. According to the Ministry of Health, 804 previously unrecorded deaths were discovered when data from the responsible health authority were digitized.

"It was found that 324 coronavirus deaths and 480 deaths of corona-infected people with other causes were not counted," said the ministry in Vilnius.

In Lithuania, the number of new corona infections reached a peak on the first day of the partial lockdown. The health authority in Vilnius reported positive tests within 24 hours in the Baltic EU country on Saturday 1972.

So far the record was 1656 new cases. In view of the rapidly increasing numbers, the Lithuanian government in Vilnius has sent the entire country into a partial lockdown for an initial three weeks since Saturday.

Gastronomy businesses are only allowed to sell outside the home until November 29th, leisure, cultural, entertainment and sports facilities must close as much as possible, events and gatherings in public places are prohibited. Masks are also required in almost all public spaces.

In the fight against the spread of the coronavirus, Lithuania is considering re-quarantining the entire country for at least three weeks.

According to Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, this measure will be proposed to the government of the Baltic EU country on Wednesday. According to the BNS agency, he said this on Tuesday after a meeting of the Corona crisis team in Vilnius.

In mid-June, a first, repeatedly extended quarantine was lifted after the new infections found had declined over a longer period of time. The new quarantine is expected to be introduced at the weekend.

As part of efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Lithuania has set attendance limits for sporting and cultural activities and banned all other major gatherings as of Friday.

On Wednesday, the cabinet agreed to allow up to 300 spectators to attend sporting and cultural activities indoors, and up to 400 outdoors. Organizers of events would have to make sure individuals wear facemasks and maintain a distance of two meters from each other.

No standing spectators will be allowed and it will be important to register all attendees. A area of at least 10 square meters per client would have to be guaranteed for indoor shops and markets.

In view of the rapidly increasing number of corona infections, Lithuania is quarantining the three largest cities Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda (Memel) as well as five other self-governments. From Wednesday to November 11th,

protective regulations such as a mask requirement in almost all public spaces as well as stricter restrictions in cultural, leisure, entertainment and sports facilities apply. In total, 21 of the 60 municipalities in the Baltic EU country were placed under local quarantine.

The Lithuanian government also classifies a number of countries and regions worldwide as "red" (areas with high risk of infection) and "yellow zones" (areas with moderately high risk of infection). In Germany, Berlin is currently classified as "red".

Lithuania has eased corona-related entry restrictions.

From now on, the quarantine obligation only applies to people arriving from countries whose infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants has been more than 10 percent higher than in Lithuania in the past two weeks. So far the limit was 25.

According to the Ministry of Health in Vilnius, the value for Lithuania is currently 55.7. With the new regulation, travelers from 21 countries - including Germany - can enter the Baltic Sea state without having to go into quarantine at home for two weeks.

For travelers from Germany, quarantine will again apply in Lithuania from Monday. On arrival in the Baltic state, newcomers and returnees have to go into a two-week quarantine.

Lithuania is considering to build a new training facility in the west of the country to accommodate exercises of Lithuanian and NATO soldiers, according to Defence Minister Raimundas Karoblis.

The existing military training area in Pabradė is sufficient for U.S. and NATO Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) exercises, he stressed, but that leaves less space for Lithuanian troops. Therefore, there are plans to up investments into the Pabradė and Rukla training areas.

“A study is now also being done on a fairly big training area in Lithuania, which is really necessary due to those challenges I tried to describe as we and our allies are bursting at the seams together and hardly have enough space for ourselves,”
