"In The Descent of Man (1871), #Darwin suggested that #Africa was the most likely evolutionary homeland for humans because it was the continent where our closest relatives, the African apes, could be found today. However, it was to be many years before the fossil (1/5)
evidence that was ultimately to prove him right began to be discovered. Before then, #Europe with the Neanderthals, “Heidelberg Man,” and the spurious “Piltdown Man,” and #Asia with “Java Man,” were the foci of scientific attention concerning human ancestry. But the 1921 (2/5)
discovery of the Broken Hill skull in what is now #Zambia, and the 1924 discovery of the Taung skull (from South Africa), started the process that gave Africa its paramount importance in the story of human evolution, even if that process still had many years to run. By (3/5)

New paper alert! 📣🐵

As part of a special issue in Behaviour on anecdotes, we describe how an immigrant chimpanzee female adopted a local female-specific tradition after introduction to a captive group. A thread 1/8

With my wonderful co-authors @ejcvanleeuwen, @cwebb218, and Frans de Waal, we provide the first report of this tradition, we dubbed the "crossed-arm walk" (see gif), which has been present in the chimpanzee group @burgerszoo for over 20 years. 2/8
When two new females (Moni, left, and Erika, right) were introduced to the group, Moni copied the crossed-arm walk days after meeting only the resident female in the gif above. Erika never showed the behavior during >1 year of observation. 3/8 📷:@KaylaKolff Two chimpanzee females sitt...

THREAD: New hope for the Okapi Wildlife Reserve – a wildlife haven in the heart of the Congo rainforest that's under threat. (1/4) Image
Okapi Wildlife Reserve is 1.5 times the size of #Yellowstone and has:

-Largest remaining population of #okapi
-1 of the largest populations of forest #elephants in DRC
-Largest stronghold of #chimpanzees in the region
-Highest diversity of #monkeys anywhere in Africa (2/4)
Today, Okapi Wildlife Reserve is located in an area of conflict and insecurity. This conflict thrives on weak governance and rule of law, which exists across many of DRC's remote border areas. (3/4)

UNITED AT LAST
Bo and Bella, the two young female chimpanzees we rescued from Guinea Bissau in April, finally made physical contact for the first time this morning. For the past three months, the two have been living separately in quarantine 1/3
but after they were given a clean bill of health, our team allowed them to meet each other this morning. Minutes after their introduction, they were jumping playfully and chasing one another as if they have known each other for years. 2/3
Thank you to everyone who showed support to Bo and Bella during this incredible journey. We shall post more updates in the coming days. 3/3
