The #Amazon has absolutely crucial functions for the Earth's #biodiversity #climate #hydrology #carbon but is now rapidly changing! We humans are doing so at a rate that far outpaces natural processes: A thread of our Review in @ScienceMagazine

The #Amazon still covers vast areas of tropical rainforest, producing huge amounts of biomass, and concentrates at least 10% of all known plants and vertebrates on Earth. But intact ecosystems are now rapidly being reduced....(2/9) Amazon rainforest as seen in southern Venezuela. Picture by
We show that the rate of #deforestation and #degradation is much more rapid than previously throught, especially in southern Amazon. Main drivers are land-use changes, water-use changes (e.g. damming), and #climate change. These now combined are making a dangerous cocktail. (3/9) Deforestation perpetuates deepling into untouched tropical r

Pygmy Hog is the tiniest, rarest and the most #endangered of all wild #pigs globally. In fact, phylogenetic analysis of the pygmy hog revealed that it belongs to a separate genus, Porcula. It is evolutionarily unique and completely different from #boars, #warthogs, and pigs.

Known to once thrive in the lush tall and wet grassland plains of the sub #Himalayas, they were feared to be extinct in the 1960's but were “rediscovered” in the year 1971.

Pleased to share our story on Structure-Guided Design of a “Bump-and-Hole” Bromodomain-Based #Degradation Tag: BRD4-BD1-L94V #BromoTAG
We combine it with #dTAG to show simultaneous protein depletion!

XY-06-007 is a structure based designed CRBN degrader, which binds to BRD4 BD1 L94V and has limited affinity to BRD4 BD1.
Reduced binding to BRD4 BD1 translates to selective degradation of the L94V mutant in a GFP-fusion mCherry reporter line.

Why this catchment?
1. The Mkhomazi River is the 3rd largest river in KZN, with major infrastructure projects on the horizon #Water #InfrastructureDevelopment
2. It's identified as possible solution to long term water deficits in uMngeni catchment #WaterDemand #InfrastructureDevelopment

On August 7, 2019, the @IPCC_CH published Climate Change and Land, a special report that addresses greenhouse #gas emissions and their link to #desertification, #land degradation and #food #security. Image
This report is the culmination of two years of work by 107 experts from 52 countries. The report is a key scientific input at the Conference of the Parties of the #UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP14) in New Delhi this month. ruralindiaonline.org/library/resour…
About 1/4th of the Earth’s ice-free land area is subject to human-induced degradation that is an adverse land condition caused directly/indirectly by humans, leading to a long-term reduction in/ loss of,the land’s biological productivity, ecological integrity, or value to humans.

Linking land, climate and conservation, offsetting schemes "offer a means – as if by magic – to “neutralize” multiple dimensions of harm across different real-world contexts and ecologies, and across vast spatial and social distances" antipodefoundation.org/2017/11/06/acc…

"It reflects a fundamental shift from protection and conservation of ecosystems to an “economy of repair”, feeding a new regime of accumulation by restoration."
