I’ve raised the issue of those #Excluded from Government support in 6 oral questions, 7 speeches, dozens of written questions and 3 debates I’ve led. Yet progress has been minimal – hence the need for today’s debate.

It’s a waste of time for Ministers to keep up their strategy of parroting what HAS been done to support people. What matters is that gaps still exist.
The Treasury might tell us they’ve amended the RTI cut-off date – but this does nothing for those who missed out on furlough because of their roles as PAYE freelancers or annually paid limited company directors.

I've thinking about the budget in relation to the constituents whose cases I have raised in the chamber this past year
Short thread 👇1/5
5% VAT for hospitality is welcome as is the furlough extension but the reality is that furlough is costing businesses that are currently closed money - it's not the scheme they accessed a year ago. Fixed monthly costs continue and grants don't cover them 2/5
There's no actual change to Self Employment Support - it's just that more people qualify by having 19/20 tax returns. Despite the work of @APPGGapsSupport and all of the support groups - nothing for #ExcludedUK #ForgottenLtd and others 3/5

Good to see @hmtreasury is looking seriously at how to implement my proposed #windfalltax on excessive profits online giants have reaped during Covid while so many other sectors have been devastated by enforced lockdowns.

This is the right fair thing to do.

Most recently, I spoke about my #windfalltax thoughts in this #thread. ⤵️

.@bankofengland is right that our strong vaccine rollout is essential for our economic recovery. And we will undoubtedly have a big bounce as things reopen. But let’s remember that is from the very low position of being 10% down. #economy

This initial bounceback will be driven by those who have been lucky enough to maintain or grow their incomes during Covid as they splash out with their excess savings and make up for lost time. #bankofengland #economy #thread
But vaccines can’t reopen businesses already closed, save jobs already lost, pay off the debts of over-leveraged SMEs, or plug the huge holes in the finances of the unlucky 3.8m excluded from Covid income support for the past 10 months. @ExcludedUK #ExcludedUK #thread

@LBC @NickFerrariLBC @RishiSunak let me reply to your ridiculous answers as you clearly don’t understand your own schemes. The 50% rule does not mean that the majority of income is from employment and can be furloughed on that part. On directors: if a director draws a small salary and the majority...
@LBC @NickFerrariLBC @RishiSunak ..of their income via dividends. Say for example £600pm salary and £40k dividends per annum. They have a choice to furlough themselves and receive £480 pm ON THE CONDITION that they do not do any revenue generating work for their own company OR receive nothing and.....
@LBC @NickFerrariLBC @RishiSunak ...try and make their business survive. At the same time a sole trader can receive SEISS at 80% of profits AND continue to work. How exactly is that fair? Correct me if I am wrong but it seems as though you are implying that dividends are not an income. If this is true then....

I’m afraid today’s statement by @RishiSunak fell far short of what is required to save jobs.

The Tory government is threatening Scotland's economy, and risking a winter of mass redundancies, by withholding the investment and powers needed to tackle this crisis #coronavirus
The SNP has repeatedly called for a full job protection scheme but today's half measures go nowhere near far enough.

The Tory decision to scrap the furlough scheme next month puts 61,000 Scottish jobs at risk and will leave many good businesses struggling to survive.
The forgotten millions, who have been excluded from financial support schemes throughout this crisis, will continue to get little or nothing from the UK government after today’s statement.

That is completely unacceptable and shows the Tory Chancellor isn't listening. #ExcludedUK

Mental health in a pandemic- some thoughts in a thread:
1. I'm exhausted. It's impossible to switch off, and if you do, it’s very likely you would have missed an important Twitter announcement coming in at 22.30, because the government can't be bothered with press conferences.
2. We’re berated for not “staying alert” enough, "mingling" by bumping into a family on the street, but our government willingly breaks international law. Read that again. And again.
3. For a lot of people who were already at a low point, we have sunk lower.
Say goodbye to the banana bread days in March and hello to Brexit, chaos and frustration in December.
4. Hospital admissions and cases are on the up and all this is dismissed as "scaremongering" and "negativity" when it's reality. Positivity isn't pretending things don't exist.

Chair @MelJStride asks about the gaps in support in the Government's response to #coronavirus.

@RishiSunak said it's obviously the case that not everyone feels they would've been helped how they would've liked.

He added that we need to look forward.

The UK Arts & Culture scene has been dealt such a clinical, ‘perfect storm’ coup-de-grace from its own government’s policies that it’s becoming difficult to tell if much of the hardship inflicted is not intentional. #SaveTheArts
I suppose the first factor to take into account is:
1) For the most part, the Arts don’t vote Tory. By turning a blind eye to struggling Arts institutions/venues – letting them & the plethora of jobs/workers they support die – the Tories aren’t likely to lose many voters.
2) Bending over backwards to fudge the guidelines to allow pubs to open & the Premier League to operate, the Tories are pandering to their voting base demographic. By & large the voters who gave them their current majority in Parliament are not Opera-goers of Bruckner fans.
