#ClimateChange impacts all species through extreme weather events, #habitatchange & #resourcescarcity, and the #Walrus is no different. Declining ice has particularly challenged the survival of female and young walruses.

#GlobalWarming has led to a decline in the #SeaIce that walruses use to rest and access clam beds. Therefore, these mammals are being forced to crowd offshore, where clams are scarce, and the risk of stampedes is high!

Studying #biomarkers at various #foodchain levels is necessary to understand the role of sea ice in the #foodweb. Since clams are an essential part of the Walrus diet, the more they flourish, the more food walruses will have. Thus, researchers use walrus tissues as biomarkers.

We haven't seen the text (disclaimer) but nonetheless here is my pre-Christmas thread in reaction. This is a #hardBrexit deal (by design) and that means for food it is hardest of all. No rabbits out of the hat - the UK gov have followed through on their stated intent...1/
All food exports from the UK into EU will be subject to the same checks and inspections as EU imports from Russia, Chile, and yes.. Australia - this despite the fact that the UK rules will be 100% the same rules on safety, env, and animal welfare 2/ ec.europa.eu/food/animals/p…
So (eg) in 7 days all our meat, fish and dairy will require export health certs - gov estimate is 300k next year (industry thinks it will be more) that's 10x more than now (btw for most supply chains the EHC is just the last piece of paper) we have 2x as many vets to do this 3/

Celso Mendoza spent the last 2 decades of his life scratching out a living on the line at a chicken plant in Forest, MS. Though he lived humbly, he was a worker leader respected in his community. This week his life was cut tragically short by #COVID. He was 59 years old.
Celso and I first met in 2002, shortly after we both first arrived in Mississippi. As a grad student studying the poultry industry's labor practices, I had a lot to learn from Celso. As a migrant Veracruz, Mexico, he was there to work in the chicken plant for six dollars an hour.
Our friendship was an unlikely but easy one. We bonded initially over our shared love for a silly Colombian telenovela, Pedro El Escamoso. Laughing at the end of a long work day did both of us well, and over time our trust grew.

Essentially, the meat/poultry industry took no action to protect workers from #COVID, churning through them as though they’re disposable. Now that plants are shuttering due illness and death, Trump issues an order forcing workers back on the job.

Trump’s invocation of the Defense Production Act doesn’t “force” producers to stay open. It gives them cover for what they were doing anyway until local and state officials stepped in to protect these #EssentialWorkers—keep the line running at all costs.
It’s what the meat and poultry industries have always done—put profits over people. It’s why workers aren’t paid a living wage, have no paid sick leave, and are often fired when they have to miss work due to illness or taking care of a loved one.
