For EU #Sportslaw geeks, here is my short thread on the Opinion of AG @maciejszpunar and why its most important bit is not in the press release.

#EULaw #UEFA #HomegrownRule #Article165 #FreeMovement #Superleague

👇👇👇
First an element of context, AG Szpunar is not any AG at the Court, but the 'First Advocate General'. His Opinion comes after the much noted and commented Opinion of AG Rantos in the #Superleague case.
The (most) interesting bit of his Opinion in my view relates to the interpretation of Article 165 TFEU and its relationship to the European Sports Model. (See paras 48-55).

1. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19? #Brexit?

#Dogma!

I've had some very clear views since the beginning of the year on the challenges facing Travel and the difficulties ahead. I've taken a cautionary approach based on research

2. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19? #Brexit?

#Dogma!

I also happen to believe that if @GOVUK & #TravelIndustry go into a huddle with each other, on issues that directly affect #Consumers, then we should read/hear what they have discussed & have decided

3. #Travel? #Holidays? #COVID19? #Brexit?

#Dogma!

For many years I have passionately advocated #ConsumerRights & believe that @GOVUK should advocate those rights incl taking unilateral action to enforce provisions where they think the law's been broken

What I think he actually meant to say was, respecting party democracy, he would seek to overturn the @UKLabour policy of #FreeMovement at our next annual conference. Top down, policy by diktat rarely ends well.
It does raise the question - why do this now just before the Scottish elections? It simply helps the SNP galvanise their vote in 68% remain Scotland?
Post-Brexit it now seems increasingly clear the Scottish people have two clear choices before them:
1. Union with a declining imperial power, ruled by hard-right, neoliberal English nationalists - or (cont)

Erasmus was the best year of my life. I got to study/live among French students & many from around Europe. The French speaking-skills I developed that year MADE my early career.
The government's decision not to commit to keeping it is unforgivable.
PS: NO TUITION FEES IN FRANCE!
My Erasmus year was part of my Law with French Law degree.
Birmingham-Plymouth🚂 £35
Plymouth-Roscoff⛴️£50
Roscoff-Brest🚍€6

My uni classmates who studied Law with American Law:
Visa application $160
Minimum bank balance for successful visa app $16,000
Flight:$$$$
#FreeMovement
My year post-uni:
▪️ French-speaking customer services in a hotel in the French alps
▪️ French-speaking credit-controller for a roofing company in Worcester
▪️ UN Volunteer translator
All made possible by skills I got on Erasmus. Our government is stealing that from future Brits:

@alexandrabulat @TonyP12490831 Some of us have been banging on about the loss of this precious right, repeatedly, since this whole #Brexit nightmare fiasco began.

Here's an example of a thread on it:

@alexandrabulat @TonyP12490831 Stripping us of reciprocal #FreeMovement rights shows how regressive #Brexit is.

There are parallels between our country's lamentable treatment of the poor in the past (the Poor Laws from 1587 to 1967) with what the Tories are up to now:

@alexandrabulat @TonyP12490831 I've made dozens of memes to try to get the message across of just how damaging the loss of the right of #FreeMovement will be. Sometimes a picture can do more than words.

Two-thirds of Brits want to keep this right. There's no mandate for .@Conservatives to strip it from us.

@Politics_Oxford @BBCRadio4 Did Prof Tilley have full editorial control of this programme? The reason I ask is that there is an extraordinary lack of balance in the way he presents Leave & Remain voters, and so one could be forgiven for perceiving a bias against Remain voters.

/1.
@Politics_Oxford @BBCRadio4 For example, prior to the #EURef, and persisting today, was the belief amongst #Leave voters (encouraged by Leave politicians) that the UK would be forced to join an #EUarmy.

In fact, it's constitutionally impossible for this to occur. UK has a double protection.

/2.
@Politics_Oxford @BBCRadio4 This double protection against the formation of an EU Army (let alone being forced to join one) is that
(a) the decision must be unanimous per Art. 42(2) of the European Union Treaty and
(b) any move to downgrade "unanimous" to QMV must be approved unanimously!

Dear @DavidDavisMP,

We heard your answers at @LordsEUCom today and we thought you deserved your own thread.

1️⃣ You’ve apparently only just become aware of the importance of #freemovement for @BritishInEurope. Better late than never, we suppose...

2️⃣ But we do wonder if this is a little bit like how @AmberRuddHR wasn’t aware of deportation targets in @ukhomeoffice

3️⃣ Indeed, we’ve tried to tell you ourselves in person on many an occasion
