Both neighborhood and family #socioeconomic status (SES) influence children’s gray matter structure & function, but what about #whitematter (WM)? What could be some mediating mechanisms? We studied these questions in 8842 children from the #ABCD Study: medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
RSI assessed microstructure in 31 WM tracts. We looked at RND, which measured *directional* intracellular water & could reflect organized #myelin, and RNI, which measured *isotropic* intercellular water & could reflect #glia/neuron cell bodies. (fig adapted Burnor et al 2021) Image
Higher neighborhood disadvantage and lower parental education had independent links to lower RND (organized myelin) in forceps maj, corticospinal tract, and sup long fasciculus. These agree with previous findings of lower DTI-FA and lower WM integrity in low SES. Image

The Unique Regulation of Glucose and Ketosis in the Brain 🧵(1/4)
Regulatory controls are tighter in the brain than in the periphery. Glucose and glycogen regulation happens in the glia in the brain. #glia (2/4)
Ketosis can take 24-36 hours to achieve in the periphery, but the brain goes into ketosis every night. Glial glycogen stores are depleted within 6-8 hours. #ketones (3/4)

A 🧵on our work on the role of #glia in #MECFS
frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
Our paper explains why ME/CFS research may benefit from a closer look at the role of the immune system of the brain.
2/13
Many things are known about the pathobiology of ME/CFS. There is evidence for (e.g.):
- immune dysfx
- metabolic / mitochondrial / peroxisomal dysfx
- endothelial / vascular dysfx
- dysfunction of the autonomous nervous system
and the CNS in general
3/13
How do the latter dysfunctions fit together and how do they conspire to cause the symptoms of ME/CFS?
Our hypothesis: these processes can affect a very important regulatory system of our biology: the innate immune system of our brain.

Awesome study used mice + human brain organiod model to show #COVID-19 can infect the CNS/#brain, where it specifically infected radial #glia, neural stem cells + #neurons. The #virus altered the #metabolism of the neurons it infected + cld use neuron cell machinery to replicate
2/ It’s not surprising that #COVID-19 can infect neurons given the nasal cavity is connected to the #CNS via the cribriform plate, olfactory epithelium + #nerve. This led the team to state that “the brain should be considered a high-risk organ system upon #respiratory exposure”
3/ The team also showed that, at least in some #COVID-19 patients w/ #neurological symptoms, there is a robust antibody response to the #virus in the #cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In fact, CSF-containing antiviral #antibodies blocked COVID-19 infection in brain organoids

My story starts in a small town from the northern region of the warm vibrant and culturally diverse #India.
#VoicesIWS Image
Born as 3rd daughter in a culture where birth of a daughter is resented by many, my parents had to deal with 'eerie' solutions from society to get rid of the "burden" that I was about to become. But, my visionary parent-warriors had their armours on! 😇

Image
