On this #MemorialDayWeekend, at the end of another painfully long week, here’s my 78th #ScholarSunday thread of great public scholarly writing & work, podcast eps, new & forthcoming books from the week. Add more below & solidarity! #twitterstorians
Gonna start with the best thread I read this week on guns in America, @UnlawfulEntries on lessons from her “Guns, Money, & Politics” class:

As we mourn with Uvalde, also an important moment to remember the town’s inspiring activist histories (h/t @CarisAdel):

Alright señores y señoritas, after seeing the support and encouragement to continue in 2022, 365 days of supply chain is BACK...

Check out 2022 here 👇🏽
01/ Many of the cyber security vulnerabilities (zero days) in modern electronics equipment are hardware modifications inserted along the supply chain - component, assembly, or distribution level

That serves as a conduit to insert malicious software, spy, etc on the target party
02/ If Pitchbook data is remotely correct (namely not including buyout deals), 2021 was the breakout year for supply chain technology Image

I love our country and I love our soldiers. This is my country and these are my people.

But THESE people below, these people aren’t my people. They are something else. Something … unspeakable.
CNN has made the #MemorialDay rules very clear.

(1) This #MemorialDayWeekend I'm building an Americana Spotify playlist and I'll mention some of it below.

I literally was born in a (NZ) small town and I plan to be buried in a Southern USA small town. You?

(2) No playlist worth it's salt can omit some Hank Williams Jr

(3) Never forget 9/11, especially the first responders whose End Of Watch came/will come many years later due to working among toxic dust.

Heroes, every one of them.

Meanwhile, here in #Missouri:

Despite a major spike in active positive cases of #COVIDー19 in #AudrainCounty (from 22 to 46 on Friday, alone, in a county of ~25K), testing numbers **WILL NOT BE REPORTED AGAIN UNTIL MAY 26**, because of #MemorialDayWeekend.

1/
Also (per @MexLedgerCD): During this sudden uptick, Audrain Co.'s drive-thru testing site at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Mexico, Mo., "will be closed Monday in observance of #MemorialDay."

The next closest testing site is in Columbia — 40 MILES AWAY. bit.ly/2ZvGxxB

Let’s talk about the proverbial elephant in the room RE #CompassionateRelease of persons incarcerated in #prisons in the midst of #COVID19. A [long] thread with thanks to @briewsf @DrNovisky @GeriPowerMD 1/21
While a partnership between @FAMMFoundation @NACDL @WashLaw4CR is tackling petitions in the @OfficialFBOP Why don’t we see governors and other leadership extending release to many of the #vulnerable housed in state #prisons? 2/21
By #vulnerable, I mean those persons who meet #CDC guidelines for greatest risk of serious illness due to #COVID19 -- persons over 65 (#olderadults), those with #chronichealth problems including severe #asthma #liverdisease or are #immunocompromised (#hepatitis) 3/21

(1/6) A #SaturdayMorning thread this #MemorialDayWeekend to clarify some of the confusion on masks and face coverings. Follow along to get the facts & remember – I wear my mask to protect you, and you wear yours to protect me. 👇 Image
(2/6) Originally most health experts thought those who were asymptomatic (e.g. no fever or cough), had low risk of having/spreading #COVIDー19. @CDCgov now estimates 35% or more with #coronavirus DO NOT have symptoms. cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
(3/6) Wearing a face covering has always been more about protecting your neighbor than protecting yourself. But the more people who wear them, the lower the likely spread and burden of #COVID19 in YOUR community. What’s good for your neighbor is also good for you in the long run! Image

While #MemorialDayWeekend is typically an exciting kickoff to summer, please make sure to follow your state & local guidelines closely. If you have questions about #COVIDー19, be sure to visit coronavirus.gov.
Be sure to keep doing your part by practicing good hygiene, wearing face coverings to protect others and enjoying outdoor activities at a distance from others. This year’s celebrations may be a little different, but they can still be fun!
Planning to make a splash this weekend? Dive into these @CDCgov tips for enjoying the pool & preventing #COVIDー19. Practice social distancing, wear a face covering when out of the water (if over 2yrs) & limit the sharing of pool toys. Stay home if sick.

.@GovHolcomb's #coronavirus briefing is about to begin. Judging from some brief and uneventful hot mic moments, at least one topic will be the recognition that this would ordinarily be #indy500 weekend.
And sure enough, Holcomb begins by noting today would have been #CarbDay, before urging people to remember that more important, it's #MemorialDayWeekend, and to honor men and women in uniform.
Holcomb: "While we won't have a race this weekend, we hopefully will have one in August, and maybe in July as well." (July is the #Brickyard400, in theory.)

Today, @HoustonHealth reports 141 new #COVID19 cases, bringing the total case count in Houston to 6,188.

We're adding four deaths to our total increasing the number to 123.

Three white men in their 70s and a white man in his 90s. All had underlying health problems.
Like every #MemorialDayWeekend, we are bracing for crowds at our parks and public spaces.

As you commemorate #MemorialDay, please #maskup. Not only to protect yourself, but those around you. Maintain physical distancing and wash your hands.
🚨 Because of the #COVID19 public health crisis, @HPARD will NOT open 38 City of Houston swimming pools. 27 splashpads located in some of our City parks will also remain closed. 🚨

Today is my birthday.
It is also Memorial Day.
Here is my birthday wish: Please take a moment today - while you’re surrounded by loved ones, celebrating in perfect security - to remember the millions of American men & women never got to see their next birthday sacrificing for us.
They gave their lives so we could live in the greatest country in history.
We became the greatest country in the world because of the sacrifices of men & women far braver & better than the rest of us.
Their sacrifices created this incredible nation we are privileged to call home
It’s the honor of my life to be able to work with many veterans & American heroes. Their stories make America possible. Let’s remember those who gave the last, full measure of devotion to make this the best nation on earth.
Happy Memorial Day.
God bless America. 🇺🇸🦅🔥🙏🏻

This #MemorialDayWeekend I also remember LtCol Mario Carazo “Sugar Bear” - At Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan in 2010, Sugar Bear worked side by side with me planning air operations for 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing @USMC month after month, when he wasn’t flying. 1/4
Sugar Bear and I would have animated discussions about sports, or politics almost daily…but what I remember the most was he would stay up late at night so he could call his wife and kids on the phone during the daytime (their time). He was absolutely devoted to them. 2/4 Image
One day Sugar Bear never returned from his AH-1 Cobra helicopter mission, shot down by Taliban forces. I know he believed in the fight and that his service was important to our nation. He was a true patriot. 3/4

GEN HR McMaster (Ret) this #MemorialDayWeekend will be thinking of many of the fallen, including

SPC Jeffrey A. Williams, 20,
KIA Sept. 5 2005 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his combat patrol in Tal Afar, Iraq.
“Williams made the ultimate sacrifice on Sep. 5, 2005 during Operation Restoring Rights – a battle to lift the pall of fear from the people of Tall Afar, defeat the forces of terrorism and hatred, & secure Iraq and our own nation from terrorists whose brutality knows no limits.
”All of us were deeply saddened by the loss of Jeffrey. He was a larger than life young man. He was a courageous soldier who volunteered to join our security detachment. Today, thinking of Jeffrey and his ever-present smile makes me smile. He had a wonderful sense of humor.

I’d like to share a story about my friend Dee “Piston” Imlay, who died in the cockpit of his F-15E Strike Eagle during a deployment over 7 years ago.

It contains a cameo by Kelis’s #Milkshake—more on that soon.

A brief thread for #MemorialDayWeekend
I first met Piston in the F-15E fighter training unit at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, NC. It's where Strike Eagle fighter pilots and WSOs (back-seaters) go to learn to fly the jet.

We were in the same class, assigned to the 333d Fighter Squadron Lancers.

#MemorialDayWeekend
After the FTU, nearly half the class got stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. Piston and I were among them. But we went to different squadrons.

I went to the 389th Fighter Squadron (Thunderbolts), and he went to the 391st (Bold Tigers).

#MemorialDayWeekend is more than 3 days off – it’s a somber reminder of the true costs of war. Let's remember the fallen & reflect on living in a way that honors their sacrifices. I’ll be remembering my fellow IL Guardsmen like First Lt. Brian Slavenas & Staff Sgt. Bill Chaney.
I’ll be thinking about the CH-47 Chinook helicopter crew that was shot down in ‘03 near Fallujah. I’ll also be thinking about the sacrifices made by the 2 million women who’ve served in uniform during every period of conflict we’ve endured – whether or not they were recognized.
In the Vietnam War, we lost 8 women. Capt. Mary Therese Klinker was a flight nurse w/the 10th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. Her C-5A Galaxy crashed in Saigon while evacuating orphans. She was posthumously awarded the Airman’s Medal for Heroism & Meritorious Service Medal.
