[Thread] Many people say that #France does โno longerโ need #Africa. Their argument: Franceโs declining trade share in the continent, and esp. with the 14 countries still using a colonial currency controlled by the French Treasury, the #CFA #franc.
They stress in particular that Africa represents around 5% of French global trade. So, for them, this is evidence that any claim of French dependence on Africa or #neocolonialism is an exaggeration.
Their argument has a name: the โsmall ratio argumentโ (SRA). It was used by those who denied the tremendous economic impact of the slave trade on the economic development of the West. It is now used by the cheerleaders of French #neocolonialism.
While there are lots of problems with FB, Insta & co, Meta's newest project, the metaverse, sound super exciting! Looks like Meta is putting lots of money towards Oculus' #quest to build long-distance-presence solutions.

2 reasons why the Metaverse has potential:

2. Many of today's issues require coordination on a global scale. Think of the #ClimateCrisis, the #BiodiversityCrisis, overcoming #NeoColonialism and #inequality, et cetera. The Metaverse promises to make such coordination comfortable, natural and effective.

1/ When #covid19 struck the world at pandemic scale, somehow the spotlight immediately turned to the US and Europe as the "leaders" of the response. Is this not ironic when in fact Asian and African countries have far more experience w/ infectious disease outbreaks?
2/ @DrMishalK and I wrote a piece on why this flawed line of thinking has taken root (hint- it was not surprising to either of us). As researchers who work in #globalhealth on understanding #neocolonialism-- a modern application of colonial views/power dynamics...
3/ We are seeing #covid19 as another blatant example of neocolonialist, xenophobic, and outright racist (in a number of cases) ideologies that are obstructing not only the US response, but threaten to do the same to responses in low/middle income countries.

this is a long thread on #nauru, where i spent last week. nauru is currently most visible as a site for australiaโs offshore detention of asylum seekers and refugees. it is also the location of a longstanding #phosphate mine which covers over 2/3 of the island 1/22

#nauru is a beautiful island. its main resource is #phosphate. germany colonised nauru in the late 1800s and in the early 1900s the british found phosphate and started to exploit it for fertiliser and munitions with australia and nz, who became nauruโs trustees in the 1920s 3/22
