#SmallFiber #Neuropathy in #PostVac #LongCovid
I have those symptoms since 2014 - nobody ever took that serious 😭

Quote:
„Since the advent of the COVID-19 vaccines, neurologists Dr. Diane Counce & Dr. Suzanne Gazda have been seeing many novel neurological manifestations …1/x Image
among their patients.

Counce said a common neurological complication she sees is peripheral neuropathy. These are diseases that affect neurons outside of both the brain and spinal cord (‼️) - including nerves in the internal organs, limbs, and skin.
2/x
Among them, small fiber neuropathy is the most common.

Small fiber neurons detect pain and temperature, hence why small fiber neuropathy is often associated with tingling, numbness, pins-and-needles, and burning sensations.

@teaze_r @RedactedMom 1-) hEDS can not be detected w/ a genetic test. My child has an EDS gene in which I am positive that I am the one who passed it down. However they dismissed that gene mutation as a Variation of Unknown Significance, (VUS).
However scientists appear to be way ahead of that...
@teaze_r @RedactedMom 2-) ...geneticist because when I looked it up, having 1 copy of that mutated gene CAN cause problems. The mutation that I am talking about is a mutation in the COL12a1 gene. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
@teaze_r @RedactedMom 3-)... My 1st sign of having this mutation was Clinical Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. My 2nd sign was Plantar Facitus, however at the time that I started having those problems I didn't recognize either problem as being a part of something as a whole. The next sign that I can think...

Autonomic Nervous System (#ANS) Impairment
#Thread #midjourneyartwork #MedEd
1/🧵
#Dysautonomia is a condition that affects the ANS, which controls involuntary bodily functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and breathing. It can be caused by various factors, including #autoimmune diseases & viral infections like #COVID19.
2/🧵
The symptoms of #dysautonomia can vary depending on the underlying cause and can include lightheadedness, dizziness, syncope, rapid or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, gastrointestinal issues, difficulty breathing, and fatigue.

#diabetes and #Neurology
1. Peripheral #neuropathy can be the first manifestation of diabetes. 50-70% of diabetics suffer from neuropathy. Pain and burning sensation of feet are common symptoms. Numbness of feet can predispose to ulcer formation.
#WorldDiabetesDay #Medtwitter
2. Diabetes is a common risk factor of #stroke, seen in 30% of stroke cases. Diabetes leads to poorer outcome in stroke patients- longer length of hospital stay, higher risk of complications, higher risk of death due to stroke and greater disability in stroke survivors.
3. Diabetes is associated with higher risk of dementia including Alzheimer's disease. The risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and conversion of MCI to dementia is higher in diabetics. Longer duration of diabetes and uncontrolled diabetes further increase the risk of dementia.

We have an exciting new #preprint on @medrxivpreprint ! A novel class of #primaryimmunodeficiency, with the discovery of ITPR3 mutations in two families with combined immunodeficiency. As always, studying #PID teaches us so much about biology! 1/8

medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
The work is based on patients identified @UZLeuven by Rik Schrijvers and @IsabelleMeyts. Both patients had a combined #immunodeficiency with sensitivity to infections, one complicated by peripheral #neuropathy and one by #autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Over to the gene hunters! 2/8
Mutations in ITPR3 were identified by Erika Van Nieuwenhove and Frederik Staels. ITPR3 is part of a #Calcium channel, so we turned to the Serysheva lab @Irina52948708 to predict the impact on structure. Clear as day, the mutations change the charge of the channel. 3/8

“If borne out by subsequent studies, this paper will be a paradigm shift showing that #pain-sensitive #nerve cell terminals are not in fact always directly driven by a painful stimulus but instead can be driven by associated [Schwann] cells” —Prof Peter McNaughton, IC London
Here’s the formal paper 👉 Working in mice, the team discovered that Schwann cells (a type of #glial cell) can sense #pain (this was not known before!)☝️these Schwann cells wrap around nearby neurons which can further transmit pain signals to the brain: science.sciencemag.org/content/365/64… ImageImageImage
One reason the discovery interests me is b/c #infection of Schwann cells can really dysregulate their function 👉 For example mycobacterium leprae can infect Schwann cells in a manner that results in peripheral #neuropathy and even changes in ATP levels: journals.plos.org/plosntds/artic… Image

This! This article should be required reading 👉 It describes years of work by a Harvard research team☝️who are identifying new molecular mechanisms by which certain #bacteria, fungi + #viruses can directly interact w/ host neurons to escalate pain: pnas.org/content/116/26…
For example in the paper below 👉 the team found that the #bacteria S. pyogenes hijacks the body’s #pain-sensing #neurons☝️These neurons, in turn, communicate with the immune system, greatly reducing its response to the infection: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Kevin Tracey says👉”the toxins involved in microbial modulation of the host’s pain are made by a wide variety of bacteria. That makes [me] think there will be more than just a few pathogens that tweak #pain + immune responses by interacting with neurons. I predict it’ll be many.”
