I know facts can be stubborn, but one of the very first plans I released in this campaign was a plan to make things more affordable for Missourians.

🧵Allow me to break it down for you step by step:
We need to prevent another supply chain crisis like the baby formula shortage. We must prevent the next crisis by investing in American manufacturing, breaking up corporate monopolies, and ensuring our negotiated trade agreements allow for the quick import of basic necessities.
We need to increase support for American farmers and bring food prices down. This year, American farmers are slated to spend $40 billion more in farm production expenses, as compared to 2020. In the Senate, I will prioritize fixing supply chain issues that impact our farmers.

Today, our @alixgouldwerth will be discussing the labor pillar.

Labor policy is the active regulation of the labor market, including the promotion of work & return to work—so the goal is to help all people who are able to work find secure jobs that support dignified livelihoods.

John Schall: When you pay living wages as opposed to just minimum wages, it makes a world of difference. It reduces employee turnover and word gets out when you pay fair wages, benefits, paid time off, etc., making it easier to find new employees.

WATCH: Moral Monday Press Conference | Which Side Are You On Senator Manchin? #PoorPeoplesCampaign twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
Sen. Manchin is on the wrong side of poor and low-wealth people in his state and in the country.

Today we’re launching a national call-in to flood his phone lines today and all this week!

#PoorPeoplesCampaign #MoralMonday
The filibuster has been used in bad ways, and for Sen. Manchin to continue to use it is wrong.

Nothing was wrong with the For The People Act, which the late Rep. John Lewis actually wrote. We don’t need Manchin’s “Freedom to Vote Act.” Voting is a right, not a freedom.

Calls to establish a regionally adjusted federal minimum wage are dangerously misguided. There is not a county in the U.S. where an individual working full time could achieve a secure standard of living earning less than $15 per hour. epi.org/blog/calls-to-…
Raising the minimum wage to its historical peak in 1968 had no adverse effects on employment, according to new evidence. Establishing a strong national floor is easier now than in 1968 because wage differences across states have declined substantially. academic.oup.com/qje/article-ab…
A regional minimum wage would serve to normalize or tolerate existing low-wage conditions in particular regions, industries, or occupations that are largely the result of historical racism and sexism.

The American Rescue Plan that President Biden will sign tomorrow could increase income for some of America’s poor & low-income families by 20% this year. This is part of the bold action Biden promised the #PoorPeoplesCampaign last September.
While we have more work to do to make these changes permanent & address longterm inequality, President Biden & Vice President Harris have already helped shift the conversation about what is possible.
Not a single Republican was willing to join Democrats to pass this legislation, but what VP Harris said to our PPC Assembly 2 years ago is still true: ending poverty is a moral issue that can unite Americans & lift us all.

If the minimum wage had increased at the same pace as productivity growth over the last 70 years, it would be over $22 an hour today. The U.S. can certainly afford a $15 minimum wage.

A $15 minimum wage would lift pay for tens of millions of workers and help reverse decades of growing pay inequality. #RaiseTheWage #FightFor15
Low wages hurt all workers and are particularly harmful to Black workers and other workers of color, especially women of color, who make up a disproportionate share of workers who are severely underpaid. Raising the minimum wage to $15 would help narrow racial pay gaps.

The AFL-CIO supports the #AmericanRescuePlan, which the Senate will consider later this week. This emergency measure will provide $1.9T to help us beat the pandemic and provide critical economic support to millions of American families.
Millions remain out of work, families are in danger of losing their homes and communities across the country still lack the PPE, testing and vaccine distribution networks they need to stay safe.
Congress must pass this bill without delay.
The #AmericanRescuePlan includes $350B in unrestricted aid to states, counties, local governments, tribes and territories.

The current federal minimum wage is a starvation wage. It keeps families trapped in poverty, erases the dignity of their work, and allows billionaires and big corporations to exploit workers. Workers need – and deserve – a federal minimum wage of $15 an hour.
We strongly disagree with the Senate Parliamentarian's advisory ruling on the $15 minimum wage. The White House and Senate leadership can and should still include the $15 minimum wage increase in the pandemic relief package.
We cannot allow the advisory opinion of an unelected parliamentarian and Republican obstructionism stop us from delivering on our promise to voters. Workers are counting on us to #FightFor15 and finally #RaiseTheWage for millions.

THREAD: Wages grew in 2020 because low-wage workers were pushed out of the labor market. Nearly 7.9 million of the 9.6 million net job losses were among low-wage workers, while the highest-wage workers gained nearly a million jobs.

Read our new report: epi.org/publication/st…
Overall, less than 75% of low-wage workers were still working in 2020 compared with over 90% of high-wage workers. Faster wage growth between 2019 and 2020 is largely a result of the changing composition of the workforce.
Wage growth in 2020 is neither a cause for celebration nor a reason to inject fears of economic overheating into policy debates. It is not an accurate indicator of the amount of economic devastation and pain experienced by millions of workers and their families in 2020.

Proud to stand with restaurant workers, union members, and community allies from the #PoorPeoplesCampaign, @OneFairWage & more today to demand that @KyrstenSinema vote to pass a $15 minimum wage NOW.

It is essential to COVID relief + a promise that must be kept.

It cannot wait.
Haley Carrera, restaurant worker & @onefairwage AZ organizer, shared her moving story at @kyrstensinema's office today.

She recently came home w/ just $4 in tips. She held on to them as a reminder that she & millions of workers deserve so much more.

$15 with tips is the floor.
Wage Justice is Racial Justice.

One of the most powerful steps America can take toward racial justice right now is raising the minimum wage to $15.

This is a GREAT argument to pull up when talking to people about minimum wage. Some others nested below
A large number of new jobs being created are minimum to low wage, so looking for a new job generally won’t increase pay.
Raising minimum wage helps things not directly related.

Helps Infant mortality? Yup.

Lowers Suicide? Yup.

Reduce smoking rates? You bet.

Bernie Sanders became a meme, put the meme of himself on a sweatshirt, sold out, sold tshirts and stickers, raised $1.8 mil for charity, made GETTY IMAGES donate their cut, and another company donate 50 coats.

That's the guy the political/media establishment said is out touch.
And he's still spitting mad that congress can't get its shit together to help people, so he's writing a budget reconciliation bill that doesn't need Republican votes, and in the meanwhile he's planning to win a raise for 32 million workers. ImageImageImage
We're gonna use budget reconciliation for the 99%
