Wow I am overwhelmed by the amount of thoughts and emotions I have after watching @edyong209's talk at #Lind22, and I don't think I could express any of them as eloquently as Ed can. So grateful for your time tonight.
A few likely incoherent takeaways:

- #ScienceJournalism now, and especially during the pandemic, interplay of science and everything else
- Science journalism is not telling people what is happening, but helping them *make sense* of what is happening
- Science isn't just question ➡️ answer, nor a series of facts; it exists in a social framework because it exists within society
- People perhaps know more science facts now, like mRNA, but does not mean you know science as a *process*

📣 Starting this afternoon at 3:30 pm PST! Science journalist and @NPR science correspondent Richard Harris (@rrichardh) will be joining the latest #CovidTownHall in our series to discuss science reporting during a pandemic with @ucdavis students. You don't want to miss this!
Richard Harris has covered science, medicine and the environment for @NPR since 1986. His award-winning work includes reports in 2010 that revealed the US Government was vastly underestimating the amount of oil spilling from the Macondo blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. #journalism
He also shared a @PeabodyAwards with colleague Rebecca Perl for their 1994 reports about the tobacco industry’s secret documents, which showed that company scientists were well aware of the hazards of smoking. #journalism #reporting #sciencejournalism

The world expected an #influenza virus, but got #coronavirus! Here is my #thread on something new that I learnt about #pandemic #preparedness #plan. Did you know who had initiated a pandemic preparedness plan in 1999? Its @WHO :D Okay, here is what I found out! (1/n)
The WHO's plan was focused on tackling the #influenza virus, which was assumed to be the next big threat to the world. Remember #swineflu #birdflu? No harm, right? Here is what it read - who.int/influenza/prep… (2/n)
Based on this, many member countries, including #India, came up with theirs. I found a DRAFT influenza pandemic preparedness plan from India. I am not sure if this is authentic, but this has some information - medlineindia.com/influenza%20h1… (3/n)

#ESOF2018 Bridging the gap between experts and the people: rethinking #scicomm with V Ramakrishnan, @MinuDTizabi, @AlainaGLevine @weitergen...
One problem we have is this explosion of knowledge, that needs to be curated between true, incertain and not true.
We need to re establish a trust system because it is not anymore scientists->journalists->public

What can we do to make sure we get engaged advocates? We need to make sure we understand our audience
