10 things I wish they taught me in film school, #screenwriter edition. 🧵
1.Networking is a long-term game.

It might seem like getting ‘access’ to industry gatekeepers is the most important thing. It is not. Building a genuine, long-term relationship is.
2.Competitions are a tool, not a goal.

Every new writer should enter competitions, but placements are only helpful if you go out and use them to hustle.

PS: @Coverfly has a waiver program for those who can’t afford it.

So as promised, here is my #screenwriting thread on how me and @ben_lustig sold our first script together in 2014.

I’d been working with Ben for about four years. We’d been repped for two of then, and had written a couple of specs that had hit the town and not sold. We had also been dropped by our manager. Yay. 2/
I was working part-time at the Apple Store in the Beverly Center, LA. I was also driving for uber four nights a week. I had a new son, less than a year old, and me and my wife were struggling financially. Hard. Borrowing money from family to make ends meet. 3/

In the past 6 weeks, I have read over 2000 pages and provided over 100 pages of feedback on pilots, features & shorts.

Within the writing itself, here are the 9 most common issues I saw -

#screenwriting #screenwriter #writing #writingtips #WritingCommunity #screenplay #teleplay
#1/9: USING BLAND VERBS

Looks, walks, laughs, smiles, enters, exits, leaves - these are all bland verbs that don’t tell us anything about the character.

Instead, use: glances, peers, strides, ambles, giggles, cackles etc

#2/9: PITCH & PLOT THAT DON’T MATCH UP

If you set your plot, stakes, antag & protag up well in the logline, don’t spend most of the narrative to get to that point

It feels like a bait and switch and will make people put it down

@Lumikai @SaloneSehgal Most of the games fundamental building block is Screenplay, Storyboard & Plot. Do you have any seed funding program for grass root comic artists? Seed funding to 3000 individual comics artist in the search of 1% good stories is much cost effective than
spending on 3000 production artist working on a game with a story that have never been tested in the market. #game #gaming #gamedev #gamedesign #comics #funding #investors #startup #incubation #avgc #founder #screenplay #Screenwriter

Let's talk about Twitter Bios for writers/screenwriters/creators. Two groups of awesome individuals jumped on video chats this week to workshop their bios, and here's the collective knowledge. (1/?)
Right now, our bios are basically our introductions. With everything going virtual, this is how we're meeting people. They need to be professional and specific.

Other ways to think about them are as a virtual business card or a logline for who you are and what you do. (2/?)
Your photo is important. We want to be able to recognize you when we're all able to be in the same room again. (And take advantage of your banner space, too. Don't let it just be a grey box.)

As a #Screenwriter #pathinettampadi has lots to teach. The thread talks about the don't taught by the film

1. Do not make the story too complicated by introducing too many characters in the beginning
2. Do not leave the audience confused as to wondering who's against whom
3. Do not have half developed characters in the script that go nowhere
4. Do not show unrealistic but well choreographed between village students.
5. Do not show unrealistic things happening like arson, rampage etc. and police is not doing anything
#Screenwriter #pathinettampadi
6. Do not put big stars in small meaningless cameos just to attract people to the theaters
7. Do not waste time in showing story plots which remain unfinished, do not go anywhere before you come to real message (if any) in the movie, give in bits

Writing Myths #3 Writing Portfolios are the magic way into the industry!!
Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.
1/24
1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
