Learned so much in this evening's @AACI_Cancer@ webinar on physician use of social media! Dr. @fumikochino highlighted sev successful research collaborations that began via #SoMe & said that Twitter has helped a lot with the "hustle" all #MedTwitter junior faculty face.
Dr. @SyedAAhmad5, who began tweeting during the #pandemic, highlighted opportunities to expand reach of #MedEd via #SoMe. For example, he taught this to #MedStudentTwitter, then realized there was no reason the learning needed to be confined to his operating room. cc @AACI_Cancer
Drs. @Jasosamd, @fumikochino, & @SyedAAhmad5 provided examples of using #SoMe to inform #MedTwitter, #SurgTwitter, & the pt #advocacy community about one's own research, as well as to promote the work of colleagues, esp mentees.

We know from @SashaShillcutt & @JulieSilverMD’s @NEJM paper, that social media has become an important avenue for women physicians to gather, providing #WomeninMedicine new avenues to share information & experiences:

It’s been too long, it’s gone too far, and thanks to @rebeccaraesmith it’s time to make a change for the future.

2020 has been a crazy year, but it has also given us time to sit back and reflect on what can change in this universe and more specifically within our profession.
I am immensely empowered by the women in this profession who are willing to speak on their experiences or stand up for their mentees and counter parts. I am even more grateful for the men who are taking a stand along with us, your voice is just as important to promote change.
Be a part of the change #sheforshe

@RThienprayoon's tweet about this award resonated with me, though perhaps for different reasons. Like her, I had a tough early career step in #hpm #hapc. The first program chief my hospital had ever had, but isolated from a collegial network and with little local support. 1/7
Add in a late start to fellowship, and then 2 years of #miscarriage, #recurrentpregnancyloss and secondary #infertility. Those experiences made me a much better person/doctor/leader/human being, but let's be honest, weren't great for my early career leadership development. 2/7
Early #workingmomlife was a blur of hard work, sleep deprivation, disenfranchised grief, and lessons learned. The transformation was happening, but I couldn't see it. Not until I landed in a more supportive environment. #womeninmedicine 3/7

This is my commentary on #twitter #movements. Before I go I want to preface this with a statement: I love humans. We're amazing creative & powerful beings. I'm fascinated by human behaviour and the hidden motivations underlying our basic need to belong. 1/
I've observed some movements taking off on Twitter. Some for #MedEd, raising awareness, knowledge sharing, inspiration and sharing failings, wounds & triumphs. Generally they support creative expression in 280 characters. Awesome! 2/
As these movements gain momentum, more people want to join in b/c #belonging. I'm seeing a disturbing trend of sharing experiences of patients/clients to promote how deep & human they are. Some are purely intended, some not. 3/

@des_winter 5. MANELS (all male panels) remain so common in surgery it is almost not worth calling them out. However, if everyone pledged not to participate in another one they would stop tomorrow! #heforshe

@des_winter 6. Innovate to create change
University of Michigan recognized they were not attracting and retaining the best and brightest so decided to take active steps to create an inclusive culture for women. Here is what they are doing. Is it working @jdimick1?

@des_winter @jdimick1 There is more, however I will now rest my bee and bonnet and enjoy some Easter chocolate.
Thanks for starting a dialogue on this issue @des_winter. We need to make surgery a more inclusive field for women, and that will only happen if we all work together #heforshe #sheforshe
