A little thread for you all of a Sunday.

Once again I have woken up to numerous messages from fellow makers, panicked that the Christmas season is still not here.

Asking who they could contact for support.

And there is the problem, we have no one.

@LeoVaradkar
On paper we do, but let me explain how they work.

Huge PR campaign launched, costing lots of 💰 ( oh and that's your money, taxpayers money), that's good you say.

No.

The #shoplocal campaign does not boost the profile of makers. It boosts the profile of the CEO.
I happened to mention this on launch day, I did not tag the CEO or DCCOI.

I politely suggested that the campaign was wasted money and that press interviews etc should be lined up for makers and not the people who run DCCOI.

It is meant to boost our revenues.

This week I was happy to present the Canton ACE Hardware Store with a congratulatory resolution celebrating their transition to becoming an employee-owned store. ImageImage
I learned about how they are working to empower their workers & make it possible for them to get a share of the profits generated from their hard work.
Businesses that work to find alternatives to more exploitative models of economics are essential for a sustainable & equitable society.

Please do not underestimate the importance of brick-and-mortar stores like Canton ACE that value their workers & the communities they serve.

I love chocolate. Many people do. If you are a person that loves chocolate, drop what you are doing and go immediately to Ch. Cafeteria in @GrovenorYEG. (I know they are closed now but you can get in line).

Sarah, Diego, Nadia, and Victor are the owners and they are from Mexico City. They opened Ch. Cafeteria in October 2020.

Sarah, featured in the picture, told me that they wanted to create a chocolate store that had the best chocolate you have ever tasted in a casual environment. One of the owners (Sarah)Some of their delicious food on display.Other chocolate available for purchase.
She was absolutely right about the quality of the chocolate. I bought some coconut chocolate, a chocolate chai drink, and some chocolate truffles.

I’ve eaten a lot of chocolate in my life and it was some of the best chocolate I have ever had. Chai chocolate drink, chocolate truffles, and coconut chocol

This is a thread about how easy it is to #shoplocal with limited visits/contact. I decided to do nearly all my holiday shopping at local businesses largely in Main Street districts like @oldstrathcona. #supportlocalyeg /1
I started with my gift lists and figured out which stores I could get the gifts from. Then I searched each business online to determine how they were serving customers (e-commerce, pick up, delivery). /2
Once I found the stores that had online ordering, I purchased everything I wanted through their e-commerce platforms and chose to pick up (to save on shipping). /3

This is the economic impact of bookshops, jobs in towns and villages all over the country. When you shop local that money stays in the local economy. Your euro is far more valuable when spent in an Irish bookshop
Harder to quantify is the social impact of bookshops. We have so many regulars who just come in for a chat about books and well, life. These people are cut off from a vital social outlet during lockdown.
Then there are the books themselves. Book sales were strong during lockdown, helping to make the richest man in the world richer. Sadly so many books that should have got attention did not. An algorithm won't tell you about a new author, a hidden gem from a small publisher.

Off for a wee tour of Edinburgh’s local high streets to see how welcoming they are for a middle-aged woman with glasses on a bike. The more comfortable I feel, the more I’ll spend. I’ll not stop if I am close-passed/driven at or abused by a driver. Wish me luck!
Traffic jam in Porty High St (we can safely say they are not all here to shop)
Left High St for Prom - police and hordes of young people everywhere. Impossible to cycle. No money spent yet.

Let me tell you a story about buying goods from "Communist China."

When we first developed our prototype for our pillow, Mr. Pillow spent MONTHS trying to find a US mfg who would work with us. They would either laugh at him (via email) or never return his emails or phone calls in the first place.

If we weren't looking to give these outfits a $100,000+ order off the bat, they had no interest in us. (And keep in mind that TO THIS DAY we have 100% bootstrapped this thing. We have no investors. And no trust funds. BELIEVE THAT.)

Are your Community's small businesses hurting? We just had an AWESOME Community funded Stimulus event called Prime the Pump and it was INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL! And incredibly easy. Here's how we did it...

@POTUS
#PrimeThePump
#ShopLocal
#WimberleyUnited
#COVID19
#SmallBusiness
2) First, the what & the how:
Prime the Pump was for jump starting the Community shopping by pulling people out to the shops& giving them an incentive to spend.
We did this by raising money via local donations from local businesses Community members. We raised $10,000 in 5 days!
3)The only requirements were that all shoppers had to show up at the event to sign up, they would be reimbursed a set amount$ for spending at all local shops who weren't able to open during the shut down, &they have to present their receipts at a set time Mon or Tue next week.
