This year, the Cuban state shut down sanctioned #PRIDE celebrations and when people began to organize their own, they arrested two anarchist and #LGBTQ organizers, labeling them "counter-revolutionaries" and paid agents of the US, reports @BRRN_Fed.…
In #Cuba, PRIDE celebrations are run by CENESEX, which is headed by Mariela Castro, the daughter of Cuban Communist Party leader Raul Castro. This year under pressure from Church groups, the celebrations were shut down.
In response, people began to self-organize their own celebrations, events, and parades. The State banned the celebrations and broke up PRIDE after only several blocks of marching.…

@tomwatson #QuestionsForBernie Will you be accepting any PAC, SuperPAC, or corporate money? Will you continue to accept money from the NRA and/or Defense Industry, as you did the last time?
@tomwatson #QuestionsforBernie If you are mathematically eliminated from being the nominee, will you campaign for the nominee and support the party? Will you remain a Democrat if you do not win the primary?
@tomwatson #QuestionsForBernie Will you refrain from attacking the other candidates by calling them “unqualified,” “corrupt,” or otherwise attacking them? Will you run a respectful campaign?

Thread on local #racist violence & what we do now:
Recently a white male school teacher abused an 11 year old black girl student, ripping out her braids. This occurred in #MadisonWI.…
I am out of town & unable to attend the community meeting about it today, but the anti-black violence & hatred in Madison is increasingly palpable to me, as someone who has lived there less than 2 years.
@AboutFreedomInc has been fighting to get cops out of schools for over a year now. Their youth squad attends every school board meeting to share stories & ask @MMSDschools to invest in youth of color & youth with disabilities not police.

So following the criticism of recent action by @ResistersUK, I thought it was time to take a leaf out of @SamBarber1910's book & create a reference thread of *real world* violence, threats, harassment & vexatious use of the state, happening as a direct result of trans protesting.
Please RT and link any further examples, especially documented cases like those below that I'll start off with

If this takes off I'll probably reorganise the thread, but I'll stick with the tag #silencingwomen so you'll be able to find it & respond with it to TRA complaints etc.

The Service Flag of the United States #SomeGaveAll 🇺🇸😓🇺🇸😓🇺🇸😓🇺🇸😓
The Service Flag is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities the United States may be engaged in for the duration of such hostilities.
The history of the Service Flag is as patriotic and touching as the symbolism each star represents to the families that display them. ⭐️

I too lived under Section 28. I marched in Thatcher's London streets over it.

I also was arrested in NYC, Philly & DC protests because gay friends were dying & Silence=Death.

Live your smug privilege, just know you're complicit against us, not some freaking role model for us.
"I lived through it & it did me no harm."
What the bloody hell?!
The havoc wreaked by anti-gay ordinances like Section 28 ruined lives. And someone explain to @matthewtoomer that the GAY MAN who helped end WWII in the UK, #AlanTuring, killed himself b/c of anti-gay laws, FFS.
And his whole TL is full of equally smug nonsense. It's not legal to be gay or lesbian in 103 countries. There is NO protection against anti-#LGBTQ discrimination in the US.
We were silent for 100s of years and str8 folks did NOT "tolerate us," they jailed, raped and killed us.

In addition to all the #Pride this weekend saw 3x mass events: London anti-Trump; Edinburgh anti-Trump plus around 200k at Durham Miners Gala. The point is now to unite these forces into a movement...
2/ People stuck in political tribes and structures often forget the transformative power of mass demonstrations. These mobilised Labour, Green, Libdems and SNP/Plaid - plus masses of working class people from the North of England...
3/ The first question is not "how does Labour capitalise on it" - though it should; it's how do we find ways of uniting progressive forces to defend democracy, press freedom and rule of law in the face of Trump/Brexit?

I'm gonna chat for a while about what it is like to be the B in LGBTQIA. Well most of the time it feels more the b in LbG(t). #pride #bisexuality
See binary concepts are a thing which are simple to understand, so for many people they struggle to get it when you say there is more then just straight or gay! J #pride
It's tough when your sexuality gets erased and derided, esp by those who are Gay and Lesbian. J #Pride

Throughout the month of June, CIA hosted a series of events, panels, & activities celebrating the progress toward equality for members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community.
DCIA Haspel introduced Major General Tammy Smith, the highest ranking & first openly gay general in US history, at a CIA HQ event, stating: “She refused to give in to discrimination, stayed riveted on her goals, & proceeded to blaze a trail that will go down in the history books”
We once again participated in the @CapitalPrideDC Festival & the 7th annual IC Pride Summit. CIA hosted the first IC summit in 2012, which has grown each year.

1. It's #Pride, so let's talk about the God and the LGBTQ community.
2. In Genesis, we read that God created humanity in God's own image. Scripture is clear: Each of us carry within us the divine spark, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and God has pronounced this Creation "good."
3. From both science and folks' lived experience, we know that gender identity and sexual orientation are not incidental aspects of our being. They are not choices—they sit at the core of our humanity.

My latest for the @yegQuotient

"For some people the very concept of turning scrutiny to our authorities is so alien I might as well be asking them to grow a second head. Yet it was this scrutiny that laid the foundation of Edmonton’s Pride Festival."…

"the protesters this year channelled the original spirit of Pride exactly as it was conceived in 1981. It was a rally for liberation, not tolerance; its northern star was equality, not some tepid request for inclusion"…
"After taking population into account, Canada still experiences half as many police perpetrated homicides, even if they aren’t as widely publicized or recognized. It’s a fact — among many others — I have seldom seen mentioned in the debates"…

I'm one of a few million Americans awake when we should be sleeping because of the pain of #cancer or some other chronic illness.

Adding to our sleeplessness is knowing #healthcare is under threat. We may not be able to afford it due to the #GOP's actions.

It's terrorizing.
My parents were Civil Rights workers. My father was a Freedom Rider. As a small child I was taught the legacy of #MLK.
I watched people invoking MLK on Monday. Not in defense of #votingrights or in outrage over how the #SCOTUS ruled on two pivotal cases on gerrymandering.
MLK wasn't being invoked for #votingrights but for Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who lies to America every day about policies that could very well kill me & others.

Policies that are hurting millions.

Policies that have kept me a citizen without equal rights in my own country.
Read 17 tweets… We all need some good news and a pick-me-up, so here’s a story about something that’s actually going well. YA literature is forging a path for more diverse and interesting stories about LGBTQ characters than we usually get. #Pride
LGBTQ stories have often either been just stories about the closet or tragic tales that end in death. But in YA, queer characters are leads in romance stories and in sci-fi adventures. They get the same stories that are still too often exclusive to straight characters elsewhere.
The shift to more diverse stories for LGBTQ characters is a result of modern teens, as we’ve seen with the Parkland kids, being outspoken about what they want, believe, and expect to see in the world. #TheKidsAreAlright

Happy #Pride
I was expelled from my all-girls high school for being a #lesbian & put in a mental hospital for #conversiontherapy.

I became an #LGBT activist to prevent that from happening to other girls like I was.
Yet conversion therapy is still legal.

I memorialize every #lesbian who died hidden in the shadows because of #homophobia, who was forced into compulsory heterosexuality, who was made to live a lie. You deserved better. We honor you by making a safer world for lesbians today. Amen.
On #Pride I think of the #lesbian who became my mentor. She propelled me forward into lesbian #feminist writing. #AudreLorde opened a door for me I didn't know existed. I am so grateful she was in my life and left such a legacy for #lesbians.…

Oh, it's soon time to log off, so here is my final blurb for the week.

They're some thoughts I find important, and I hope they reach you.
Be kind.

Listen and learn. We all have something to say, but we must also listen to relay our message efficiently. Being an asshole or "serving" someone in a discussion doesn't gain you anything.
Check on that friend you haven't talked to in a while. Where are they now, what are they up to?

Does someone close to you sound or look sad, tired, void of emotion? Ask how they're doing, and listen. Sometimes it only takes one person to help.

1/ THREAD: A brief #LGBTHistory for this #Pride. Really FEEL THIS. Prior to the 1970s, being LGBT was ILLEGAL & homosexuality was considered a mental illness. Police would conduct a raid, arrest you, cuff you, humiliate you, then publish your name, address & photo in the paper.
2/ After your name, address & mugshot appeared in your local paper, you’d then be fired from your job. There were no legal protections--which is still true in 28 of 50 states today, but back then it was a near certainty.
3/ And then at Compton’s, at Stonewall, our LGBT forebears fought back. They said “No more" to these police raids on their communities. Along with Vietnam objectors, civil rights activists and feminists, they protested. They were targets. It was dangerous.

1. You can be trans without having hormonal therapy or gender confirmation surgery.
2. You can be trans and *not want* hormonal therapy or gender confirmation surgery.

Sally Ride
(May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012)

Sally Ride was an American physicist & astronaut. On June 18, 1983, she became the first American woman in space as part of the space shuttle Challenger mission.

Sally was born and grew up in CA. She obtained her PhD from Stanford in Physics.

Ride was one of 8,000 people who answered an ad in the Stanford student newspaper seeking female applicants for the space program. She was 1 of 35 women chosen by NASA in 1978.

After traveling to space during the Challenger mission in 1983 and 1984, Sally became the inspiration for several generations of girls,(including yours, truly) to follow their science and technology dreams, an area that had been long deemed "boys only."
