Our research team @ActionResear just completed the first phase of our water quality mapping project in Lahore. We collected and analyzed water samples from over 400 locations and discovered 6 major E.coli hotspots in the city. A 🧵. #waterquality #Lahore Image
Fecal contamination detected in water samples from Chungi Ammar Sidhu, Charar, Kirianwala, Kharas Mohalla, Mustafaabad, and Kot Khawaja Saeed. #WaterContamination #Pakistan ImageImageImageImage
Our team is moving on to the next phase of research to assess water quality in these areas by collecting a larger number of samples. We've already conducted an extensive study of Chungi Ammar Sidhu and found that 45% of the 72 samples we collected were contaminated with E.coli.

1. Hi everyone, I’m Elvira de Eyto @edeeyto , and this week I’ll be talking about long term monitoring, freshwater ecosystems, migratory fish and a bit about freshwater pearl mussels. I work at the research station in the Burrishoole catchment run by the @MarineInst Aerial view of the Marine Institute, Co. Mayo
@edeeyto @MarineInst 2. I grew up near Navan, Co. Meath, spent a good bit of time in @TCDZoology doing a degree in natural sciences followed by a PhD and subsequent research work on the ecological assessment of lakes
How can we tell what condition a lake is in ?💦

3. I did my PhD with 3 partners-in-crime @gnfree_gf @J0naf1n and Rossana Caroni, and we spent 2 years driving around 🇮🇪 with a little inflatable boat sampling many many many lakes. No camera phones in those days! 📸These are literally the only 3 photos I have of those 2 years Boat on Lough Inchiquinn, Jonathan, Gary and our boat, Elvir

Government has published proposals for new #nature targets. It's good to see the 2030 #StateofNature target to halt #wildlife decline recognised as an apex goal. Thanks to all who campaigned with us.

But overall the proposals aren't yet strong enough: wcl.org.uk/government-mus…
In particular, on biodiversity, the long-term target for wildlife (10% increase on 2030 baseline by 2042) could see species abundance *lower* in 20 years' time than it is today.

That's not in line with the Government's 25 Year Plan promise to pass on #nature in better condition.
There's no target for the condition of SSSIs, despite the previous promise (below) that 75% will be in good condition by 2042.

The target for 500k hectares of habitat creation/restoration is a gross figure and does not take account of net losses, so we could see overall loss.

Welcome to the #EnvironmentalCampaign archives.

This story is about the Hands off Point Peron @pointperon campaign against the proposed Mangles Bay marina development in Point Peron near Rockingham, Western Australia.
The campaign began in 2003, although efforts had been made from 1964 when Point (Cape) Peron was transferred from the Commonwealth to the State to be used for recreation/park lands.

The Commonwealth confirmed in 1968 that the land must not be used for private development.
In 2000 much of the land was classified as #Bushforever by the WA government.

However, in 2005 Landcorp proposed a residential and tourist marina including 500 boat pens, chalet-style accommodation and an entertainment precinct.

Today's article in @NewIndianXpress by @Madhumitha96 focusses on the #Chembarambakkam lake (largest of the four lakes of #Chennai) which has been covered with hyacinth and algae due to sewage inflow - analyzed with the help of Satellite images

This is a governance issue! Multiple agencies monitor or control different aspects of water - supply, maintenance of water bodies, sewage, storm water drains etc

Either we need 1 agency to manage all aspects of water or we need to create a framework that brings agencies together

With India facing water woes in the coming years, it is important to develop a granular understanding of the data we have on contamination. We analyzed district level contamination of groundwater sources and this is what we found.
#WaterQuality #GroundWater
This data needs to be viewed in the context of what we call "testing density" which is the number of sources of groundwater tested per square kilometer in each district. Some regions with high contamination ( like Kerala ) have high testing densities too
While this data is collected by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, the data comes from the various state governments. A high testing density may therefore be an important indicator of which states have more rigorous testing procedures and which don't.
