NEW: Our mini-report documents how, at the end of March — weeks before the #MuellerReport was released on April 18 — @TheJusticeDept’s “Special Counsel’s Office” webpage was altered: an email specifically for media inquiries was removed. sunlightfoundation.com/wp-content/upl…
An email sent to the removed address, SpecialCounselPress@usdoj.gov, results in an automatic reply: “This mailbox is no longer in use. For media inquiries regarding the Special Counsel's Office,” and listed an email address for Mueller spokesperson Peter Carr.
After delivering its report on Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential campaign to the AG, the SC’s Office began the process of closing up shop. As part of that, @Politico reports, Carr returned to his permanent media relations position in #DOJ. politico.com/story/2019/04/…
When the report was publicly released -- and media interest peaked -- no media contact information was left on the SC Office’s page. Only a general email address remains.
Though the investigation is over, members of the media are bound to still have questions about the report. The removal of the SC media inquiry email makes it difficult to know who at DOJ to contact with questions and how to do so.
Given that the SC page has already changed and the team is moving on to new work, we’re reminded of other important web governance questions. Will the page be maintained and will other information and documents listed on the page be preserved? Will the page be properly archived?
