Citation counts come from OTHER RESEARCHERS. They are important, yes.

But, sharing #science on #SoMe=broad & instantaneous dissemination to those who focus their time AT THE BEDSIDE. Which may surprise some- but is MOST OF MEDICINE especially....#anesthesiology.(Thread) #AUA2019
A metric like the “Kardashian Index” *MAY* be relevant in genome biology where the proportion of basic/translational science is significantly higher and no immediate bedside application for a general practitioner is there. (and I’m making an assumption here) #medtwitter #aua2019
When your #research is relevant primarily to other #scientists who are also writing research papers then citation counts do more wholly reflect the paper’s impact. But in clinical research, it’s different. Bedside clinicians are looking to the literature for guidance & new ideas.
Let’s use an example from my own papers:
#PedsICU diaries in @PedCritCareMed : bit.ly/2w102OH

vs.

World #sedation practices in #PedsICU in @CritCareMed : bit.ly/2S38wO9

#medtwitter #AUA2019
Diary paper (2019)- 2 cites, Altmetric 34

Sedation practices (2014)- 112 cites, Altmetric 18

The diary paper will never achieve the cites of the #sedation paper... why? #scicomm #medtwitter
There are hundreds of #PedsICU peeps researching topics related to #sedation and citing that survey in their own papers.

How many people will be publishing research on #PedsICU diaries 7 years from now and citing that paper? Not as many.

Then..why is the diary paper relevant?
I receive at least 5 emails/week from BEDSIDE clinicians: #nurses, #nurse practitioners, physicians, social workers, #hpm, #childlife- #multidisciplinary teams who are using that paper to guide implementation of their own diary programs.

Newsflash: Most will not cite it. Why?
They are too busy TAKING CARE OF PATIENTS AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT THE BEDSIDE TO PUBLISH RESEARCH CITING THE PAPER. #medtwitter #scicomm #AUA2019
Are those cites I’m willing to part with?
I don’t know the context in which the “Kardashian Index” was brought up at #AUA2019 but I find it ironic such a heavily clinical specialty, where our #research directly impacts so many bedside clinicians- #CRNAs #anesthesiologists #ICU is putting down #scicomm on #medtwitter
There is so much #research out there that has the potential for great clinical impact- that is not reaching the ears of those who can change practice at the bedside. That is why #scicomm in #medtwitter is a RESPONSIBILITY.
