1/ As an OBGYN, it's important to address misconceptions. Let's clear this up: Birth control DOES NOT cause abortion. Birth control methods like pills, patches, and IUDs work by preventing ovulation and/or fertilization. #ClearingTheAir #BirthControlFacts
2/ Understanding the science behind birth control is crucial. Why? Because groups like @StudentsforLife spread lies that BC causes abortions - and trust me, the right is coming for #birthcontrol next. #ScienceMatters #BirthControlFacts
@StudentsforLife 3/ Abortion involves the termination of an established pregnancy, whereas birth control prevents pregnancy from occurring in the first place. The two are distinct and separate methods. #ScienceMatters #BirthControlFacts

”She's moody, probably because she's a teenage girl, but could it be the #BirthControl?”
"She's acting so hormonal."
"Her moods are crazy, she's PMSing all the time."
Moods have nothing to do with #gender and sex hormones! These #stereotypes only perpetuate #bias. 🧵 #MedTwitter
Let's start with #hormones. Hormones are chemicals released by certain organs that carry messages to other organs. Everyone has hormones. Changes in hormone levels can affect our moods but having hormones does not make someone moody.
The reproductive (and other) organs produce the sex hormones (#progesterone, #estrogen, and #testosterone) in all people, just in different quantities. These levels can vary throughout the day and over time.

Thread on Row Vs Wade:
This decision effects more than just women. It effects all of us. Our body autonomy has been stolen and we have seen the blueprint for the removal of many more.
#Anonymous #OpJane #Op0H8 #OpLove
It is ok to be angry and scared. It is ok to want to run and hide or stand and fight. It is ok to hate the government. It is ok to want to throw feces at the face of every lawmaker. They did not protect us. They did not do what they promised and they were duped by the .@GOP .
I understand that today's decision with create a larger divide amongst us. This decision is one of life and death for our daughters, sisters, aunts, and mothers. Combined with the #SCOTUS gun decision, It is ok to feel more terrified.

There are so many ridiculous claims about what will happen if #RoeVsWade is overturned #RoeOverturned #RoeVWadeLeak. Treatment for miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies will not be criminalized or investigated. Those are not the same as abortion.🧵
None of the states have laws on the books that would prosecute a woman who has an abortion and the few times some radical has proposed such a law, it's been easily voted down.
No states have a law making abortion illegal if it is necessary to save a woman's life and it is extremely unlikely any ever will, given public opinion overwhelmingly supports that exception.

This leaked SCOTUS opinion on #RoeVWade and its impact on Missouri has caused A LOT of fear and confusion (and rightfully so!)- particularly questions about IVF, birth control, and Emergency Contraception. So we’re here to clear some things up for Missourians. (A thread🧵)
MO has a “trigger ban” on the books that will take effect if Roe is overturned. What does this mean? Docs in MO will not be allowed to provide abortions & people seeking abortions will be forced to either flee the state to get abortions or carry a pregnancy against their will.
Just the facts: Current Missouri abortion law does NOT jeopardize #BirthControl (like IUDs), Emergency Contraception (EC or"Plan B") or fertility care (IVF), and neither do any of the bans we're currently watching in #MoLeg.

There's actually nothing special about Sunday. It doesn't matter what day your period starts and you don't have to start your #BirthControl the Sunday after your period starts. 🧵
#MedTwitter #tweetorial #obgyntwitter
Usually I tell people to start the first day of the period or as soon as they pick up the prescription. Starting during the period decreases risk of breakthrough bleeding and starting immediately gets them protected against pregnancy asap (and often makes next period lighter).
Pill packs come with these handy stickers so it's easy to change the labels to remember what day they're on.

I think its time to talk about #ReligiousFreedom and exactly where one person’s #freedom starts, and another’s ends. And no I’m not talking about a woman’s body dividing cells, I’m talking about breathing adults who #vote
#ReligiousFreedom is SO important to everybody. And I agree that I ALSO want my own #FreedomOfReligion. But other people DON’T get to define that.
I am in charge of my own #belief systems. You could even say I’m RESPONSIBLE for them🤔
#AmericanTaliban
No matter how wacky they got, the point in time where I am no longer allowed to practice my #Religion, would start IF it harmed another breathing adult, and that word #harm is pretty loaded too, isn’t it?
How do we define #Freedom?
How do we define #Life?
#Happiness??

I support #MedicareForAll. It's why I supported @berniesanders. It's why I co-authored "Medicare for All: A Citizen's Guide" w/ @micah_johnson_.

And it's also why I agreed when Bernie asked me to join the Unity Task Force on healthcare.

A thread:

1/
Joe Biden isn't Bernie. He does not support #MedicareforAll—we deeply disagree on this.

But he does support universal coverage, expanding public coverage, reining in Pharma, & health equity—things we DO agree on.

Our Task Force recommendations build upon these aims.

2/
Our Task Force worked hard & I'm grateful to the team & Co-Chairs @PramilaJayapal & @vivek_murthy.

We didn't agree on everything, but we came to recommendations that will yield one of the most progressive Dem campaign platforms in history-tho we have further yet to go.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Trump-Pence rules allowing nearly any employer and university to deny #birthcontrol coverage to their employees and students. #HandsOffMyBC

A statement from our Senior Vice President of U.S. Programs, @LourdesARivera, on this decision:
“Contraception should not be singled out from the rest of health insurance coverage.”

#HandsOffMyBC
“Today’s ruling has given bosses the power to dictate how their employees can and cannot use their health insurance—allowing them to intrude into their employees’ private decisions based on whatever personal beliefs their employers happen to hold.”

#MargaretSanger wanted to use birth control to restrict pregnancy only to husbands and wives approved by the government. She was pro-sterilization of the "unfit" and pro-eugenics. nyu.edu/projects/sange…
While pro-eugenics, Sanger was actually anti-abortion, “[a]lthough abortion may be resorted to in order to save the life of the mother, the practice of it merely for limitation of offspring is dangerous and vicious.” nyu.edu/projects/sange…
Sanger also wrote "Birth Control will prevent abortion.... It will put an end to the tens of thousands of illegal operations to which women resort in despair. Mothers will not submit to the MURDER OF UNBORN CHILDREN when they can control conception." bit.ly/2pYSj4e

Sometimes, things work like this:

school closings → homelessness → human trafficking

#COVID19 [Thread]
Folks like @CovenantHouse and others have researched & well documented the link between homelessness & human trafficking. covenanthouse.org/homeless-issue…
Much like folks who claim they hate abortion — yet refuse to fund and promote #SexEd, #birthcontrol , etc. — we can't stop the spread of #Covid_19 unless we also support a safety net that includes #PaidSickLeave, #MedicareForAll, mortgage & student loan relief, etc.

Hey queens, spending your weekend with bae doesn't have to be so scary if you know how to protect your castle.

A THREAD!

#Contraceptives

#BirthControl
Sex can be fun, pleasurable and beautiful; but the aftermath sometimes can be unpleasant especially when you know that you didn't secure your 'territory' during the fun ride.

So, let's talk about what you need to do to have peace of mind before or after a GREAT weekend with bae.
CONTRACEPTIVES can help put your mind at rest. - Contraception is any method, medicine or device used to prevent or manage pregnancy.

Sex is best enjoyed with contraceptives. They help you say goodbye to every fear of unwanted pregnancy.

In 1965, #SCOTUS struck down a law which banned the use of “any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purpose of preventing conception” in Griswold v. Connecticut.
That means in my lifetime, we have progressed from outright bans on #birthcontrol to affordable, accessible contraceptive care.
And now, those same forces are trying to take us back. Make no mistake, the wave of attacks on birth control, abortion care, #TitleX, and the #ACA are all connected.

1/4 Hey #sexstrike Think you can just avoid pregnancy with an elective #hysterectomy? Think again. You don't get to get to make those decisions for yourself either. My 3rd high risk pregnancy in a row became an early emergency c-section… #moleg #hb126 #reprorights #stopthebans
2/4 I /my child had to almost die before Dr's would consider hysterectomy (post recovery). I was so scared of getting pregnant again, we had infrequent & wary sex until the operation was performed. Stop robbing women of freedom #moleg #sexstrike #hb126 #reprorights #stopthebans
3/4 Living in fear of unintended pregnancy robs you of personal #freedom. The only thing you CAN do to 100% prevent pregnancy? Not have sex. I didn’t want to die & couldn’t take #birthcontrol. #moleg #hb126 would rob my kids of their mom #sexstrike #reprorights #stopthebans

And you call yourself a feminist.

Please take a minute and ask yourself why you don’t seem to have room in your feminism for ppl who need more than one abortion (and who aren’t ashamed). There are all kinds of reasons ppl might need >1 abortion (I feel a thread coming on).
Ppl who can get #pregnant can spend >35 years of reproductive life trying not to get pregnant. If typical use failure rates for #contraceptive methods like the pill or patch are ~9%, you’re almost inevitably going to have at least one failure in a lifetime.
Even if ppl have an average # of children, that’s still 30+ years of needing reliable #birthcontrol to avoid pregnancy.

How gender identity politics is endangering #WomensRights masquerading under the guise of “progressivism”- or in other words, as I said to this @notokyriarchy fatherfucker, an #MRA’s dream come true
- (thread)
I shouldn’t have to explain the realities of sex-based oppression in 2018! #Female is a biological sex. #Gender is the roles and norms that are imposed on those with female bodies to subjugate them to males for free sexual, domestic, and reproductive labor.
No matter how many genders a given culture had or recognized, somehow, the half of the group with a cock and balls (males) knew which other half of the group to forcibly impregnate (“#NonMen”, according to some). 🤔🤔🤔

We really need to talk more about #abortion as an option for women.
It's hard to say this and hard to hear it for many, but just because you discover you are pregnant doesn't mean you must carry that pregnancy to term. Your decision will last the rest of your life--and the rest of the life of any child you decide to carry to term.
#abortion
And no, I am not advocating #abortion.
I'm advocating thinking about parenthood & all it entails.
Because once you have a child, you can't just walk away from that life.
And women/girls are talked into maintaining pregnancies every day.
More discussion would change that.
