πŸš¨πŸ“NEW PAPERπŸ“πŸš¨

In a recently published paper, researchers use β€œan LCA approach to calculate the Long-Lasting #CarbonSequestration (LLCS) of #seaweed, which can be understood as the difference between #CarbonFixation & released C throughout the life cycle of seaweed.”

🧡1/9 ImageImage
Using kelp (Laminaria japonica) as an example of seaweed, the present study β€œvalidates the procedure of calculating the LLCS of seaweed throughout its whole life cycle in Ailian Bay from nursery to processing into #biochar (fertilizer) as the final product.”
2/9 Image
The results showed that β€œthe #CarbonSequestration (full life cycle) of kelp in Ailian Bay was 97.73g C /m2/year.”

🚨NEW PAPER🚨

"Utilization of biochar as a cementitious material aids in CO2 sequestration by impeding the release of C in the atm. So, a recent study reviewed the prospect of #biochar as a #cementitious material by evaluating its physical, mechanical & durability properties."🧡 ImageImage
This research suggested that "the physical properties of #biochar promote its use as an environmental control device."
A summary of the preparation and characterization of biochar is presented in a Fig. ⬇️
2/7 Image
According to the study, #pozzolan is a siliceous & aluminous material
that chemically reacts with Ca(OH)2 at room temp to form compounds having #cementitious attributes. So, some of the silica-rich biochars, like the ones derived from #RiceHusk have pozzolanic properties."

🌲"#Sequestering C in forest ecosystems is important for mitigating #ClimateChange."

✍️"Policy concern: whether forests should be left unharvested to reduce CO2 #emissions & store C, or harvested to take advantage of potential #CarbonStorage & #removal."

"#Afforestation & #reforestation are worthwhile solutions for C sequestration, but lack of hierarchical spatial-temporal maps for national scale #CarbonSequestrationRate hinders scientific implementation."

🌲Researchers assessed "the spatial-temporal #CarbonSequestrationRate (CSR) per area for #Afforestation & #Reforestation at the provincial, prefectural, and county levels in China using a forest carbon sequestration model under three climate scenarios."
2/8
🌳🌱Results showed that "the #CSR of vegetation (CSRVeg), soil (CSRSoil), and the ecosystem (CSREco) significantly varied across space and time. In China, the CSRVeg, CSRSoil, and CSREco were primarily regulated by the spatial variations in temperature and precipitation."

🚨 PAPER 🚨

A viable & novel formula for a #CarbonNegative, environmentally friendly #concrete that is nearly as strong as regular concrete has been developed recently at Washington State University.

#Concrete
#Biochar
#CarbonSequestration

*Summary* in a🧡 below:
1/6 Image
🧫 Researchers exemplify "a synergistic C-capture strategy, i.e., using #concrete washout water & #biochar together to achieve carbon-negative concrete."

"This strategy enabled the biochar to #capture 22.85 wt% air-borne CO2, which precipitated CaCO3 onto the biochar."
2/6 Image
πŸ”¬"This carbon-negative cement paste consisted of 30 wt% CO2-weathered #biochar and 70 wt% portland limestone #cement, which achieved the 7-day and 28-day compressive strengths of 22.1 MPa and 27.6 MPa, respectively," microscopic investigation revealed.

Recently, I was asked to give a seminar for @mhclg’s planners on the challenges faced by local authority planners delivering against the #climateemergency, because I work with lots of councils & I’m also Cabinet Member for Forward Planning at @CotswoldDC. So I know some stuff.
First up, I did the β€˜we’re all doomed’ bit. You know, the rollercoaster graphs steeply going up and the even steeper graphs of how emissions need to come down.
Then I mentioned about how most plans are running for about another 10-15 years and they need re-writing immediately because most of them pay diddly-squat attention to the β€˜what goes up must come down graphs’ from the β€˜we’re all doomed’ bit.
