🚨NEW PAPER🚨
"A promising solution to nullify the net embodied #GHG emissions of civil infrastructure is the use of C-negative materials for concrete manufacturing. C-neutral coal ash & agriculture/forestry by-products, like #biochar, exhibit a high CO2 uptake potential."
🧵

📝 A lately published paper aimed "to explore the viability of using #biochar as a #CarbonSink and to develop carbon-neutral #concrete with improved performance."

📉 Experimental findings suggest that "the optimal amount of biochar (1%) slightly improves hydration and mechanical properties, but the combination with mineral additives significantly enhances the performance."

🚨 PAPER 🚨

A viable & novel formula for a #CarbonNegative, environmentally friendly #concrete that is nearly as strong as regular concrete has been developed recently at Washington State University.

#Concrete
#Biochar
#CarbonSequestration

*Summary* in a🧵 below:

🧫 Researchers exemplify "a synergistic C-capture strategy, i.e., using #concrete washout water & #biochar together to achieve carbon-negative concrete."

"This strategy enabled the biochar to #capture 22.85 wt% air-borne CO2, which precipitated CaCO3 onto the biochar."

🔬"This carbon-negative cement paste consisted of 30 wt% CO2-weathered #biochar and 70 wt% portland limestone #cement, which achieved the 7-day and 28-day compressive strengths of 22.1 MPa and 27.6 MPa, respectively," microscopic investigation revealed.

We're in a Climate & Ecological Crisis, Sixth Mass Extinction, a threat to us all. Fossil fuels, though they account for over 80% of carbon emissions produced by humans, continue to be widely used. That's massively destabilising our biosphere, yet our Parliament says/does nothing Image

In honour of the victims of yesterday's terror attack on #LondonBridge, a repeat of our history of that iconic bridge:

Remember the #nurseryrhyme "London Bridge is falling down"? Here's the story of #London Bridge!

There's been a series of bridges across the #RiverThames in #London since #Roman times, 2000 years ago. They were wooden till a stone one was built between 1176 and 1209.

The 1176 #LondonBridge stood over 600 years. The heads of traitors were impaled on it - so many that there was an official Keeper of the Heads! The first head, in 1305, was that of #WilliamWallace, the #Scottish solider #MelGibson played in #Braveheart.

A new #LondonBridge was completed in 1831. It was made of #granite from #Haytor Quarry, which is now part of the #Dartmoor National Park.
Its lamps were made from the melted-down cannons of #NapoleonBonaparte's army.
