I enjoyed speaking at @OutlierConf this weekend on how I introduce #cartography to design students: by making schematic maps of hometowns (from all around India & beyond!).

If you missed it, here is a thread of some of the student maps to inspire you!

#Outlier2022 (1/9) Screenshot of title slide of talk, within the Outlier virtua
First, some context.
After spending all my childhood calling Delhi my *home*, I have sought *home* in many Indian cities: DEL ā†’ GOA ā†’ Mysuru ā†’ BLR ā†’ HYD ā†’ BOM ā†’ Pune ā†’ BLR āœØ
I perceived each city differently from others & made memory maps to show this.
2/9 Map of India with satellite imagery of of cities I once callBlurry map of Puneā€™s Magarpatta city, with only those area
When @venkatrajam invited me to introduce cartography to his students, we blended this idea of mapping personal lived experiences with schematic map (like Harry Beckā€™s London tube map, or any other metro map youā€™ve seen)

Voila: Schematic hometown mapping exercise was born!

And by "#Visual #Communications," I mean #MAPSā€”beautiful, self-crafted maps. That should have existed already, but didn't.

For fresh perspective from the innovative #cartography @RhodesCartogra1 creates, check out: thinkinginspace.info

Prepare to have your horizons expanded!
My favorite example:

@RhodesCartogra1's pathbreaking piece @NavalWarCollege won 2019 @thejointstaff #Strategic #Essay Competition's Strategic #Research Paper category.

Cogent geo-history-grounded insights for US strategy toward PRC.

I might be the last one on the population flag map bandwagon, but Iā€™m pleased with the result! Thanks to @StatCan_eng @StatCan_fra for providing nearly *half a million* polygons to select from.

#cartography #gischat #QGIS #canada @CanadianGIS @GANSorg

(Details in the thread.)
Over the last couple of weeks people have been posting their population flag maps, so I thought Iā€™d try my hand at creating one for Canada. I figured that with detailed census data, I might even be able to include a reasonable facsimile of the maple leaf.
So I went to download the boundary file of Canadaā€™s 56,589 dissemination areas, the smallest geographic area for which full census data is provided. Thatā€™s when I discovered that Statistics Canada also provides a 'dissemination block' boundary file.

A very brief history of Pompeii in plans:

OK, so the first #cartobooks I am reviewing is "Ɩsterreich ā€“ Raum und Gesellschaft" (2019) by M. Seger and Thomas Hafner (cartographer, not credited as author). The book's claim is to give a comprehensive overview of Austria from a geographic perspective on 648 pages. #mapsathome ImageImage
The book has potential to show a new way in digitally produced cartography: it doesn't even try to replicate the bespoke details and composition of analogue cartography, but leverages the advantages of digital production and GIS: sheer volume and density of (curated) information. Image
The maps in the book are uniformly rendered as bitmaps at a resolution of ā‰ˆ380 DPI, and printed with crisp square "pixel" boundaries. This gives the maps a distinctly "digital" look, letting the characteristics of the production process shine through to the surface. ImageImageImageImage

Christopher Myers kalyban of #Cartography leads a creativity workshop at @NYUADArtsCenter with young poets from the moe_uaestudents #Masterpieces program before the final performance at @NYUAbuDhabi. Translations byā€¦ instagram.com/p/B8izE_SJttO/ā€¦
The conversation focuses on cultural memory and the role of poetry in shaping monuments to memories and what weā€™re trying to hold.
What will most poets say are the most important things in the world? asks Christopher Myers. He suggests that often, poets will argue for poetry as being that thing. (Even if behind the scenes, they are talking about money).

Post performance Q&A with the cast of #Cartography and the students of @acsabudhabi Image
Q: why is a piece like this important?
A: thereā€™s so much talk about migration and the framing and statistics impact policy. We can forget that those stories represent individual people with dreams that we can relate to #heroesjourney
On a show of hands, almost the entire audience from @acsabudhabi have lived in at least 2 or more countries. Migration is a common story in the UAE

Thread: Another overview amazing #Muslim *female* achievement.

Did you know the first university in the world was built by a Muslim woman approx 1200 years ago?

This is the story of Fatima Al-Fihiri (800ā€“880 CE). #BadassWoman #twitterstorians

1/15
2. Daughter of a wealthy businessman, the family moved from Tunisia to Fez, Morocco during the rule of King Idriss II. When both her husband and father died, Fatima and her sister inherited a fortune.

They chose to spend their inheritance on building educational institutions.
3. In 859, Fatima built the Al-Qayrawan #Mosque, decorated in the Andalusian style with Kufic calligraphy (early style) engraved throughout. At 3,000 sq ft, it can fit 22,000 people.

She stacked it with Islamic works (Qurā€™ans, #Hadith collections, etc).

I'm writing up a largely sandy island for a #DnD5e campaign šŸ The island is loosely shaped like a spear head, with a mountain ridge running along what might be seen as the spears ridge / fuller šŸ—”
I love the phonetic sounds of the Arabic language for this location. I'm currently thinking the island is called internationally as Al 'Ard Ramali. Which roughly translates to The Land of the Spear. Is that too many syllables for a countries name? Does it flow? ā‰
At the very tip of the island (the pointy end), is the capital, a large trading port city that is literally & physically split in two āš“ It is known for trading in exotic items, precious metals & precious gems. Due to the desert environment that largely covers the island, food...
