I’m at the historic @WarnerTheater in DC to bear witness what @PowerUSAID invited all Americans to learn about this morning:
How Ukraine is delivering services online in a democracy at war with @USAID.
@karaswisher live now:
usaid.gov/diiaindc
19M Ukrainians using DIAA now ImageImageImage
As @karaswisher said, there has a been backpack against disruptive technologies like the Internet, smartphones, & social media.
We now worry about AI.
But all governments must harness these technologies to provide critical info & deliver services to networked publics, everywhere. Image
Today, @PowerUSAID says delivering services showed how “robust & secure digital public infrastructure” enabled Ukrainians to access services in a war while minimizing corruption.
She says @USAID supported in e-gov in Ukraine since 2016. “
The result: “Government in a smartphone.” ImageImage

We've spent the last 18 months on a particularly vexing question - is there an opportunity to build semiconductor design giants again? @Sid_1_0 @TrivediVedant and i penned our thoughts on behalf of @SequoiaIndiaSEA here :

/2 Semiconductors is the OG market that defines modern venture capital ! @sequoia founder Don Valentine was from the space, and we famously led the seed at @nvidia amongst others. a storied past, but what are the trends of the future that back the creation of new legendary cos?
/3 #OSS to the rescue ! the rise of #RISCV as a standard allowing us to back startups that build on top of this platform.

Knowing where vulnerabilities exist is only helpful when you can actually treat them. Unfortunately, a vast majority can only be corrected within an organization’s custom code.
Some organizations write custom patches, but contend with open source software package updates that break those custom patches, so there are significant forward compatibility challenges.

There’s no point in playing security whack-a-mole.

#OSS #cybersecurity
What dev, security & infrastructure teams need to know to improve test cycles:

👉 What software components are running in a workload
👉 What components actually gets used
👉 What components can be eliminated
👉 What vulnerabilities exist after unused components are eliminated

I am blessed to live in a "time of noobs" ❤
I am an impostor and a noob.

There is so much I do not know.

Why am I blessed? Because I can openly share my path of learning all that stuff.

This way I can show that it is normal to struggle while learning.

Wait...
#thinking
🧵⬇
What if we all "suffer" from impostor syndrome?

What if...
What if impostor syndrome is something that makes us human?

How to apply it to yourself?

Learn openly, whatever matters to you and your community most.

We, the friendly army of noob friends, need you.
We need you to be yourself.
We need your streams of learning & doing stuff.

You are so much better than any "code ninja".

"Yo, why are #JavaScript and its ecosystem so messy?!" 😡

Well, I am glad you asked... Let me tell you a story! 🤓

🧵👇
For starting... #JavaScript was not designed to be the language that it is today!

JS was created in 1995 by @BrendanEich for Netscape, a web browser that was trying to come up with a language to make the web more interactive
@BrendanEich #JS wasn't related w/ #Java, so why did they call it Java-Script?! Duh! 😳

Java was trendy! it was possible to build interactive sites by embedding Java apps in pages (applets). So it was mostly a #mktg move: "JS: the lightweight Java alternative" or something like that I guess

My team at @mitDCI and Boston Fed just released their technical white paper and open source code base on central bank digital currency (CBDC) design. While we still don't know if a #CBDC is the right answer, there are multiple reasons I am excited about this first🧵
We open sourced our entire code! I deeply believe that open sourcing allows for neutral, responsible research to take place while bringing transparency & diverse, global perspectives to this effort. This is also one of the first times the Fed has open sourced code! #OSS
We built two architectures for a centralized transaction processor. The first architecture (the #atomizer) processes transactions through an ordering server and can handle 170,000 tx/sec

1/ The technology behind @oceanprotocol is revolutionary.

$OCEAN enables a #NewDataEconomy with the combo of datatokens & Automated Market Maker (AMM) tech, while also revolutionizing data sharing with Compute-to-Data.

Let's dive in to understand both.
2/ The heart of the $OCEAN Market is a combo of datatokens & @balancer Automated Market Maker (AMM) technology.

This tech allows anyone to publish a dataset & have its price auto-discovered. This also allows anyone to launch their own data marketplace.

Here's how it works...
3/ There are three ways to participate in the $OCEAN Market to earn money:

✅ Selling data
✅ Staking on datasets
✅ Building & launching your own marketplace

Let's examine each one...

I think a lot of the challenges around #oss in the #dotnet community exist because both MS and OSS have enabled businesses, and to an extent individual developers, to avoid considering the full costs of their supply chain. It came from a good place, but needs fixing. 1/
The software packages and libraries you depend on are part of a supply chain for whatever you're delivering.

As in, they're something you didn't have to build yourself, and without them, you'd have to write a bunch of code that would have its own costs. 2/
You typically either build software, or buy software. But OSS has introduced an additional category: "software you can use and thankfully don't have to buy."

The problem occurs when we remove the "thankfully" and it becomes an expectation of an entire ecosystem. 3/

1/ Many companies are commercializing #opensource, but what metrics really matter? TL;DR - it’s not GitHub Stars ⭐️

We looked at all 134 #oss companies founded since 2015 across their @github metrics to assess which are the most telling, from seed to growth (other channels next) Basis Set Open Source Index -- all 134 open source companies
2/ To understand adoption, Issues❗️growth is the most important, signaling much deeper engagement than Stars ⭐️. Growth stage companies have 5x as many Issues❗️as seed stage companies.
3/ @jasoncwarner offered a fun analogy for understanding this: there are two inputs to a computer—a keyboard ⌨️ and a mouse 🖱️. He values the keyboard ⌨️ (submitting an Issue) much more than the mouse🖱️ (clicking to Star).

Just merely finishing up tutorials/webinars/courses won’t do you good in the long term. 🧵 (1/4)

Up your game by implementing some core concepts from that new knowledge by building a side project.

#tech #tutorial #tutorialhell #git #programming #webdev #oss
For that you need an idea. If you got one then go ahead! But if not then simply visit Github and look for some open source projects on the tech/language/framework you just learnt.

Benefits?

1. You bake the core concepts into your brain by actually implementing them. (2/4)
2. Your degree of awareness about the tech is more than what you had right after completing the tutorial.

3. If you are new to Github, you learn about VCS and how to contribute to an OSS.

4. Your Github contribution graph shows green. (3/4)

🐙Genesis of the OSS

The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was a wartime intelligence agency of the United States during World War II, and a predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USG/J…
The OSS was formed as an agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS)[3] to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the US Armed Forces.

Other OSS functions included the use of propaganda, subversion, & post-war planning.

ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USG/J…
The organization was developed with British assistance.

Until some months after Pearl Harbor, the bulk of OSS intelligence came from the UK.

British Security Co-ordination (BSC) trained the first OSS agents in Canada.
