Receiving much pushback for calling out #GenMilley's @thejointstaff comment on Ukraine as 'landlocked'.

Critics argue that 🇷🇺 control over the #BlackSea renders 🇺🇦 effectively landlocked.

However, even a broad interpretation of 'landlocked' is flawed. Here's a 🧵why:
Claiming UKR is landlocked militarily requires overlooking Crimea's significance to Putin. It's key in controlling access to the crucial Caspian Sea, Don-Volga Canal, and a major portion of Russia's extensive inland waterway system. #Ukraine #MilitaryPerspective
In 2021, Putin emphasized the waterway's importance, pledging billions for development to connect the Black Sea and the Baltic.

We are so proud to have had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of ultra-poor families in Kunar, Afghanistan.

In partnership with @WAWHumanRights, we were able to distribute 330 food packages to these families.
This support will make a huge impact on the 2825 individuals in these families, 89 of which are led by women and 241 of which are led by men.

In addition to these families, we were also able to provide aid to 28 widows, 39 disabled individuals, and 2 patients.
One of the beneficiaries, Turab, has struggled with thalassemia for 22 years and, along with his sister, requires monthly blood transfusions.

Despite their father currently being without work, they cannot afford the necessary medicine or a proper diet.

Today, agri stakeholders & 🇪🇺 representatives are discussing the future of food & farming #AgriOutlook

But given the last attacks on green farming reforms, the @EU_Commission’s event might recommend sticking plasters rather than look at long-term solutions for #foodsecurity

A🧵 Image
Agribusiness & right-wing political allies are using the war in Ukraine as a pretext to water down #EUFarm2Fork

They claim global #foodsecurity is under threat & we need to ↗️ food production. How? With more synthetic #pesticides & #fertilisers of course!

Scroll for the truth Image
There's no EU #foodproduction issue!

Global production of grains & wheat, leading 🇺🇦🇷🇺 food exports, is high & there's no global food supply shortage

The industry's narrative is just a smokescreen to maintain industrial agriculture 🏭

& policy-makers are buying it

#COP27 ends, our quick take:
-Hopeful: agreement on loss & damage
-Bad: we’re on track to 2.7C
-Significant: 1st agreement to include action on agriculture & #foodsecurity
-Disappointing: #agroecology & #foodsystems deleted
-Dismaying: zero #climatefinance for small-scale farmers Image
It is a significant step to see the UN #climate agreement will officially begin to target greater action on the 1/3rd of carbon emissions from industrial #agriculture and make agriculture more resilient to climate change - @ZGoita Image
We cannot ignore that the world’s small-scale farmers have been shut out & drowned out from this #COP27 says @Million_Belay of @Afsafrica.

They demanded recognition for diverse resilient farming #agroecology, and #climatefinance. But they leave with very little Image

#G20 Leaders’ communiqué is out.
In short?
The lack of results shows that the world’s most powerful countries have not lived up to their responsibility.
Here is why!
🧵
Instead of driving progress to tackle the #ClimateCrisis, leaders have barely made any changes to last year’s text. Commitments dating 2009 to end inefficient fossil fuel subsidies & provide $100B in support to developing countries remain unmet, without any deadlines.
Positive though:
A commitment to double adaptation financing, to push for a more ambitious post-2025 financing goal, and to make progress on #LossAndDamage.

Enough food is produced today to feed everyone on the planet.

You read that right.

The problem is access & availability of nutritious food, which is increasingly impeded by multiple challenges.

We need to talk about #breastfeeding like the reproductive right, child right, and public health issue that it is.

She’s not buying a tiny house. She isn’t even just feeding her child…

2/10
People have medical reasons for wanting breastfeeding that you may not have considered:

- minimizing their own risk of developing cancer or diabetes
- sensory needs
- bonding with a surrogate child, foster child, or adopted child
- trying to keep a sick child alive

🧵1/7 - THE UTTER MADNESS OF THIS

After 50yrs of 'area-based payments' under EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), there are some concerns about #FoodSecurity

The Liz Truss govt seems to be saying that the answer is to carry on with area-based payments?!

theguardian.com/environment/20…
🧵2/7
Their argument is to 'concentrate' on food production, rather than sustainability (exactly what EU CAP did)

And yet, a 2021 @DefraGovUK report concluded that biggest threats to our #FoodSecurity come from the #climate and #nature crisis

Go figure

There is no such thing as #FoodSecurity if our soils are knackered and being washed away, our pollinators are in decline, and our crops facing heat & water stress

We @WildlifeTrusts run 26 working farms, so we do know a thing or two about this..
