Arrivé au Mozambique, Freddy a fait demi-tour et regagné en puissance, "porté" par les eaux chaudes de l’océan.

Un tel mouvement, "peu courant mais pas inédit, s’explique par des changements assez radicaux de l’environnement météo, et notamment des courants atmosphériques".

À moins de 50 km de Madagascar, #Freddy a fait un nouveau demi-tour, touchant une nouvelle fois le Mozambique puis le Malawi.

Il est d'une longévité record (38 jours), mais pas forcément record en se restreignant aux jours classés "tempête tropicale" a minima.

The high intensity ensemble model forecasts for #CycloneFreddy #Freddy have always indicated the possibility of it turning and exiting before landfall.

And now the HRWF cyclone model is indicating this also.
However a very large cyclone sitting off the coast can still produce very large quantities of rain.

But the catastrophic rainfalls indicated yesterday 300-500mms of rain deep inland may not now eventuate.
The storm has experienced startling intensification over the past few hours in line with the model.
