#Nigeria #Kaduna #rape #punishment

In one state in Nigeria, convicted rapists can in future be punished with castration. The change in the law also provides that if convicted, female offenders may have their fallopian tubes removed,
according to a message tweeted by the governor of the state of Kaduna, Nasir el-Rufai. Victims younger than 14 years of age face the death penalty, and victims older than 14 years face life imprisonment. The law was passed last week.
These "drastic penalties are necessary to protect children more from serious crimes," said the governor. In the conservative state of Kaduna in northern Nigeria, some citizens have called for harsher sentences for rapists.

Professor Andrew Jonathan Nok (1962-2017) was the first scientist in the world to discover the gene responsible for an enzyme which causes sleeping sickness (Trypanosoma).

#Thread Image
The research breakthrough helped in forming the baseline for developing DNA-based vaccines against the disease which affects 60 million people and animals, mainly in rural parts of East, West and Central Africa.
He was Dean in the Faculty of Science at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before he was appointed commissioner of health and human services by Nasir El-Rufai, the #Kaduna State Governor, in July 2015. Nok was later moved to the Education Ministry following a cabinet reshuffle.

Zamfara in the last 7 days, like the week before it, reveals how the Military and the armed groups are engaged in a cat and mouse game. Human life remains short and brutish, as about 100 people were abducted and over 30 killed in the past week alone.
The state still suffers at the hands of armed men, including areas that witnessed a lull, following Police & Military deployments. The military is not also smiling with many of the people they were deployed to save. So far they have accused hundreds of complicity in the killings.
On Friday, four people were kidnapped in Jangeme along Gusau Magami road. The following day, three persons were also killed and scores abducted on the road to Sabon Birni from Anka by another band of armed men in #Zamfara.

1/ An incendiary presidential remark, the country making an EU blacklist, a political gesture posturing as a fuel price cut, and the politicisation of a mass killing fed into a week where political uncertainty reigned supreme.
2/ While there have been attempts by @OfficialAPCNg supporters to justify and defend @MBuhari’s statement, the reaction of the party’s National Leader, @AsiwajuTinubu, where he attempted to declare it a misunderstanding and an impossibility,
3/ is a take that reflects the real gravity of such a statement coming from a sitting President. Military chiefs taking a cue and insisting they will shoot alleged ballot box snatchers is disheartening.

1.THE GREAT GAME OF CHESS
As at yesterday I thought the killings in #Kaduna66 was just a coincidence to have happened an eve to the elections, but after seeing this morning news and hearing @MBuhari speech, I discovered it wasn't coincidental but orchestrated. Let me explain it.
2.WHY KADUNA?
#Kaduna is the fourth most populous state in Nigeria, I have live in #kaduna all my live, This is a common norm in #Kaduna to instigate crisis:
Day1: kill or attack a particular sect or populace
Day2: The attacked sect or populace retaliate
Day3: The crisis Day
So Day1 was executed yesterday #Kaduna66, Day 2 was to be executed today a day of election to nullify kaduna's vote which is over 12million (10 million eligible voters) due to crisis. Since Kaduna is prone to crisis it won't raise any serious concern but will tilt the outcome of

We are aware of the comments by the Governor of #Kaduna about non-interference by foreigners during a talk show on #NigeriaDecides2019 on 5/2/19. The #EU only deploys an election observation mission when it is invited to do so by the authorities of a country.
The EU has been invited to observe all of the general elections in #Nigeria since 1999. Thus this is the sixth time the EU is observing elections in Nigeria. @inecnigeria invited the EU to deploy an observation mission for @NigeriaDecides2019
EU election observation missions give commentary and analysis, and make recommendations about the electoral process. EU election observation missions are impartial, do not interfere in the electoral process, and operate according to a strict code of conduct.

.@MBuhari says he wants to take #Nigeria to the #NextLevel but while as HoS in 85, he cancelled an Education Reform Policy of Prof Babatunde Fafunwa which could have turned our academic curricular into a modern tool to raise the next generation of IT gurus & other professionals!
Same @MBuhari canceled a light rail project of Gov Lateef Jakande of Lagos in '85! A $400M loan project that would have forever transformed the face of public transportation in Lagos & served as template for other states! Say No to #NextLevel
#LetsGetNigeriaWorkingAgain
Again, @MBuhari as military General, plotted a coup with fellow coupists & disrupted a democratically elected govt of Pres Shagari & VP Ekwueme for no just reason asides contempt for democratic ideals & a penchant for dictatorship! So NO to #NextLevel #LetsGetNigeriaWorkingAgain

It must be noted that this crisis is not the first this year to engulf Kasuwan Magani, #Kaduna.

At least 12 persons were killed and 1,000 houses destroyed in a religious crisis that erupted on 26 February over the conversion of a Christian girl to Islam by her Muslim boyfriend.
65 persons were subsequently arrested and charged to court by @contactkdsg.

The history of #Kaduna is filled with crises cutting across religious, economic and tribal lines, and various governments, both military and civilian have been unable to prevent the lawlessness.
The state government’s helplessness was laid bare during the 2016 crisis between herdsmen and farmers in #Godogodo.

The payment of compensation only for cattle killed in the crisis exposed the unwillingness of @contactkdsg to confront these security threats head-on.

Reform-leaning politicians have always had serious opposition from the political elite, who wish to perpetuate the status quo. Today, Kayode Fayemi is the political barometer for governors/public leaders who wish to implement system-wide reform in the system.
#EdReform #Kaduna
Educational reform in Kaduna state in the last few days has generated the usual bickering that permeates the political divide. The conversations that my generation needs to have regarding education are many, but should be beyond the childish politicking that's pervasive so far
The dangers of politicizing our educational system is that 1) children suffer 2) our future is endangered 3) we keep losing our competitiveness as we fail to raise a new generation of thinkers with the skills & resources required to better their lives, add to nation's prosperity
