Judging from various reports, the #ukrainecounteroffensive seems to be a complete disaster, even though this is officially denied by the Western side.

But this analysis by Col. Richard Kemp of the #British military shows no expectations of success.

(1/)

news.yahoo.com/prepare-ukrain…
Col. Kemp uses cautious language, but it is easy to read between the lines. Being a retired Western Colonel, you don't expect him to come out and say openly that #Ukraine️ is going to lose. But that is exactly what he is saying.

Let me explain why the conclusion is clear.

(2/)
His main points:

1. Surprise is essential for success.

But of course, there is no surprise here. The whole world has been expecting this operation for months. There are no unexpected lines of attack like #Incheon in the #KoreanWar in 1950.

10 JUNE 1953 – BATTLE OF OUTPOST HARRY BEGINS

The Battle of Outpost Harry (10 JUN – 18 JUN 1953) was one of the last engagements of the Korean War. A small hilltop artillery observation post in the vital “Iron Triangle,” Harry was manned primarily by a company from the 3d ID. Image
The Iron Triangle was a heavily fortified zone commanding the approach to Seoul, and Harry was one of the UN's most important observation posts in the area, allowing UN forces to view and call accurate artillery strikes against the Chinese Army.

#Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC Image
The Chinese planned to use indirect fire to soften the Harry’s defenses and pave the way for its capture. Meanwhile, the Americans used a series of interlocking fields of fire, pre-arranged artillery, barbed wire, and mines to cover the perimeter of their outpost.

Any military operation that has been expected for months usually fails because the opponent has had plenty of time to plan a defence. Most successful operations are surprise operations, but not all surprise attacks work against a prepared opponent.

(1/)
Expected attacks can work if there's overwhelming force. An example is #DesertStorm.

Example of successful surprise operations: #PearlHarbor, The #Incheon Landings in the #KoreanWar, #OperationUranus at #Stalingrad in October 1942 that encircled the #German #SixthArmy.

(2/)
An example of a failed attack because there was no surprise in it was #OperationCitadel at the #BattleofKursk in June 1943. The expected line of attack was obvious to everyone because of the disposition of troops.

It stands to reason that the masses around the world began to favor #communism after #WWII — out of gratitude to the Soviets for saving them from #fascism.

Evidently this scared the hell out of the fascists in the US government intelligence agencies. 😟
So we had a #ColdWar about it — for the next half century.

These documents were not declassified until 1997.

Quite a fetching read!

- The Rolling Tigers (Korea, 1950-1953) 🧵-

We already saw how the U.S. used Vietnamese superstitions and ghost stories to try to have the upper hand during the Vietnam war (1/6) #svagaiature #Korea #KoreanWar #History #Historian #UnitedStates #USA #War Image
But that wasn’t the first time the U.S. resorted to psychological warfare and scare tactics. During the Korean War the American discovered how 1950 was the year of the Tiger in the Chinese calendar (2/6)
For these reasons American tank crews were ordered tiger faces and claws on their tanks in an effort to spread panic between the enemy lines, hoping that those superstitious among the Chinese in the Korean lines would run rather than shoot a tiger (3/6) Image

Honest question to @sendahms and other @mngop & @MinnesotaDFL legislators. If I am teaching the Civil War to 7th graders, how much time should I devote? What key events, people, concepts should I discuss? How should I assess? Remember, I have 50 minute class periods. #mnleg
I'll take it another step further, using the same parameters?
How much time, ... etc. should I devote to the #WWI? Who do I include, exclude? What outside resources can I bring in and which must I avoid? Remember these are 13 year olds and we have 173 school days.
Repeat this for the following:
#RevolutionaryWar
#Warof1812
#MexicanAmericanWar
#IndianWars
#SpanishAmericanWar
#WWI
#WWII
#Vietnam
#KoreanWar
#ColdWar
#GulfWar
#WarInAfghanistan
#WarOnTerror

What battles do we focus on? How do we build context? Outcomes?

1/ This kind of deliberately divisive and misleading headline about "woke foods" is transparent and deliberate misinformation. CTV is doing @erinotoole's propaganda work. Telling lies like this, promoting race hate and misinformation ought to be punished. Image

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un paid tribute to the millions of Chinese soldiers who stopped the U.S.-led coalition and rescued his nation from defeat in the Korean War, state media announced Thursday.
The 1950-53 conflict was the first and only time so far that Chinese and US forces have engaged in large-scale direct fighting, and China is making much of the 70th anniversary of its forces joining the war with tensions running high between Beijing and Washington.
"To mark the anniversary, the official KCNA news agency reported, Kim visited the cemetery of" martyrs "of the Chinese People's Volunteers, describing their entry into the conflict as" a historic contribution to the great victory.

After #WWII & more than 3 decades of Japanese occupation of Korea, the Korean peninsula was divided by the 38th Parallel, w/ the communist north supported by the USSR, & the democratic south supported by the U.S. & member states of the United Nations.
On 25 June 1950, the north attacked the weakly-defended city of Seoul, & captured it in 3 days w/ great casualties. It earned condemnation from the UN Security Council. The UN Resolution 83 opened the opportunity for member states to send their forces to defend South Korea. Image

Now we know Trump mocked a man's #disability because he feels "disgust for those who have suffered." As president, he told staff "not to include wounded #veterans" in an event because “Nobody wants to see that."

Trump's views of #vets: reporting from @TheAtlantic (thread)
.@FoxNews @AP & other media organizations have verified @TheAtlantic's reporting that Trump lied when he said he couldn't reach a French cemetery to honor America's war dead. In fact, "he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain."
“Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers," Trump told senior staff members," referring to America's WWI fallen. During the same 2018 trip, he referred to the "more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as 'suckers' for getting killed."

1/ The #KoreanWar killed millions of Koreans, created an enduring division, and destroyed a relatively developed economy that survived the ravages of WWII. But the war’s impact reverberated beyond the peninsula. A thread about its global consequences on its 70th anniversary.
2/ The war killed almost 40k Americans. At home, it stirred widespread anti-Communist fears and emboldened Republican critics of the Truman administration. It also led to the adoption of NSC-68, which dramatically expanded the US military and globalized containment strategy.
3/ The war heightened domestic fears in China too. Calling the conflict the “War to Resist America and Aid Korea” 抗美援朝战争, the new Communist government suppressed dissent and consolidated its authority via campaigns like the Three-anti and Five-anti Campaigns 三反五反运动.
