Bill 28: What’s at Stake?

A THREAD đŸ§”

#IStandWithCUPE #39kIsNotEnough #OntEd #OnLab #OnPoli
The Ford government introduced Bill 28, the Keeping Students in Class Act, four days BEFORE bargaining with CUPE education workers was done.
Bill 28 is pre-emptive back-to-work legislation that FORCES the government’s offer on workers and OVERRIDES their rights and freedoms under the Charter and Human Rights Code for five years.

This is NOT bargaining in good faith.

Ford is using the classic right-wing-in-gov playbook. Greenbelt attacked; tenant protections stripped; strikes criminalized. They expect us to scramble, become issue-centric, be shocked. It's early enough that voters may forget.

There is ONE strategic response that can work:
đŸ§”
We win against these tactics by UNITING at the point-of-resistance.

Right now, education workers are fighting back. So environmentalists, housing activists, others must join in. Show up with signs linking struggles.

Turn many different issues into a single political crisis.
In Canada this unity began to happen in 2012 in the student strike in Quebec. One difference is, Ford is at the beginning of this mandate. They are trying to catch up on the changes they couldn't make during COVID. And while he may not be an ideologue, those around him are.

1/ Statement from PIPSC President Jennifer Carr on Doug Ford's union busting, Charter-breaching tactics (a thread):

What Doug Ford is doing is an unprecedented attack on labour rights in Ontario.

#onpoli #39kIsNotEnough #CUPE #notwithstandingclause
2/ Make no mistake – if Doug Ford succeeds in invoking the #notwithstandingclause to avoid bargaining with @CUPEOntario, he'll do that every time he finds anyone’s constitutional rights to be inconvenient to his agenda.

#onpoli #39kIsNotEnough #CUPE #OnLab
3/ It will be used by every right-wing provincial and federal gov't to ignore their obligations to bargain fairly. These actions will erode our hard-won rights – not just the right to collective bargaining, but every right enshrined in the Charter.

Tales from a Broken System: An @ETFOPeel member who works in Brampton & provides direct Special Education support to their school, to students, & families diligently tracked the no. of mins they were unable to
 // 1/x #ETFO #OntEd #OnLab @PeopleforEd @ETFOEducators #OnPoli

provide that support over the course of the school year b/c of staffing shortages. On multiple days & occasions over the course of the year, they were directed to collapse their support program so that they could instead take over a class & supervise those students
 // 2/x

b/c the school wasn’t able to secure an Occasional Teacher (i.e. a ‘Supply Teacher’) on that day to cover an absence. This means that, on those days, several students & staff were denied *direct support* that they need, deserve, & are entitled to b/c this system

Dr. Loh was @CBCIsmaila’s guest & spoke, among other things, about the “Herculean task facing teachers” (&, presumably, *all* #onted workers).

Re: convos w school boards about pivoting to remote learning: “They continue. Looking at data, safety precautions. Kids benefit from in-person. Longer we can keep them there, longer we’ll see overall improvements to their well-being. At this time, no decisions have been taken.”
@CBCIsmaila: “Do you think classes should go online?”

LL: “The data is clear. Out of almost 600 Peel schools, outbreaks have only been declared in just under 20 of them. Of those, we usually see a median of 2 to 3 cases.”

Now that we *know*, w certainty, that the plan is for an #UnsafeSeptember, I’m going to say it – bc I believe that I have a responsibility to:

EXCLUSIVE: This migrant worker spoke up about a massive COVID-19 outbreak that killed his bunk mate. Then he was fired and told he would be deported to Mexico, according to legal docs.

thestar.com/business/2020/

Gabriel Flores Flores spoke to the @TorontoStar in June for an investigation into his employer, Scotlynn Growers, that showed a long history of complaints at the farm.

Later in June, a new complaint to the labour board says he was accused of speaking to the press and terminated.
The original investigation is here. At the time, Scotlynn President Scott Biddle told me in an interview (that took place after the alleged firing) that a worker would never be sent home for "voicing their opinion". #onlab #canpoli

NDP MPP @john_vanthof: CBC reports email addresses linked to certain UCP domain names were fraudulently attached to UCP memberships and used to cast ballots in the party's leadership race. Among the domains: deanfrench.ca. Has Ford talked to Dean French about this?
Vanthof: Former UCP member has written the RCMP alleging the Kenney leadership campaign used fraudulent emails to intercept personal ID numbers needed to cast a ballot in the leadership race. Some of those addresses were linked to a site bearing the name of Ford's Chief of Staff.
Vanthof: This concerns the ethical standards Ford sets for himself and staff in his office. Has Ford instructed his Chief of Staff to turn all relevant information over to the RCMP officers who have been asked to investigate?
(Ford does not answer)
