A hypothesis on why #CSforAll remains so elusive in American K12 education (a thread):

“Career pathways” isn’t cutting it as rationale for broadening equitable participation in Comp Sci education across K12.

We need to reframe the need.

The impact of computing innovations on society, economy, and culture - particularly in just the past 25 years - is undeniably immense.

Not one school, district, state, tribal, territorial, or federal education administrator or policymaker will deny this.

2/
But, even as educational leaders can see as clearly as #remotelearning just how pervasively computing innovations now-constantly alter our day-day lives..

..we’re afraid, systemwide, to take on the question of whether to allow K12 kids to study that which impacts them, too. 3/

School reopening advocates and apologists invariably invoke the impact of #remotelearning on children's mental health. What they do not talk or write about is the shattering impact on a young person of a parent's sudden death due to #COVID19. 1/
"The Burden of Bereavement," published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in September 2018 - before the pandemic - examined the long-term effect of parental death. "The loss of a parent," it wrote, "is one of the most stressful events that a child can experience." 2/
The study established that the loss of a parent is for children an emotionally catastrophic event with long-term consequences. Over a 7 year period, bereaved children suffered "depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and functional impairment." 3/

I'm going to try to do one more thread today on masking vs vaccination as primary tool against delta and then I am planning to let it go (for the weekend at least.) I know almost no one agrees with me and almost no one wants to hear it.
Despite the fact that our government and media are pretending the pandemic is over currently there are more Americans hospitalized for Covid then EVER. EVEN IF this policy focus on vaccination resulted in people rushing to get vaccines it would take at least 5 weeks for effect.
In contrast to vaccines, lockdowns and mask mandates have immediate effect. We SHOULD have a #NationalLockdown but at the very least schools should be closed and we should have a #NationalMaskMandate. The government should provide free grade 95 masks and fine noncompliance.

I've been thinking a lot this week about how hard it is on teachers to teach online knowing there is an audience off-screen. Not the kids, but the parents and carers who are listening in to you while you re-learn and re-write your craft (i.e. teach, but on screen). THREAD Image
I think of the introverts,
the camera-shy,
the grads doing it for the 1st time,
the teachers who learning the tech for the first time 'on stage',
the confident and experienced teachers who all still doubt themselves, no matter how well they are doing...
Teaching is delicate and nuanced. The gliding duck (or maybe drowning duck) being seen on screen likely doesn't show the paddling happening under water...
We are trying to balance
-student wellbeing
-student learning
-student connectedness
-student safety and privacy...

I thought people might appreciate a bit of an insight into how things are for teachers during lockdown. Please note this is just my personal experience, and is not a whinge or a plea for sympathy. I am fine, but it's hard, and all kinds of things are out of our control.
My load this year is 3 days English, 2 days library. At the start of lockdown, I had just one class (Year 8) that I didn't share at least one period with other teachers. My HT and I share a Year 9 and a Year 10 class, and I had one or two periods of other people's Year 8 classes.
Once lockdown started, this is how responsibility for posting work went: obviously, I'm 100% responsible for my own Year 8 class, and I took on the main responsibility for another Year 8 class where the split was 4/3 and the other teacher has young kids at home.

Laura Avis learned about an idea for virtual bookshelves at a professional development and connected that new knowledge to her students’ need for easier access to electronic reading resources during the pandemic and #remotelearning. 2/13
For the Digital eBook Library project, Laura used @myKYVL eBooks to create virtual Google slide bookshelves of different genres and topics. The library slides were shared with students and teachers to encourage self-selected reading. 3/13

And there it is. I will not expect children to go back to school. If they do, I will be surprised... Parents did this. Teachers enforced it. Unions demanded it. Shame on everyone that reinforced the fear narrative.

How has the lack of face-to-face interaction during online learning affected the mental health of students? @UoWMediaFilm #UoWMediaCon2021 #Zoomaversity #ZoomFatigue #MentalHealthMatters #OnlineUniversity #Covid #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealth #RemoteLearning (1/10) The title "How has the...
@UoWMediaFilm Together over the last year, we’ve found that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction as we had to turn to virtual interaction instead, so we were interested in the effect this has had on student mental health. #UoWMediaCon2021 #Zoomaversity (2/10)
To first investigate if there has been an effect, we sent a survey to our peers. 42.9% of students stated their mental health has been impacted by online learning “a little”, 38.1% choose “majorly” and 0% said there had been no change at all. #UoWMediaCon2021 #Zoomaversity (3/10)

Wondering if any parents out there have negotiated 504 or IEP #remotelearning accommodations for a teen with #ADHD. Trying to figure out what will work + what is reasonable when school is fully virtual.

@ErynnBrook I'm wondering if you or any of your followers might have ideas?
FWIW, I also have #ADHD (my son's dx at age 8 was the aha moment that led me down the path to my own dx), so I have a deep understanding of his challenges + needs, but am out of my depth in trying to provide all the supports + structure to help. Was managing it okay pre-pandemic.
Son hasn't had a 504 or IEP since 5th grade - did well in middle school w/o accommodations. Began doing less well in 9th grade after being hit by a car while walking home from school (was physically okay but had significant mental + emotional trauma).

Three really useful Google Chrome extensions for Google Classroom.
1️⃣

Mote: voice notes and feedback.

This is an efficient tool for recording and posting verbal feedback. Mote is fully integrated into Google Docs, Slides, Sheets and Google Classroom. This makes it incredibly accessible and easy to use.
The mote icon (purple) appears in the 'private comments' box when you view submissions in GC. You simply click on the icon and record. With voice recording one click away, it is easy and quick to use. You only get 30 seconds but this encourages succinct, precise feedback.

Given that so many are teaching synchronously right now, I thought I might share the tips and tricks that have been shared with me through my #remotelearning journey this year (disclaimer: I’m not an expert on virtual teaching by any means, just #teachershelpingteachers) 👩🏼‍💻
Add the “Google Meet Attendance” Chrome extension by allan.caughey - this will save you SO.MUCH.TIME when trying to keep track of who is logging in to class in the mornings/afternoons
Add the “Google Meet Breakout Rooms” Chrome extension by @hudektech - this is a GREAT way of allowing students to collaborate in the same way they might face-to-face

NO ONE is accusing parents of being selfish!
BUT the situation in the UK is DESPERATELY SERIOUS!
The more kids in school & nurseries, the more healthcare workers will get ill or need to isolate due to #Covid impacting on #NHS staff levels. 1/5
AND the more vulnerable kids take #COVID19 home to families who’re already at increased risk of serious #Covid ,will result in higher demand for Critical Care/ITU beds & stop other care.
#Dfe need to urgently change the access for parents from “key” to “ESSENTIAL” workers. 2/
No one is suggesting it is easy. I can see how hard it must be to supervise #remotelearning & work from home.
But IF you can manage your kids at home even for a couple of weeks it would make a big difference to this crisis, which is rapidly becoming a catastrophe!
Really! 3/

I'm on a school's #RemoteLearning info meeting & a student asks "A web cam is expensive. My computer doesn't have one. How do I attend class w/ a camera?" @ChiPubSchools
Next question is about Study Hall- will you take attendance? Answer is yes. #RemoteLearning
In personal news... one of our computers has a non functioning mic & current headphones cause wobbly audio when my child speaks. We can get diff headphones but what about all those other kids who can't? (Yes, I am privileged to be able to have a computer for my child mic or no.)

Corruptus incredibils. We need to be #remote we need flexibility and we need options for outdoor learning. But before all that delay the opening and hit pause !
Cancel all state tests. Grant waivers for this year again. This is not business as usual. #red4ednyc #healthjustice #nycschoolsdeserve
No each school wont be able to do the same thing. We have been screaming at the top of our lungs about inequities for decades already. But outdoor learning, field trips, service projects all should be on the table in @NYCSchools

1) IHE colleagues with #remotelearning students-it's imp to reach out to students in states affected (or who will be) by #CaliforniaWildfires #TropicalStormLaura #HurricaneMarco. It may not be something you're accustomed to doing unless you live in the same area/are affected too.
2) Having supported #onlinestudents through many natural & human made disasters, we've found it helps to reach out to students *proactively* to let them know we care & to share our contact info, encourage them to reach out if we can be of any help, & to ask them to check in...
3) to let us know how they're doing (or ask a family member or friend contact us if they cannot). We email them first & follow up w. a call if we don't hear back. We also ask them to provide alternate contact info.

@NYCMayor is saying some seriously dangerous nonsense. “... people think that if you raise enough questions & doubts, folks will run away and hide. That’s not what I do.... We just don’t surrender.” It is not "surrendering" if you listen to stakeholders' VERY VALID questions.
the fact the @BilldeBlasio thinks that keeping New Yorkers safe is "running away and hiding" and is "surrendering"...???? Where is the logic? We are asking you to consider the reality that WE COULD DIE if you send us back.
Plus: it's not like the city has some GRAND PLAN for the Fall semester. There are HUNDREDS of crucial, and simple!, questions that have gone unanswered with regard to this reopening. #wewontdieforDOE #OnlyWhenItsSafe
