In this thread, we will have fun talking about how a ketogenic diet makes for a healthy brain. And sharing just a small portion of the research that proves I am not making this up! Are you ready? 🧠🧵(1/14)
The ketogenic diet (KD) has been linked to significant neuroprotective effects, with Beta-hydroxybutyrate acid (BHBA) playing a key role in preventing neurodegenerative disorders. I kid you not. Ketogenic diets are no joke when it comes to having a kick-ass brain! (2/14)
Microglial cells play a crucial role in neurodegenerative disorders, but BHBA from the ketogenic diet can help. It promotes an anti-inflammatory microglial phenotype, reduces migration, and modulates cytokine levels. The implications for neuroprotection are off the charts! (3/14)

Today we are going to talk about white matter disease and what it means for the brain. Settle in for a thread. 🧵(1/27)
The brain is mostly made up of gray matter and white matter. The gray matter covers the outside of our brain, which is called the cortex, meaning the bark. White matter is mostly on the inside. (2/27)
White matter consists of nerve fibers that connect different parts of the brain, and it's covered in a myelin sheath. This protective sheath appears white because it's made up exclusively of fat, along with a few other types of molecules. (3/27)

Mitochondria and ketone bodies play important roles in the regulation of redox potential, and together they can help heal your brain. 🧵(1/12)
Mitochondria are the primary site of energy production within cells, and they play a crucial role in the regulation of redox balance. (2/12)
During energy production, electrons are transferred from electron donors to electron acceptors and can lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). (3/12)

Some of you are under the mistaken understanding that the mechanism of improvement in the ketogenic diet is just simply improved nutrient intake and eating a whole foods diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. (1/7)
And I need you to understand this is not the case. Yes, improved nutrition is good for the brain. But that alone does not stop seizures, and it does not improve metabolism in the brain to the level needed to treat mental illness. (2/7)
If you have been doing "all the right things" regarding nutrition with little improvement in mood and cognitive symptoms, you may want to consider a ketogenic diet. It is a powerful metabolic therapy for the brain. (3/7)

Microcytic anemias, which affect all cell lines, can have adverse effects on brain and nervous system health. Iron deficiency #anemia, the most common type of microcytic anemia, can cause #cognitive impairment. 🧵(1/18)
Iron is crucial for #brain function, and its #deficiency can reduce #oxygen delivery to the brain, affecting #cognitive processes like #attention, #memory, and learning. (2/18)
#B12 deficiency, another common cause of microcytic anemia, can also damage the nervous system. (3/18)

Many people with mental health conditions rely on medications to manage their symptoms, but these medications often come with metabolic side effects like weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and sexual side effects. (1/8)
Many people complain of feeling less "bad" but also emotionally flat. As someone who does couples therapy, I can tell you these side effects come into the session with the couple.
There are costs to these side effects. (2/8)
In addition to the financial cost of medications, these side effects can come at a high quality-of-life cost, which is why many people don't stay on them, even when they're helpful. (3/8)

Maybe we could just make sure everyone gets their Vitamin D level checked every time they get sent for labs? (1/6)
Or better yet, maybe you, as the patient, can self-advocate and insist it is done. Every three months is a good pace, as it can fluctuate mightily throughout a calendar year! But don't get hung up on a schedule of testing. Just get it done! (2/6)
"In adults with prediabetes, vitamin D was effective at decreasing risk for diabetes." (3/6)

The struggling brain is already trying to shift to ketones for fuel. (1/4)
"The bioenergetic system of the brain is compromised early in the progression of AD and is evident during the prodromal (preclinical) stage of the disease. (2/4)
Glucose hypometabolism and a compensatory shift to an alternative fuel substrate, ketone bodies, have been established as a metabolic phenotype characteristic of the AD brain in both clinical and preclinical studies." (3/4) doi.org/10.1016/j.ebio…

Talking to your doctor about implementing a #ketogenicdiet to treat your mental illness or neurological disorder? Are they under the impression #ketosis is a medical emergency?
You're going to have to educate them! #neurotwitter #mentalillness #brainhealthmatters
The confusion arises as #Physicians are taught about #Ketoacidosis, a severe condition in people with Type 1 Diabetes or alcoholism. The determining factors for Ketoacidosis are either a lack of insulin with high blood sugar & ketone levels above 5mmol/L or severe malnutrition.
But being in Nutritional #Ketosis is normal & healthy, and should not be equated with Ketoacidosis. It's important to educate ourselves & our #physicians about the difference between these two concepts.

Twitter Thread Alert! 🧵It's time for a mini-review of the literature on the use of #ketogenic diets and #Autism. Now some of you identify as neurodivergent and are not interested in modifying these differences. #neurotwitter 1/29
You may also not want to participate in a discussion that sees these differences as pathology. If that is the case, this is not the thread for you. I am not interested in hosting that philosophical discussion in this thread. 2/29 #boundaries
This thread is for people who are experiencing distress around what they experience as symptoms, and they deserve to know all the ways they can feel better. And I am going to tell them. So with that caveat, let's begin.👇3/29

The Unique Regulation of Glucose and Ketosis in the Brain 🧵(1/4)
Regulatory controls are tighter in the brain than in the periphery. Glucose and glycogen regulation happens in the glia in the brain. #glia (2/4)
Ketosis can take 24-36 hours to achieve in the periphery, but the brain goes into ketosis every night. Glial glycogen stores are depleted within 6-8 hours. #ketones (3/4)

A well-formulated ketogenic diet for brain health excludes grains. Let me tell you why. (1/7) #ketogenic
The effect of glutens aside, you want the full benefit of your nutrient-rich diet. You don't want to eat things that bind to the minerals you eat and make them inaccessible for your use. Like, you can do that, but what's the point? (2/7) #nutrition
Your brain needs minerals for optimal functioning. It's all about the mitochondria. And they need those minerals. Check out these key points from this important paper 👇(3/7)
