At kung gusto niyong magbasa, nagsulat ako equally tungkol sa panahon ni Aquino at ni Duterte with the same criticality and vigor. — radikalchick.com (nagsusulat ako diyan since 2008).

The #ASEAN disunity over AUKUS

The #ASEAN sees #aukus pact increases geopolitical risks in the region, as #aukus is aimed at countering rising Chinese belligerence.
The rise of partnerships in the region, which are not ASEAN-centric causes them concern.

orfonline.org/expert-speak/t…
2/ How have various #ASEAN countries reacted to #aukus ?

They've not reacted in unison. Each member expressed its own views. The divergence in opinion was quite apparent.
Brunei did not speak about it.
Indonesia expressed caution with AUKUS.
Malaysia appears astonished. Image
3/ #Vietnam is more open to #aukus “All countries strive for the same goal of peace, stability, cooperation, and development” & nuclear power can be harnessed for development.

The #Philippines is more welcoming of the #aukus though President #Duterte sounded contradictory. Image

Yakın tarihin en sıra dışı devlet başkanı: Duterte

Papa'ya da Obama'ya da "o... çocuğu" diyebilen, Avrupa ülkelerine hakaretlerde bulunan #Filipinler Devlet Başkanı Rodrigo Duterte, yakın tarihte gördüğüm ve kafamda sınıflandıramadığım tek devlet başkanı. Image
Uyuşturucu kartellerine karşı mücadele etmeyi başkanlığının en önemli icraatleri arasına koydu, satıcılara yönelik ölüm talimatları verdi, bölge ülkelerinin aksine ABD’den para istedi.
2016’da başkan olduktan sonra silahlı gruplarla masaya oturan, silahlı mücadeleyi bırakmayan komünist NPA’ya yönelik işkencelerin bile önüne açan Duterte, ülkesinde yaşayan yaklaşık %10’luk #Müslüman nüfus için Ramazan Bayramı’nı resmi tatil ilan etti.

President #Duterte decision on VFA hinges on Filipinos’ welfare

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will decide on the fate of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the national interest and welfare of #Filipinos in mind.
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go said whatever decision the President will come up with should be respected.

The VFA with the United States is a deal to allow the presence of military forces in the #Philippines for military exercises with local troops and humanitarian missions.
An important clause states that US military courts will have jurisdiction over crimes committed by its members as long as they are part of official duties.

Go said President #Duterte, as chief architect of foreign policy, has the prerogative to make decisions for the country.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador #Panelo insisted that those criticizing President Rodrigo Roa #Duterte’s demand for the United States (US) to pay the #Philippines for hosting American troops should allow the chief executive to “strategize” since it was part of his job.
While acknowledging critics’ right to free speech, Panelo said their sentiments would give the US the impression that there is disunity among Filipinos.

Panelo reiterated that President #Duterte is the chief architect of foreign policy as mandated by the #Constitution
and that President #Duterte can enter into treaties and to make these treaties effective before it goes to Congress for its concurrence.

In the Philippines, where @Facebook is popular, it has enabled a lot of people to connect with families and friends and meet new ones, do their business and express political opinions usually reserved to mainstream media.
The problem really comes from @Facebook PH fact-checkers who want to suppress political views they disagree with. Worse, they had kicked out the #HandsOffOurChildren page, by parents who want to recover their kids from the CPP-NPA, and pro- @TeamAFP pages

I've posted screencaps, but let me break down the last part of that speech, where #Duterte revealed he was angry and pikon about OUR frontliners going public with their call for a #TimeOut and #ECQ because of the current Covid-19 response IS NOT WORKING. A thread.
"You did not need to go into raising your hands, revolution revolution. If you think this can be solved by revolution, go ahead, so I will be calling all people who love their country to come forward to work for me, 'yung mga healthworkers to come to help." #DefendFrontliners
"But there is no need for 1,000 of you guys, telling us what to do, publicly. You could've just written us a letter. You know it's the resources. And pera, may gusto kayong bilhin ko, ang problema, ang bulsa ko butas na yung isa. Dahil we have suffered economically."

Yesterday commemorated Jose Rizal’s vision for #PhilippineSovereignty. I am asking all our followers to RT these messages. Rizal was a Patriot executed by Spain for speaking out for Filipino freedom. He was a European educated writer, thinker & leader of the Revolution.
#Rizal identified with the people & sought for the identity of the original Philippine people. His vision helped forge a nation. But U.N., U.S. & NGOs still treat Philippines like a colony.
It is like the #OpiumWars in China. British & other Europeans forced China to grow Opium & allow its people to consume it. Addiction & corruption destroy national character. Chinese rose up; killed for resisting enslavement to opiates. Now Western agencies doing it again!

Yale history prof @TimothyDSnyder outlined 20 lessons from the 20th Century on preventing tyranny from overcoming democracy. His book is a must-read for #TheResistance: amazon.com/Tyranny-Twenty… (Thread)
1/ Do not obey in advance. Do not acquiesce or conform to the new regime, offering to comply before compliance is required by law. Hitler's party consolidated power b/c too many citizens offered anticipatory obedience.
2/ Defend Institutions. Trump has aggressively sought to undermine all independent institution that opposes his admin, including the free press, the judiciary, DOJ, FBI, & #Mueller. Choose an institution you cherish and take its side.

#THREAD: I am at the #COMMA2017 content summit conference. I'll be discussing #ASEAN integration, the digital media landscape and the #millennial agenda.

What is the future of news and media in ASEAN?

Stay tuned!
#CeritalahASEAN started with Ceritalah 25 years ago in the early 90s - during the height of print media. In those days, The Economist, The Straits Times, The New York Times, were really flourishing. Much of the 80s and 90s, I met with and talked to editors across the world.
Those publications were really dynamic and powerful.

But we've seen those publications come down. WSJ stopped printing in Asia. Jakarta Globe stopped printing in 2015. KiniBiz, Volume in Thailand also stopped printing....

What has come up to replace those institutions?
