Hello Tweeple! Super chuffed to have this #paper just out in @naturesustainab ! It took 2 years, 15 institutions and 18 authors to put this together. Here's a summary 👇🧵 (0/9)
(1/9) The problem: #landscape-scale #conservation in a crowded country like #India

#WBTC2 #Con2 (1/5)
We've lost >30% of #wetlands worldwide, ecosystems that provide us essential #ecosystemservices. What do we know about the relation between this #threatenedhabitat and 🦇? Detecting gaps in our current knowledge will help upcoming needs for #batconservation.
#WBTC2 #Con2 (2/5)
I reviewed 116 scientific publications to reveal #knowledgegaps. Bat-wetlands studies have barely increase since 1900, mainly focused on species inventory and habitat use, leaving key topics like #pollution #habitatfragmentation #batmigration poorly studied
#WBTC2 #Con2 (3/5)
Mostly of the studies have been carried out on #developedcountries leaving some large areas of wetlands poorly explored. In order to help #landmanagers and #policymakers we provide a new method to identify high priorities areas of study: Bat Knowledge Index

PART 1: REDEVELOPMENT AND INDUSTRIALISATION OF #GREATNICOBAR ISLAND
- The project involves construction of an #airport, #port, & a transportation system
- #Galathea WLS was denotified for the project

I’m so bloody tired of freshwater ecosystems being overlooked 😤. So here’s a thread about why you and everyone else should give a shit #freshwaterneedslovetoo #tellyourgrandmothertoo🏞️(1/n)
#Freshwater makes up less than 2.5% of the world’s water (much is inaccessible, trapped in glaciers) yet 140000 species incl. 55% (!!) of all #fish species 🐟depend on it to survive (2/n)

Source: USGS
The world (people, organizations etc.) focuses much more on marine and terrestrial ecosystems, often literally excluding #freshwater at all. Ex: this figure by IUCN. Where the fuck are freshwater species? #freshwaterneedslovetoo (3/n)

We have been seeing the devastating news of the last known female #Rafetus swinhoei’s death. While we talk of captive breeding and building assurance colonies, I have a few thoughts. A thread. Disclaimer: This thread is about South Asia and mostly India. #Turtles #Tortoises
South Asian #turtles face extreme threats to their survival because of habitat loss, poaching and uncontrolled hunting. While assurance colonies are important to protect critically endangered species, how much attention are we paying to find out what is their natural history...
What is the ecology of these threatened species? What are we doing to ensure their survival in the wild?
