Ministers from the host of #MIPAA20Rome, Italy, are now speaking on the challenges but also the opportunities of population ageing.

We are on average living longer than ever before. The @UNDecadeAgeing is our opportunity to live these extra years with health & well-being.
@dienekeita (@UNFPA) provides a strong message: we must do for older people now what we want for ourselves when we are older.

#MIPAA, #MIPAA20Rome, and the @UNDecadeAgeing all show there is political will to improve the lives of older people. That will must be backed by action.

#LongCovid - a 🧵

I survived #COVID19, sure.

Over a year ago, I had a fever of almost 41C for a week, extreme fatigue, & severe myalgias. I was bedridden for that week. I lost my sense of smell & taste for a couple weeks as well.

I recovered uneventfully - or so I thought.
Over the next few months, I noticed I was getting more and more tired, to the point I worried about my function, and was referred to the #COVID19AB pulmonary clinic.

All tests were normal - lung function, walking, oxygen sats, bloodwork, chest X-ray.

I continued to get worse.
I became a surrogate for a friend and colleague, and was pregnant in November 2020 - my symptoms either got better due to the immune changes in pregnancy, or I became unaware due to the extreme stressor of working #LongTermCare #COVID19AB outbreaks every day for months.

This week, during a virtual round table with health care experts, Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau reaffirmed his commitment to establishing national standards for #LongTermCare.

When the #COVID19 pandemic is over, the women and men in long-term care will remain in these facilities.

Our government recognizes the importance of working together with provinces and territories to significantly elevate the existing standards of care across the country. (3/5)

2. Long-term care homes have been hit disproportionately hard by the pandemic, suffering widespread outbreaks and far too many deaths. This has devastated residents, families, and care providers

Shortstaffed. Crowded. Crumbling infrastructure. Four residents to a room.

There needs to be an inquiry into Extendicare Parkside long-term care home. Now.

Almost every single resident and staff member at Parkside has tested positive for #COVID19SK. Many have died. (1/7)

Workers, residents, and family members have been pointing out the failure of the Sask. Party government to address urgent needs and dangerous conditions for a long time. (2/7)
The issues at Parkside have been → years ← in the making.

Let’s look at the government’s own CEO Tour Reports of this facility, starting back in 2013. (3/7)

We are now bearing the consequences from multiple failures by our health leadership, @adriandix, @jjhorgan, @VCHhealthcare, @PHSAofBC . #bcpoli #bc #COVID19BC
The first being the choice of managing #COVID19 for hospital capacity instead of aiming for #COVIDzero.
Then within the management regime several others failures. First: insufficient testing. Frequent testing at #LongTermCare, and #hospitals would have saved many lives. A large scale deployment of neighbourhood testing centres for anyone who wants it woudl have curbed transmission.
