I think students need to make more noise about how bad many video lectures (recorded lectures) are. Also, slides. If slides are good, is it worth skipping the video? If the video is bad, do the slides compensate? #education #onlineLearning #instructionalDesign
Anyone who's taken an online course is likely to know why I'm bringing this up — unless you were very, very lucky. We see so many online degrees nowadays. When the courses are asynchronous, that means there will be video lectures.
When the course is 100% online, these video lectures are meant to be a core part of your learning. But are they? Disclaimer: I've made a lot of videos of my own lectures. I hope they are good. I really don't know.

Some reflections on the situation at FutureLearn as it's unfolded this week and thinking ahead - a thread…⬇️ 1/

Indicators haven’t been good for a long time - sadly and the recent news is the culmination of a business that consistently hasn’t been profitable. 2/
They have faced the same challenge of other MOOC platforms in moving from an enterprise initially focussed on free open courses into something that could be financial sustainable and profitable. 3/

Notable news in the world of online education in higher ed - Open University has announced its intention to find a buyer for its 50% stake in FutureLearn #onlinelearning #edtech #highered 1/
The other 50% is owned by SEEK - it will be interesting to observe whether a new investor will be forthcoming and whether in the short to medium term whether this will represent an upturn or a further downturn in fortunes. 2/

Should we be worried about FutureLearn?
#onlinelearning #highered

A thread 🧵⬇️
A few weeks back I wrote about MOOC platforms and about their potential future relationship with UK universities. It felt like an opportune time to do so 10 years on from the huge MOOC buzz of 2012. 1/
I spent some time looking at three of major MOOC platforms Coursera, edX and FutureLearn, because it’s hard to divorce the MOOC as an educational model from the platforms that have sprung up around them. 2/

Interesting release from 2U on current financial performance but also interestingly on future direction which appears to be coalescing under the edX brand and further developing that as marketplace platform. Job losses also look likely #onlinelearning investor.2u.com/news-and-event…
More on 2Us future direction - the new revenue share model is broken down with a minimum 35% that increases depending on taking marketing, support and content development services - with all these it rises to 60%. Fairly transparent proposition... 2u.com/latest/2u-unve…
Would be very interested to see what marketing actually looks like in the core bundle and how much that is really banking on the edX brand and as an existing marketplace destination.

great #OnlineLearning isn't necessarily media-rich. it's connection-rich.

the LEAST engaging online courses I've taken have been media-rich and connection-poor.
I see a lot of #HigherEd LD postings that seem to misunderstand this. That worries me.

pedagogy before tech
people before pedagogy

Starting an online course as a #blogger or instructor? See this.

In the last 5 years, and most especially last year 2020, we saw a rapt growth of online teaching which has both benefited the students, course creators, and of course the software/platforms used in creating these
online training courses.

Take for instance, based on the Online Learning Growth Statistics, Chart, and Rate by SaaSprout, it was disclosed that “One-third of the learners that ever registered on a MOOC platform joined in 2020 which majorly was due to the pandemic.
MOOC providers, in particular, benefited immensely by attracting many learners with their free online courses from top universities”.

Going on, we also saw that “Based on findings from a pair of Pew Research Center surveys conducted in spring 2011, nearly two-thirds of college

A return to in-person learning in Canadian universities this fall, without a #VaccineMandate and other mitigation measures, is rife with complications. And many questions. A thread 🧵1/
#HigherEd #Ontario #OntEd #VaccinesWork
The largest class I am teaching in-person this fall has 120 students. If we estimate that 70% will be fully vaccinated by this fall, that means this class will have 84 vaccinated students, 36 unvaccinated students, and 1 vaccinated prof spending 3-hrs together every week.
Current estimates suggest that two doses of an mRNA vaccine are ~88% effective against the #DeltaVariant. So if a student brings Delta to class, we are looking at an outbreak with many infections - mostly in the unvaccinated students - but also in ~10 fully vaccinated students.

I’ve compiled 6 tips for the move online based on @AccessTCD & @SchoolofEdTCD research. During #schoolclosures last year we surveyed 1000+ students and 700+ teachers about their experience of #onlinelearning. Although it's difficult to be back here, we have learned so much. (1/N)
1. Prioritise student & staff wellbeing. Connection before content. Everyone is dealing with different circumstances at home often unbeknownst to others. Check-in with students and colleagues. (2/N)
2. A whole-school approach is needed when moving teaching and learning online. Our research suggests that schools who used a whole school approach had higher engagement from students and higher collaboration among teachers. (3/N)

I went to bed last night really angry and frustrated that people are still forcing learners to be on camera...
At this point I wonder if the holdouts are people we can get through to, who are just in need of more support and information about the science of teaching and learning, or if they are committed to their own ignorance? Is it worth continuing the conversation?
Anyway, sometimes you continue the conversation not because you believe it will change someone's mind, but because of what will happen to you if you don't keep speaking your mind, I guess.

10 Business ideas to generate #income.

Looking to escape your day job? Or just looking to increase your disposable income with a side hustle.

Check out my 10 favorite #moneyideas that could let you fire your boss.

(Thread) 👇
1. Re-selling goods

Look on local #Facebook groups for items that you could add a markup on and re-sell. Most people selling are looking for extra cash, so you could even negotiate a cheaper price. You don't even need to buy the product before you advertise to sell it.
2. Tutoring
Technology has fast tracked our ability to connect. Target a specific niche. You could teach English online, science, math, or even music. I personally use this to increase my income each month. There is a global audience wanting to learn. #onlinelearning

I've been running sessions for educators adjusting to online teaching and many are facing challenges with live, synchronous teaching...here's some small ways to enhance things...1/ #onlinelearning #onlineteaching
There are so many distractions when teaching via videoconferencing, including the video of yourself. We have a tendency to keep looking at ourselves, so hide this to remove an unnecessary distraction. 2/
Eye contact is an important aspect of communication, but we usually look everywhere but our webcam. Looking into the webcam is hard but good to master - adding post-it notes with key points adjacent to it can help. 3/

#EdTech | From #BYJU’S to #Unacademy – competition in India’s fast-rising online education sector - by @sanchdash

businessinsider.in/business/start…
The opportunity in Indian #EdTech is huge and the top edtech startups are all vying for the same pie. In 2020 alone, India’s edtech startups have raised over $1.5 billion which is just as much as the startups had raised in the past five years put together.

@unacademy
According to a Redseer report, India’s #EdTech startups had raised $1.6 billion between 2014-2019. Here's a look at the valuations of India's fast-rising #onlinelearning sector.

I'm going to try to put something more extensive together this week, but in the meantime, this might be helpful to newly online educators who are struggling with the question of how to engage students online: emerald.com/insight/conten…

#HigherEd
#OnlineLearning
Many of us think of online engagement in these three buckets:
1. Teacher-student
2. Student-student
3. Student-content

Found this article calling that the "Trifecta of Student Engagement."
Instead of the current obsession with synch vs. asych, your time might be better spent here. Look through your course plans and identify which bucket your activities/assignments/content fall under. Do you have a balance of the three?

I just read an article in #HigherEd world that said it's not okay to misspeak in your instructional videos and probably thousands of people read this and I just want to say that's not actually true.

The mistakes are the best part.

#humanizeOL
#OnlineLearning
One of my least favorite parts of #highered is this hatred of mistakes and being human.
If you restart recording every time you make a mistake you will spend all your waking hours recording videos because you are a human being and we make mistakes. And who does that serve? No one. That time can be put toward your own rest and play or student support.

I want to say a quick thing about pre-course surveys from a #traumaaware perspective. I think they are a great way to connect. AND. Please do not phrase them in such a way that students will feel required to share their stories and trauma with you...

#HigherEd
#OnlineLearning
I think it's okay to say "Is there anything that you'd like me to know so that I can best support you in this class?"

I don't think it's okay to say, "Tell me what challenges you are facing this term."

See the difference?

#HigherEd
#TraumaAware
You can also add a note that the survey is optional. In short, it's critical to make this a choice not a requirement. As @AlexSVenet says, we are not the trauma detectives.
