Since Monday a small but powerful delegation is representing @CREAF_ecologia at #UNOceanConference2022 in Lisbon.

Why are we, a mainly (but not exclusively) terrestrial ecology research center, at #UNOC2022?

As Her Deepness @SylviaEarle says, “no blue 💙, no green 💚”, ‘cuz what happens in & to the #ocean affects the whole world since the ocean absorbs:

🔥 90% of the 🌏 extra heat since the 50s
🫧 1/4 of the CO2 from human emissions

#UNOC2022 #OceanDiplomacy #TurquoiseDiplomacy Image
And what happens in the 💚 also affects deeply the 💙

Our postdoc @ezteliz research focuses on the links between terrestrial and #marine systems, and how river discharges have a great impact on coastal areas, specially #plankton communities.

Thanks @IWS_Network for inviting me to share my story as an #international #immigrant #WomanInSTEM! Throughout this week I will share my journey so far, challenges & triumphs; inviting you to share yours and connect with me if it resonates with you! #VoicesIWS
I grew up in #Delhi #India, a place I still think of as home & where my family still resides. Living in the capital, my parents, sister and I spoke to each other in #tamil, #hindi, & #english. My mom was my first #chemistry teacher. #WomenInSTEM #VoicesIWS @IWS_Network Image
As a teenager I fell in love with the vibrant colors & creative possibilities of the chemistry lab. Nandini ma'am & other excellent teachers, most of whom were #WomenInSTEM at The Mother's International School were my role models. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS #WomenInSTEM Image

#OTD 1975, the Apollo-Soyuz mission began and after two days the vehicles docked in outer space.
There were at least two important outcomes - scientific and diplomatic: brill.com/view/journals/…
(1) The Apollo-Soyuz became the International Space Station prototype, (2) long-term cooperation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union - the states with adversarial intentions - wasn't only possible but vital for maintaining good bilateral relations during the Cold War.
Lesson learned - ignore propaganda/strategic communication issues. The reality is often different.

Recently, we published a policy report to call for a systemic change for 🇪🇺 to better address global challenges through #ScienceDiplomacy multilateral responses. But there are diplomatic stoppers, warnings, and drivers. Here, a 🧵to explain them! s4d4c.eu/calling-for-a-…
🔴#Diplomacy Stopper 1⃣: Nationalisms, protectionisms & populisms. Crises in the EU (euro crisis, migration, Brexit, Euroscepticism, COVID19) affect integration. Permanent Structured CoOperation may promote EU member state cooperation, in #SciDip too? pesco.europa.eu
🔴 #Diplomacy Stopper 2⃣: Socio-political fractures in the EU. Current economic, societal, and ideological fractures exist between North/South, and West/East, which makes both advancing in the European project and ensuring multilateral responses harder.

My #CSPC2019 live tweeting #THREAD starts here!

I'll reply to this tweet w/ each panel I attend, creating a thread under each w/ live notes

My schedule: 🔗cspc2019.sched.com/shawnmcguirk

And, ICYMI, see the new CSPC magazine for my op-ed about @DSP_SPE & #CapacityBuilding in #scipol!
I wasn't intending on tweeting the symposium, but 2 really good points on skills:

🔹 For communications, the ability to be brief (tweet length summaries!) is key

🔹 Universities should promote organic mentorship by leveraging alumni office, get alums to meet students over ☕!
🔹 Skills development has strong socio-economic dimension. Accessibility to good schooling even as early as Kindergarten can have large impacts later in life. The foundation of transferable (read: critical) skills stays with you as you later develop expertise.
