The idea of “living soils” changes our conceptions of soil from a support material or substrate that can be supplemented with inputs, to a new paradigm in which soils are managed for life in an #urban #agroecology

We’re here talking about #urban #agroecology but Rosario is surrounded by 20M Ha of soya monocrop!
A monocrop of soya is not suited to a diverse wetland landscape leading to problems of drainage and soil loss - and are not a food crop for local production but are more of a commodity crop requiring long distance transport to markets / end users
In the same way that a monocrop is not resilient neither is a single high density & waterproof urban form. We need a mosaic of natural, developed and food growing spaces to emable water, nutrient and energy management in the city #urban #agroecology
In terms of addressing flood risk: for an agroecological growing space only 10% of rainfall runs off into surface drainage systems. This rises to over 80% for many fully developed urban areas. Agroecological food growing spaces have a potential role in #urban water management
