#RM_Ott19 @research_money next panel is on IP w/ Erin Campbell @ISED_CA, @psnelgro @CanHealthyOcean, Sumitra Rajagopalan of BioAstra, and Max Skudra @ccab_national
EC: What does IP mean to you, how has your understanding changed over time?
@psnelgro : understood that trainees' careers and training must be prioritized when considering IP. Single IP policies must often be revised on case by case basis
#RM_Ott19
SR: Good IP policy is dependent on monetization policy around it. A sound IP strategy can create win win agreements (e.g. researcher has back end IP, partner gets front end / application IP, so everyone gets benefits in the long run)
EC: What are hurdles for creating IP strategy?
SR: case by case, cannot have an one size fits all umbrella approach. The space to patent new ideas is finite and shrinking, and creative IP strategy may win out in a crowded space.
#RM_Ott19
MS: IP strategy doesn't stand alone. Making one wrong move in a business strategy or in dealing with regulations, especially early on, can be devastating. For indigenous, protecting culture and knowledge can fit into decision making - to be inclusive, this has to be protected
SR adds that companies tried to patent the use of turmeric, which overlapped with how indigenous communities in India use it ➡️ cultural IP is now intrinsically protected in India so this does not happen again. #RM_Ott19
EC: What advice do you have for policymakers?
MS: increasing awareness of Canada's IP system, and the value of IP in general, can help Canada grow. And, do not forget indigenous people in IP discussions!
#RM_Ott19
SR: More resources are necessary, Canadian patent offices do not have a good reputation compared to other major countries. PhD outcomes could consider IP (not just publications), so that trainees learn about IP earlier and understand this system.
#RM_Ott19
#RM_Ott19 @MitacsCanada #cspf @DanielSGregoire asks how open science and innovation will impact the IP landscape?

SR says we can be open and also protect IP once a final patentable product is created. Open yes, but be open and cautious.

@psnelgro says embargo period can protect
EC: Sale of IP and commercialization of IP abroad can be considered a win for research groups, but be a loss for Canadian economy. Are international IP deals worthwhile?
MS: local benefits are a priority esp for indigenous.
#RM_Ott19
SR: patent should be filed where it must be protected. #RM_Ott19
