@stephensackur Interesting that the Myanmar Representative to the UN is talking to you about the genocide of his people. But where was he during the #RohingyaGenocide?! #DrSasa
@BBCHARDtalk
Excellent questions from you about #AungSanSuuKyi and her defence of the Military at the Hague! Extremely convenient for #DrSaSa to place the responsibility of reigning in the Military to China and @ASEAN!
ICYMI, @ASEAN has a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of its member countries. So, @ASEAN's hands have been tied ever since it took #Myanmar in as a member of the regional group!

#Myanmar 🇲🇲 BREAKING: #AungSanSuuKyi has been arrested alongside the country's President according to her party the #NLD.

It seems that the military is commiting a coup.
Unlike before it will be very hard for #AungSanSuuKyi and the #NLD to profile themselves as champions of democracy in #Myanmar 🇲🇲.

In the short period that they were in a shared position of power they allowed the #Rohingya genocide to take place and defended the perpetrators.
That being said the actions of the #Tatmadaw are clearly a coup and the international community should retaliate.

The people of #Myanmar 🇲🇲 deserve better than to go back to the dark days of military totalitarianism.

No lockdown in #Myanmar for now over #COVID19 #coronavirus. But yet ANOTHER committee formed to deal with virus. This time, headed by VP Myint Swe, ex-#Yangon Chief Minister, ex-military general. New committee has 10 members including #defence #homeaffairs #labour #communications
Remember some 2 weeks ago, #Myanmar had formed a national #COVID19 #coronavirus committee led by #AungSanSuuKyi herself when at that time she maintained the nation has no confirmed cases of the virus. Today, the country sees 15 cases with 1 death just reported today (March 31) ImageImageImageImage
So what's the difference between new #COVID19 #coronavirus committee led by #Myanmar #VicePresident Myint Swe & the one headed by defacto leader #AungSanSuuKyi, also looking to tackle the #pandemic? And committee under #VP Myint Swe will report to #SuuKyi or direct to #President? Image

This in addition to many others she heads like #Rakhine @uehrdinrakhine, #BeltandRoad #BRI Initiative team to implement plans & National Reconciliation & Peace Centre (govt pics) ImageImageImageImage
Questions are how effective will various committees be if chaired by #Myanmar state counsellor #AungSanSuuKyi alone? How quickly will members be able to execute the plans/initiatives? Won't there be a bottleneck for decisions to be made? And how will nation groom future leaders? ImageImage

The #ICJ will announce its ruling on #Gambia’s request for provisional measures against #Myanmar on Thursday, in the case alleging #genocide against the #Rohingya. A few thoughts about what to look out for in the Court's ruling in this thread. 1/12
The threshold question is whether #Gambia established all of the required elements to allow the #ICJ to grant provisional measures (prima facie jurisdiction, plausibility of claims, link between PMs requested and the rights at issue, urgency, and risk of irreparable harm)? 2/12
#Myanmar has tried to muddy the waters on jurisdiction and admissibility, but it is hard to imagine the Court not finding that it has prima facie jurisdiction here. Myanmar will have a second chance to make jurisdiction and admissibility arguments at the case's next phase. 3/12
