The element of time is crucial in a city like #Mumbai where things move on the dot & distances are measured in terms of time taken. Did you know that the city once had its own time zone & Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, the #Congress politician resisted attempts to change it? #history
Sir Pherozeshah Mehta (1845–1915) was a #Parsi politician & lawyer known as the Lion of #Bombay. On 3 April, Mehta's statue outside the #BMC headquarters will complete 100 years. Mehta was among those who sought that #BombayTime, a seperate time zone for the city be maintained
Before the official Indian Standard Time was introduced, British India had the #Madras & #Mumbai standard times. The #Madras time was half an hour ahead of that in #Bombay. Some govt offices followed the #BombayStandardTime or #BST, while some followed the #Madras standard time.

The India-Pakistan War of 1971 turned the INS Vikrant into one of India’s shining #war heroes but #didyouknow that this legendary aircraft carrier started life as the HMS Hercules in the Royal Navy? That didn’t stop her from winning glory for the #IndianNavy! 1/10
#navalhistory
It seemed as if the Vikrant - India’s first aircraft carrier - would never see action. She was 28 years old when she played a pivotal role in the ‘Bangladesh War’ of 1971; she was in poor shape; and her speed was just 25 kmph, almost half her designed speed. 2/10
#Indianhistory
But this didn’t stop the old #warship from undergoing sea trials and the rigorous training of her crew, air squadrons and their pilots, in preparation for the impending #war that pitted #India against #Pakistan for the liberation of East Pakistan, or #Bangladesh. 3/10

A thread 🧵- 1/15

#realestate #mumbairealestate #mumbai #bombay #twitterthread
Mumbai is the costliest real estate market in India. Land property prices in Mumbai are not just one of the highest in India but in the world. The reason behind the very high real estate prices is the city's location.

2/15
Mumbai is bordered by the sea on 3 sides. The city has only one side to further expand.

#Onthisday in 1665, #Bombay was handed over by #Portugal to #Britain. But, wait, didn’t that already take place in 1661, when King Charles II of #England got the seven islands of Bombay as dowry? Turns out, things were not quite as straightforward.
1/7
England got Bombay as part of a Marriage Treaty it signed with Portugal on June 23, 1661. It was a diplomatic marriage, where England’s Charles II wed Catherine Braganza of Portugal. Apart from Catherine and Bombay, Britain also got Tangier in North Africa, and a ton of money
2/7
How did the treaty benefit Portugal? At the time, Portugal was battling Spain and Holland. Britain promised to help the Portuguese defend Cochin and recover Ceylon from the Dutch. It would also provide naval assistance to Portugal in its conflict with the Spanish

Bench of Justice SJ Kathawalla and Milind Jadhav had directed for action to be taken against senior inspectors to ensure that the Supreme Court order on installation of cameras is followed.

Read story: bit.ly/3Jsbjer
The Court also sought for a report which was tendered today.

Court: We see that an action has been taken after court passed the order.
Are we supposed to run the administration, spoon feed them? Whatever we have stated (in order) has been reproduced in the ‘paripatrak’.

A revolt of Navy that would have stopped Partition of #India - A thread.
On the slight autumn day of 18 Feburary 1946 a revolt broke out in Royal Indian Navy by the Sailors. Britishers after World War 2 started to reduce the numbers of sailors. Again it’s simple use and throw policy used here. The numbers were to be reduced from 27, 650 to 11,000.
Reasons sailors revolted were:
• Wages were low.
• Food quality was terrible.
• Indian sailors were ill treated by the British officers.
• Britishers called Indian sailors who supported them in World War 2, colies, black bastards.
• Racism in the RNI was at it’s peak.

Of 527 pages on acquittal of Tarun Tejpal, #Goa judge Kshama M Joshi has used around 400 pages, dissecting testimony of the complainant in arriving at how an 'educated journalist' should've known whether she 'pulled up' her underwear or 'picked up'.
Goa court scans the complainant's phone & messages to note that "it was entirely the norm" for her to have flirtatious relationships & sexual conversations with friends & acquaintances.
Since she refused to give access to her email citing concerns of privacy when her phone details had already been used to humiliate her over her personal details, #Goa judge holds that she "wants to hide something."

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)
