One year, I had a grade 3 student in PE who was outgoing & loved to share her ideas & stories. When she came into grade six she was quiet & hid her face. She always wore her coat & would barely speak. When she did, it was almost inaudible. I was startled by this stark change. 🧵
I started working with mom right away, to figure out what went awry and why this girl was acting so differently. Mom said she became very concerned with her clothes over the summer and would stress about what to wear each day. 🧵
After doctor visits, conversations and repeated messages of love it was discovered that she was “counting calories” and eating less than half of what would be recommended for a child her age. The doctor, a counsellor and mom worked with her and slowly she began eating more. 🧵

#PISA

‘The Trojan Horse Scandal and the Problem of Equalities in Britain Today’.

The event examined the scandal from a broad range of perspectives, engaging with debates on #equalities, #liberalism, and #Britishness.

northernnotes.leeds.ac.uk/the-trojan-hor…
It also provided an opportunity to discuss and generate a dialogue about the significance of the 'Trojan Horse’ scandal and the duty placed on schools after the scandal to promote Fundamental British Values (FBV) in the promotion of #democracy.
Speakers analysed how both are reproducing narratives of racial discrimination & inequalities in a context that is informed by minoritising communities, #problematising specific religious #values, & essentialising the signification of social, religious, & cultural identities.

My thoughts regarding the draft K-6 #math #curriculum released by #abed: In the subject introduction, there is a major focus on procedures and skills with a token nod to mathematical understanding; procedures, "foundational skills", and "standard algorithms" are the focus 1/
I appreciate the structure of the curriculum and that each curriculum follows the same structure. Organizing ideas (OI) and guiding questions (GQ) are nice and frame the broader ideas. However, I am not completely clear how the learning outcome relates to the OI/GQ #math 2/
The learning outcomes include an interesting mix of verbs 'acquire', 'interpret', 'explain', 'analyze', 'represent', 'recognize', 'relate', 'appy', 'visualize', and more. Unfortunately, the Knowledge, Understanding, and Skills and Procedures stated do not always fit the verb 3/

When you want to know why
-women & minorities leave medicine
-why research lacks data to serve needs of anyone not white & male
and/or
-why different mortality rates in patients by gender, race, SES

this is why

This is #MedBikini#professionalism” again

#MedTwitter
#MedEd
Is insidious
but highly effective
maintains
-segregation
-different access
-barriers

As women, LGBTQ, minorities, disabled enter or advance in medicine, this professor’s public stance will be cited to mislabel having #ethics as “lacking #professionalism

#medbikini is not one article

We saw this happen with @ayshakhoury and @uche_blackstock and so many others. It especially happens at midcareer to WOC, especially black. Also if Muslim, LGBTQ, disabled, #mentalhealth

So I have been reading through the curriculums #AbEd released and I am not a curriculum expert or teacher, but I do have some very big concerns and worries. Hopefully someone can explain to me the rationale for some of the choices made in this curriculum. #alberta #curriculum
To start, there are very well educated and passionate people I see posting about the #curriculum and using their wisdom and experience to review them. #AbEd I am a parent, uncle, brother, and member of the Nakoda community so that is my lens. #Alberta
And since this #curriculum is being gone through with a fine tooth comb by experts, I will instead give some overarching feedback. #AbEd #Alberta

If you want to understand a woman, look at her mother - at least true of me

My mom? As a new immigrant to America, when she encountered an unfair Eurocentric rule from her English Lit grad program? She wrote a paper & got the rule changed

Smart
Owned her power
Effective
Ethical
My mom and I are the same in core values but opposite externally. She uses maybe 1/100th of the words that I do and is intensely private. I am out climbing literal mountains while she prefers to stay in and read books and my dad’s #engineering journals.

My mom is an introvert who thinks 10x before speaking w/ surgical precision, educated by German nuns & British educational system
We are Urdu-speaking

She is fearless in face of patriarchy

It runs in the family. Have strong, activist #womeninleadership role models in #Pakistan

Imagine a near future in which the fictional University of #Leonia announces a degree program in #DiscardStudies. In doing so, they help to establish this emerging field with a full #curriculum, dedicated faculty, and eager student population. 1/10 @DiscardStudies | #Discard2020 Image
At U of L, teaching discard studies is about more than talking #trash. This new program’s core trains students to use #SystemsThinking to critique #power as the structural force that renders material, people, and land as #waste in a globalized #ColonialCapitalist society. 2/10 Image
Treating objects and organisms as "#disposable" has consequences, but the root of this #WickedProblem runs deep below the surface. Traditional disciplines are insufficient for studying waste bc they focus on the details and fail to recognize the full picture (Brown, 2010). 3/10

Books create belonging. They help us see each other, and understand one another. That's why every young person should have the chance to study books reflecting the racial diversity of UK society. This is how we want to contribute to that vision. #LitInColour (1/4)
We’re excited to join forces with @PenguinUKBooks to commission major new research, as well as the Black Writers’ Guild, @TeachFirst, @LiteracyTrust and partner schools. Change happens when we work together. We add our voices to a movement built over years, by many. (2/4)
Over the next few years our #LitinColour programme will support brilliant teachers making change on the ground to develop an inclusive #EnglishLit #curriculum and increase student access to books by writers of colour. penguin.co.uk/litincolour (3/4)

Hear, hear

As a confident WOC willing to enter male dominated, non-diverse spaces (women >20% of my class & rare in tech)

I hear from men and women:
I take up too much space, I talk too much, etc, etc.

If invited 6x to podcasts in 2019, is that "too much"?
Who decides?
In the marketplace of ideas, lack of women o BIPOC in a space, what is the metric of too much/little? A recent thread on leadership coaching specific to #WIM: importance of having manners if one wants a seat at the table

How about results as the metric?

The manuscript by Copernicus was included in the index of prohibited books, which was published by the Church mentioning the books which were not allowed to be read by devout Catholics Image
The Church hence closed all doors for the creation of new knowledge, relegating the Catholic world into backwardness. On the other hand, Protestant countries free from such religious restrictions created new knowledge & progressed politically economically

Words ‘deleted’ by the Oxford Junior Dictionary in 2015 as irrelevant to modern childhood: acorn, bluebell, conker, dandelion, fern, heather, heron, lark, nectar, otter, pasture, willow.

What we cannot name we will forget.

Words ‘added’ by the Oxford Junior Dictionary in 2015 as relevant to modern childhood: attachment, blog, broadband, bullet-point, celebrity, chatroom, committee, cut and paste, voicemail.

Language is the protein of imagination. With this diet, imagination will fail.
I completely missed this in 2015, or was too distracted to notice. With thanks to Timothy Radcliffe OP for covering it (and so much else) in his new book. Cultural impoverishment is happening right in front of us and teachers are on the front line of the resistance.

So following our recent Ofsted inspection under the new framework, several people have asked me to share my "deep dive" experiences as a HOD of English. Here are the slides I shared with English teachers across our trust this afternoon:
2: Genuinely, it wasn't that bad - I *may* have even enjoyed some parts. If someone wants to know about my department, then I want to be the one to tell them about it. However, it did involve over five hours with an Inspector. Be prepared for a loooong couple of days!
3: Inspector Q1: So. tell me about your curriculum. And I could, as my team and I had spent the summer term redesigning our KS3. Our starting point were the Qs below and we discussed it at length and planned collaboratively

Real privilege getting to share our research on #OER and personalization with the #GoOpen community this morning. (Thanks for having me!) Figured I'd share some our key learning points here... 1/ #curriculum #instructionalmaterials
First off, shout out to the amazing leaders in the #GoOpen community. This work isn't about "free" materials, these folks are digging deep to engage teachers in curriculum, flex to meet unique needs, support effective instruction, and build a community. Super cool. 2/
We started the convo with some definition... what did I mean when using terms like "curriculum" "#OER" and "personalization"? Here was @LearningAccel starting point, curious how others agree/disagree. 3/
