Australia was just singled out as a climate "holdout" by UN secretary General @antonioguterres . It's rare to see him single a country out like this. What does he mean? đŸ§ĩâŦ‡ī¸
👏 Many G20 developed economies have announced meaningful #emissionsreduction targets for 2030.
👎 Not Australia. Scott Morrison still took Tony Abbott's 26-28% emissions target to COP26. This targets is 6 years old.
đŸĨĩThe COP26 conference was focussed on improved 2030 targets and a rapid phaseout of coal (by 2030). Australia refused, making us a loner among developed countries & a "holdout" on climate.

Tamilnadu Government declares India's first #Dugong Conservation Reserve at Gulf of Mannar & Palk Bay. Conserving dugongs means conserving it's habitat. Seagrass meadows is an important habitat in focus here.

This thread is all about Seagrasses

Video @BERTIEGREGORY
Seagrasses are marine flowering plants, found on all continents except Antarctica. They have roots, stems, leaves, flowers &fruits, similar to land flowering plants (angiosperms) 2/n
Seagrasses are found along the coast, in clear, shallow waters that allow light for photosynthesis, to penetrate. Some species occupy the intertidal zone, the area between the highest tide line and lowest tide line, from which the sea retreats at low tide to expose the seabed 3/n

In 2021, Taronga embarked on a new critical phase through the support of the #Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (#RRAP), the world’s largest effort to develop effective interventions to help #coralreefs resist, adapt to & recover from #ClimateChange impacts. @CoralTrace Image
A fundamental principle of #RRAP is to work closely with #GreatBarrierReef Traditional Owners, and engage different stakeholders, community groups and interests in the co-design, deployment and evaluation of proposed interventions or technologies.
Partnerships with Traditional Owner groups regarding #coral cryopreservation work are especially important as corals are transferred from sea country to our frozen biorepositories on Cammeraigal and Wiradjuri Country. gbrrestoration.org/program/engageâ€Ļ #RRAP

#Coralreefs are complex life support systems and their degradation has devastating impacts on marine life and on terrestrial animal populations, including humans. #RRAP
As environmental events and stressors lead to the loss of #coral & threaten the #GreatBarrierReef, initiatives such as Taronga’s CryoDiversity Bank offer a means to secure their current #GeneticDiversity. #RRAP

Taronga’s #science team collaborates on programs that assess and maximise #GeneticDiversity in zoo-based, wild populations, & CryoDiversity Banks (frozen repositories), to promote population resilience & the capacity of species to adapt to change. #RRAP Image
#GeneticDiversity within #wildlife populations relates to long-term survival. Genes affect many things, including body size, #disease, tolerance of temperature extremes, all of which can be important for #CoralReef systems. #Coral #RRAP
Every animal - #frog, #coral or #rhino - is subtly unique and diversity is key for populations to thrive and be healthy. When populations become small and inbred, or ecosystems suffer too much #biodiversityloss, ecosystems collapse. #RRAP

actual photo of @sussanley just now successfully urging the world heritage committee *not* to list the #GreatBarrierReef as “in danger”.

😞

(our gov’t made more calls to stop recognition of the reef’s perilous state than it did to secure covid vaccines.) #auspol
the committee did recognise:
â€ĸ the long-term outlook has deteriorated from ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’
â€ĸ progress to date has been insufficient
â€ĸ climate change remains the most serious threat

â€Ļandâ€Ļ
â€Ļaustralia is required submit a report next february, to be considered at the 45th meeting of the committee in russia this time next year.

hopefully our _next_ minister for the environment will urge the world to save the reef.

As @UNESCO decides whether the Great Barrier Reef is world heritage in danger, it’s crucial to understand the history of the failure of Australian politicians to protect the Reef. Weirdly, it all began with a beautiful promise. A thread: #auspol #ForNature
In 1981 the Great Barrier Reef was declared as World Heritage under UNESCO, and Australia promised the world that “to the utmost of its resources” our nation would “do all it can” to protect the Reef: whc.unesco.org/en/conventiontâ€Ļ
It is important to remember that the Fraser Coalition Government chose to nominate the Great Barrier Reef - and the achievement of World Heritage status was something that we were proud of as a nation. Of course we would protect the Reef!

Hey @ScottMorrison this week your ministers said they were “stunned” & “blindsided” by UNESCO saying that the #GreatBarrierReef should be listed as in danger. Why? Here's a sample of 15 expert warnings in the last 5 years about the mortal threat to the Reef from #climatechange.
In early 2016, the first of recent mass bleaching events occurred in the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists estimated 22% of coral was killed, clearly linked this to climate change and noted the need for urgent action to counter impacts. nature.com/articles/d4158â€Ļ
Also in 2016, the UN released a major report on climate change with a key chapter focussing on the Great Barrier Reef. (You might remember that the government intervened prior to its release, objecting that the information would harm tourism).

Welcome to the #EnvironmentalCampaign archive. This story is about the long running Hinchinbrook campaign to stop a marina/hotel development at Oyster Point near the #GreatBarrierReef.
It began with Keith William’s proposal to create a 250 berth marina, 1,500 dwelling canal estate and a resort with ‘million’ dollar ocean views, requiring the removal of mangroves and dredging for a marina and canal.
Friends of Hinchinbrook (FoH) formed to 1993 to stop the development. The mangrove trees were protected by small groups of activists on 24 hour rosters.Despite being designed as unsuitable for a boat habour in 1977, in 1994 the project was approved.

As #Australia reels from unprecedented bushfires, the disconnect between its vulnerability to #climate change and the inadequacy of its government's response is coming under international scrutiny.
We have produced a mountain of research on this -
👇👇 thread👇👇
1/ #Australia is on fire due in large part to #climate change yet the government is looking for ways to weaken the Paris Agreement by using 40 y. o. Kyoto protocol credits to meet its 2030 targets. We show there's no legal basis for this
bit.ly/Aus_KPCO @TheAusInstitute
2/ Our calculations show just how bad using Kyoto carryover units to meet #ParisAgreement commitments would be for #climate action: an extra 0.1˚C of warming that wld not otherwise hv occurred due to delays in energy & economic system transformation
