The need for addressing environmental concerns has been an integral part of govt policy. From announcing an International #SolarAlliance in 2015 to the #PanchAmrit strategy in 2021, #PMModi Ji laid out a roadmap for India’s energy transition from the day he assumed office.
Hydrogen-based energy has emerged as the best bet for energy dependent countries. It is the cleanest form of fuel with highest calorific value amongst presently available fuels & will play a critical role in driving a paradigm shift towards a green & sustainable global economy.

🚨 New paper 🚨

Green #hydrogen and derived #efuels are critical for #climate #mitigation, but when will they be available at scale?

In a new Nature Energy study, we look at a key bottleneck: the market ramp-up of #electrolysis capacity.

Summary 🧵⬇️

nature.com/articles/s4156…
2/ #GreenHydrogen, produced from renewable electricity via electrolysis, is vital for the #EnergyTransition. In the #EnergyCrisis hydrogen is also considered an option to limit Europe's fossil fuel imports.

However, scaling up supply is a huge challenge!
3/ There's a lot of momentum in electrolysis project announcements. This is also much needed because global capacity needs to grow a staggering 6,000-8,000-fold from 2021-2050 to meet #NetZero scenarios. Yet, most projects still lack an FID, making them uncertain. Image

Everything you need to know about the Green Hydrogen Policy that will be announced today by the Govt of 🇮🇳

A thread 🧵👇🏻
#GreenHydrogen #investing
(1/11)

What is Hydrogen?

• Hydrogen is the simplest & smallest element in the periodic table. However, it can be produced in different ways, and so are the emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide & methane.

3 ways to make hydrogen are
• Grey
• Blue
• Green
(2/11)

• Grey and Blue Hydrogen-

Grey hydrogen is traditionally produced from methane (CH4), split with steam into CO2 – the main culprit for climate change. It is often called brown or black hydrogen instead of grey due to higher CO2 emissions.

We have published an English summary of our hydrogen report: umweltrat.de/SharedDocs/Dow…

Key messages:
Hydrogen is necessary for #climateneutrality, but needs to be used in an efficient manner. Only #greenhydrogen produced from #renewable power can be produced sustainably.
Blue hydrogen is currently discussed as a bridging technology. In our opinion, it is not sustainable due to residual GHG emissions, insufficient short-term #CCS capacity and the risk of #fossil infrastructure lock-in. Therefore, it should not receive public subsidies.
Stringent certification is necessary to minimize the environmental footprint and social issues of hydrogen. This is both true for imports and European production.

An additionality criterion for renewables can ensure that green hydrogen does indeed reduce carbon emissions.

Abro breve 🧵
Y respondo:

Decarbonisation requires making fossil energy more expensive – that’s the whole purpose of carbon pricing. Well, here we have expensive gas & oil! Will this help the energy transition?

Thread! 🧵✍️
The answer is highly unclear because:
1/ higher energy prices promote efficiency, but...

2/ it is now harder to add more price pressure to consumer bills, and

2/ gas prices have pushed electricity prices up, so the relative price of low-carbon energy has not improved
2/ Higher electricity prices bring no good news for the environment as the #GreenDeal relies on electrification to decarbonize polluting sectors of the economy

Expensive electricity will delay much needed investments in electric mobility, electric heat pumps, #GreenHydrogen….

#India recently announced the National Hydrogen Mission & there's growing interest among leading industry players in #greenhydrogen.
But why is green H2 significant for India's #energytransition?
#pressrelease: bit.ly/3l3b8fc
In a new study, we examined how #greenhydrogen can help in cleaner steelmaking. We found that:
▶️9% blend of #green H2 in steel making would ⬇️India's emissions footprint by 68%
▶️This #greensteel would be competitive with upper range of conventional steel costs at current rates
If #greenhydrogen costs fell to 1.3-2.2 USD/kg from the current 4-4.5 USD/kg, steelmaking based entirely on #green H2 could break even with #coal-based processes in #India. Globally, electrolyser manufacturers have already committed to a green H2 cost of 1.5 USD/kg by 2025.
