BREAKING 🚨: Ahmed Rabbani has been released from #Guantánamo Bay after more than 20 years of detention without trial.

Thanks to many of you in this community, Ahmed is finally on his way to meet his son for the first time.

A THREAD 🧵 1/6
In 2002, Ahmed was mistakenly arrested as a wanted extremist and sold to the US. The CIA soon discovered they had the wrong man but tortured him anyway - for 545 days - and sent him to #Guantánamo.

Ahmed was never charged with a crime, and he never had a trial. 2/2
Ahmed’s wife was pregnant at the time of his arrest and just five months later she gave birth to their son, Jawad Rabbani. Jawad has never met his father. 3/3

21 years ago today, I was sent to #Guantanamo gagged, hooded & shackled to the floor of a military plane. I remember the heaviness of the heat, the salty smell of the sea & the ISN they gave me as my name: 0441. I was 19 years old. My photo in camp 6 Guantánamo 2011,
I’ve written about that first day so many times, thinking that if I write it maybe it will lose its power over me. Maybe that memory will let me rest.Although GTMO is a drak place, we managed to find beauty in among us,all of us Muslim men who were detained.hachettebooks.com/titles/mansoor…

Yes we were isolated and disconnected from our families and the rest of the world but even in America’s dark hole, life won, we created our world, yes we were tortured and abused but we also sang, danced, resist, and survived.

VIDEO THREAD: Protesters calling for the closure of #Guantanamo Bay rallied outside the White House Wednesday, the 21-year anniversary of its operations.

@HerbGeraghty said of 35 men still detained by the government, most have never been charged and many are cleared for release.
One speaker described that the demand is not just to close Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, but abolish it.

She references the Biden administration proposal last year to begin sending Haitian migrants to Guantánamo Bay.

The protesters marched to the offices of @washingtonpost, which they hoped to enter.

They say WaPo has given insufficient coverage to the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, but MPD and building security prevented them from going inside.

It is clear that 2022 has seen a surge in momentum, particularly amid Western governments, on repatriations from al-Hol & al-Roj in NE #Syria.

BUT, 519 in 2022 represents just 4% of the third country women & children in the camps. And we're starting with the easy caseload first.
Increasing momentum on NE #Syria repatriations is welcome news -- but to take full advantage of it, the repatriation process needs to be made much easier.

Most cases, from start to finish, can take 12-18 months, which is far too long -- most of the obstacles are in NE #Syria.
There's also a clear need for more centralized multinational leadership on the al-Hol/Roj crisis -- the @ICRC have established a special coordinator's office & the US Govt now has a senior inter-agency working group.

But there's no international leader to better coordinate.

In the year since #Kabul fell to the #Taliban, we still don’t have full answers as to how the Biden Admin failed to see it coming & did not plan to evacuate Americans & Afghan partners. foreign.senate.gov/press/ranking/…
Tens of thousands of Americans, U.S. Legal Permanent Residents, and at-risk Afghans are still left behind in #Afghanistan. This includes American veteran #MarkFrerichs who continues to be held hostage despite the Biden Admin’s many capitulations to the #Taliban.
#HumanRights have plummeted in #Afghanistan. Women and girls are still unable to return to school. Former Afghan officials and journalists are also being targeted and executed by the #Taliban. foreign.senate.gov/press/ranking/…

16 years ago, 3 of my friends were “found” dead in their cages on my cell block, hanging by the neck, hands and feet bound, cloths shoved in down their throats. Their names were Yasser, Mana, and Ali. The #Guantánamo camp admin called them suicides.
رحمهم الله.
This was 6/9/06 and we were in Camp 1’s Alpha block. Yasser, Mana, and Ali and I had been on hunger strike recently and were known by the camp for protesting our indefinite and arbitrary detention, constant harassment, and #torture.
Yasser was barely 17 when he was sent to #Guantánamo and had been sexually harassed by female guards and interrogators. He’d been told he was going to be released soon. He had the most beautiful singing voice.

Thoughts on #ImranKhan: I met him briefly at @AJEnglish studios where we spoke about #Guantanamo. He was disgusted by #Pakistan’s role in handing ppl to US without any legal process like #Afghanistan ambassador to Pakistan @abdulsalamzaeef and me. 1/9
I met him again in 2011 at an event for girls’ library in Afghanistan organised by @yvonneridley. We spoke about #WoT, #Gitmo & #AafiaSiddiqui for whom he’d fought. CIA’s Raymond Davies had killed 3 Pakistanis in #Lahore & we discussed how this was the moment to get her back. 2/9
Khan opposed #WaronTerror from the outset. He marched in #London against #Iraq invasion. After becoming PM he bought peace and security to tribal areas and ended US drone strikes. He sought peace with #Taliban & honoured ppl of #Afghanistan. 3/9

"The unenthusiastic reception at @hmpbelmarsh cd not deter me, but it certainly contributed 2 my rapidly declining of perception of #Britain as a reliable partner in the area of #HumanRights".

@hmpbelmarsh @UN @NilsMelzer @CraigMurrayOrg @johnpilger @medialens @caitoz @Jonathan_K_Cook @ggreenwald @jimmy_dore @johnmcdonnellMP @StellaMoris1 @wikileaks How thoroughly depressing: the #UK's "#Guantanamo" gaol treated @UN official, @NilsMelzer, investigating torture, WORSE than he's experienced in #Ukraine provincial prisons and in #Turkey.

Let that sink in 🤔 Deeply shameful for all UK citizens...

Ministerit @MarinSanna ja @KristaKiuru ,
yhteiskuntaamme kohtaa vakavin kriisi sitten vuoden 1939.
Ottamalla injektion he pysäyttävät omikronin.
So true sanoisi Trump.

If you tuned into the Senate Judiciary hearing on closing #Guantanamo, led by Senator Dick Durbin in #December, you might have noticed that the word #Muslim was only mentioned once.

Thread & my op-ed in @MiddleEastEye below.

middleeasteye.net/opinion/us-gua…
The failure to explicitly confront the role of #Islamophobia in the existence of Guantanamo Bay & the use of torture demonstrates a willful neglect of the fact that neither would have been possible without the dehumanizing logics of Muslims in the War on Terror.
Rather than exhibiting any concern for the Muslims lives that were destroyed by detention at the notorious prison that is Guantanamo, the mainstream discourse prioritizes closing Guantanamo in order to restore the US’ reputation as a country that adheres to the rule of law.

1. today marks the 20th anniversary of #Guantanamo: 780 human beings have been detained there in exceptionally cruel conditions,39 of them are still there, like #AhmedRabbani
2. as a journalist, I still remember the excitement when in 2011 we journalists got access to the detainees files thanks to the courage of @xychelsea,Julian #Assange and the #WikiLeaks journalists
3. the cruelty and atrocity of their treatment have deeply shocked me. As a Western citizen, I don't know how to ask these people to pardon us for the cruel, inhuman, brutal treatment they have experienced in our name

20 years ago, I was sent to #Guantánamo after being sold to the US for bounty. I was 19 years old and didn’t know much about the US. What I learned, I learned at Guantánamo.

The Bush administration said that prisoners held at Guantánamo were all illegal combatants and weren’t covered under the Geneva Conventions.
3/
We lived in dog kennels at Camp X-Ray for the first months, where we weren’t allowed to talk, stand, or pray together. We weren’t told where we were or why we were being detained.

1/10 The recently released @HBO documentary “The Forever Prisoner” ignores the ongoing brutal harms against Abu Zubaydah, the focus of the documentary, and all victims of the “War on Terror.”
2/10 The shortcomings of filmmaker Alex Gibney’s documentary remind us that justice delayed is justice denied and acknowledging harm should be a goal worth pursuing in and of itself.
3/10 Ultimately, Gibney’s film falls short of this goal.

Today on #HumanRightsDay, I'm thinking of former #Guantanamo prisoner Nizar Sassi who said, "if you want a definition of this place, you don't have the right to have rights." (Find the rest of my thoughts in the thread below.)
I'm also thinking about how, despite commemorating a day meant to celebrate universal human rights, that many in the global majority are denied these rights, with some outright expelled from the global community on the basis of being undeserving.
I'm thinking about the Palestinian people, the Sudanese people, and everywhere else across the globe where people are rising up against state violence and repression. I'm thinking of those who take their rights whether or note the state decides to bestow rights upon them.

3. what I am trying to tell you is: when the Crown Prosecution Service (#CPS) tries to argue that the Julian #Assange's health is not in such a bad shape, hence he can be extradited, just consider how #CPS looked at his health. This is an official document from my #FOIA
