We are discovering exciting things about how therapeutic nutritional ketosis could benefit those living with serious mental illnesses. It's time for a short thread about two main ways this could be happening. 🧵 (1/13)
First is the direct effect of ketones. Scientific studies have shown that people with serious mental illnesses often have trouble using glucose efficiently for fuel. Ketones supply fuel that doesn't depend on insulin or the cell's ability to metabolize glucose. (2/13)
By providing the brain with this alternative fuel source, ketones can help enhance energy production and improve cognitive function in people with serious mental illnesses. (3/13) #lifechanging

What's the state of physicians knowing about ketogenic diets are a treatment for brains? Not so good yet. 🧵 (1/5)
But we are working on it! And we are not going to stop until everyone gets to know that a ketogenic diet is one of the ways they can feel better! (2/5) #mentalillness #neurotwitter

Did your doctor refer to the #ketogenic diet as a fad? Well, I'm sorry. But you're going to have to take a moment to educate them. 🤷‍♀️It's time for a thread. 🧵(1/7)
A common concern is that the ketogenic diet is just a fad weight loss diet & won't help with mental illness. This is far from the truth. (2/7)
The ketogenic diet has been used as a medical intervention for over 100 years to treat seizures in children with epilepsy. It's also used for adults with epilepsy. (3/7)

Talking to your doctor about implementing a #ketogenicdiet to treat your mental illness or neurological disorder? Are they under the impression #ketosis is a medical emergency?
You're going to have to educate them! #neurotwitter #mentalillness #brainhealthmatters
The confusion arises as #Physicians are taught about #Ketoacidosis, a severe condition in people with Type 1 Diabetes or alcoholism. The determining factors for Ketoacidosis are either a lack of insulin with high blood sugar & ketone levels above 5mmol/L or severe malnutrition.
But being in Nutritional #Ketosis is normal & healthy, and should not be equated with Ketoacidosis. It's important to educate ourselves & our #physicians about the difference between these two concepts.

Starting a ketogenic diet? Ease into it. It's more comfortable and practical for most people to go slow, especially if you're on certain meds that affect blood pressure or blood sugar. 🧵(1/5)
Some of you are going to want to go fast and restrict carbs low right away. That's just more of your style. Just know that sustaining this big behavioral change can be easier to maintain when you give yourself a few weeks to get used to what you are doing. (2/5)
Regardless, it's important to set yourself up for success by working with someone who knows you and can help you figure out the best approach for your lifestyle, personality, and likes and dislikes when implementing a #ketogenic diet for #mentalillness. (3/5)

What are the brain changes we see with a #ketogenic diet? This thread will refer to a published paper on #bipolar, but I want you to understand that any mental illness or neurological disorder will benefit from these changes. 1/13
First, let's begin by discussing changes in energy. Ketone bodies are a primary energy source for the brain leading to more efficient ATP (energy) production. They increase vascular density, which means more nutrition and oxygen for the brain. 2/13
Increased ketone bodies increase brain metabolism. You would think being able to burn more energy in a bipolar brain is a bad idea, but when there is an energy problem in the brain, neuronal structures become stressed and hyperexcitable. 3/13

My younger brother was found dead in his apartment. He was 46 years old. His story is a family tragedy. It illustrates the importance of recognising mental health issues early. My parents and I are devastated. In the pic, he's in the middle. #mentalhealth #mentalillness
My brother was a handsome, blonde haired-kid. He was two-and-a-half years younger. Our relationship was typical. Sparring siblings but friends in the same household. We were never close, but united in an upbringing from loving, caring parents. But we were different.
Teachers noticed. I abided by rules, did well in school. He started to have behavioural issues. When he was in second or third grade, teachers began asking an odd question to my parents: Is he from your family? To them, the difference between us was stark.

Trying desperately not to think about it but having been inadvertently given access to all of my GP notes on system one including psychiatric notes when I was only trying to access a copy of my summary care record is very unsettling. I had deliberately intended never to read 1/
any of my notes. Having worked for the #NHS in some capacity intermittently since 2005 (including time as an admin assistant to a #MHA office) and as a doctor since 2011 I am acutely aware that medical notes can sometimes be brutally dehumanising. I understand it is @rcpsych 2/

Psychiatric disorders often have a dynamic trajectory, with a "precipitating stressor" causing an initial destabilization that leads to a "first break" or onset of the disorder. (1/4) #mentalillness #mentalhealthmatters
Even after periods of remission, another stressor can cause a relapse, and many psychiatric disorders have a periodic element. (2/4) #neurology #metabolicpsychiatry

One consequence of the NHS withdrawing from providing care for folks with severe & enduring #mentalillness is that poorly & vulnerable folks are thrown onto the unregulated private market & things like wellness industry woo

This puts them at risk of neglect, & also active harm
When mainstream medicine refuses to help folks who've been diagnosed with serious #mentalillness, they're forced to look elsewhere

Folks with ongoing conditions don't just stop being unwell because the NHS decommissions services for them & excludes them from care

#mentalhealth
With NHS #mentalhealth services ignoring national guidance & local policies, with the NHS no longer commissioning care for folks with serious #mentalillness, professionals & patients are left guessing what to do

Forced to improvise, to look to social media, rely on folk remedies

For #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, my memoir about living with mental illness, FINAL GIRL, is only $1.99!

So please consider getting a copy now for you, your friends, your family, or heck, your enemies. (I don't judge, y'all.)

books2read.com/b/finalgirl Final Girl book cover on an ereader and a paperback book wit
So, let's talk about FINAL GIRL a little bit.

A heads up: It's a book #MentalIllness, but it is also a book about childhood abuse, trauma & grief.

If any of those are triggers for y'all, this might not be the book for you.
So, FINAL GIRL didn't start out as a book, which is the case for most of my books.

It started out as a few essays that I wrote over a couple of years about my abusive biodad.

Here's the first one I wrote:

#NaomiJudd’s death is tragic, but unfortunately suicide isn’t uncommon when someone seeks help for #mentalillness under the western, allopathic model, which uses drugs proven to cause suicidality. I’m six years off drugs & no longer suicidal & was psychotic on them for years.
I’m over seeing people post #SuicideAwareness when our culture’s first line is to prescribe mind altering, toxic drugs to people & and the longer you’re on them, the more your chance for #Alzheimers or dementia increases. Spare me the fake hashtags. Go do some real research.
People are like, “Oh how tragic!” “Oh, she had so much to be happy for!” Naomi & Ashley have been very honest that their family had TRAUMA, and in this messed up medical model the SYMPTOMS of trauma are used to diagnose people as mentally ill. These drugs do NOT help with trauma.
