I'm heading home from the #CUTA2023ACTU conference in Saskatoon. Decided to take the train home because it was <1/2 the price of flying, and I thought I could work, relax, and read during the 14 hour trip.

It was supposed to leave here at 7 am and arrive in Winnipeg at 10 pm.
When I woke up this morning, it said it was delayed till 1:15 pm - over 8 hours! Then the estimated departure kept on getting earlier and earlier, so I headed to the station and made it just in time for the newly-estimated 11:45 departure.

The station is basic, but functional. ImageImageImage
The train finally arrived at 11:50, went past the station, sat there, and then backed in to the station.

I was finally able to get on board at 12:15, and I think we'll be leaving by 1:15. Image

In January 2000, Darrell Night was abandoned outside Saskatoon by two police officers. He is remembered for speaking out against this practice of "Starlight Tours."

Night passed away earlier this month at age 56. ImageImage
Two officers were convicted in Night's case. Investigations into the deaths of Naistus and Wegner were inconclusive.

Night was essentially kidnapped, taken away and left to die on an extremely cold winter night on the outskirts of Saskatoon.

I wrote about the attempted murder of Darrell Night previously in this thread on police brutality in Canada almost exactly two years ago.

Prompted by a friend and sex educator in rural Illinois, I was curious about how easy it was to access affirming information on sex and gender in the public library system in #Saskatchewan. I thought I'd start off easy, and search simply for the classic "Our Bodies, Ourselves."
Searching through the Parkland Library system (Yorkton), the results shocked me. These were the first three results. The first title is a book on getting sober; the second is a holistic health book, and the third is a book on the big tech hijacking of the mind and body.
The 1984 version of Our Bodies, Ourselves, with one copy in the province, was 10th on the list, and the 2011 version (still 11 years old) was 16th, with 5 copies across the province, and none in the largest urban centres of Regina and Saskatoon. Curious, I decided to search

🇨🇦 Excellent report by @Breanna_KS about the Edmonton Police Service's "secret" surveillance plane, but it leaves a lot of questions unanswered, like, how didn't I notice that one before?

Let's go over (granted, with hindsight) all the details.

👮 🛩️ 👋
Let's look up the obvious, planes with an owner of "Edmonton"

There are 4 plane owners with that word in their name:
‣ Edmonton Soaring Club ❌
‣ Edmonton Flying Club ❌
‣ City Of Edmonton ✅
‣ Edmonton Regional Helicopters Inc. ❌
Re-do the search using the correct owner:

The City of Edmonton own four Canadian-registered aircraft:

‣ C-FEPS Eurocopter EC120B
‣ C-FEPU Aerospatiale AS350 B3
‣ C-GEPS Aerospatiale AS350 B3
‣ C-GMXM Cessna 182Q ✅

Wow. Tonight's Doctor's Town Hall. Yep, it's bad, #SK.

This 🧵 will highlight 3 of my #Saskatoon colleagues being blunt & honest.

SUMMARY: no public health measures + unideal vaccine uptake + no staffing capacity in hospitals = #SK hospitals/ICUs in big 💩.

1/ #COVID19SK
We'll start w/ @WheatNOil below.

Delta is ++ contagious. We haven't vaccinated enough people. So hospitals ARE going to be overwhelmed, #YXE facilities already in trouble.

Don't get sick in #SK for next 2-3 months - there won't be space.

2/ #COVID19SK

Next, @hinz_tamara below.

Community transmission MUST be lowered via:

✅ Vaccine / testing for HCWs/teachers, access to large venues, etc.
✅ Indoor mask mandates
✅ Consider passports for non-essential events.
✅ Reduced gathering sizes.

5 years ago during one of the world's worst refugee crisis, 🇨🇦 stepped up to resettle 73K Syrian refugees.

This didn't happen by itself, it took leadership👇🏾

Thread:
Our Govt did not accomplish this on our own, it was only made possible b/c of the generosity of Canadians in 350+ communities. 🇨🇦

They opened their homes & hearts from Cape Breton, to Montreal, to Mississauga, to Altona, to Calgary, to Kelowna. We saw the country step up. 👏🏾
I will never forget the young girl who broke down and embraced me in #Saskatoon at a summer camp, hosted by the International Women of Saskatoon, who told me she finally felt safe in her new home.

CONFIRMED: Félix Le Chat daycare is closed today. In a letter obtained by CBC, parents were told a second person who regularly frequented the daycare tested positive to #COVID19. The daycare is located in the Haultain neighbourhood in #Saskatoon. #covid19sk Image
Just reached the spokesperson for the daycare. She tells me no comment for now. I will keep you updated as I learn more and as the story unfolds.
The daycare is located in the same building as the École canadiennne-française school. I was on site today and can confirm that students are in school today at ECF. #skpoli #covid19sk

1/ Chadwick Boseman gave us Black Panther. A masterpiece. A powerful portrayal of black excellence. A unique exploration of African history, aesthetics, diversity. An imaginary world that expanded the possibilities of black lives.
2/ I watched #BlackPanther on a winter day in a theatre in #Saskatoon. I wanted it to be an event. In the middle of the Prairie, I wore a whole African attire to go watch it. I walked out of there reassured by the beautiful imagery & the gripping #Fulani music
RIP Chadwick.
I think of black resilience and the ideals we project unto our superheros. Their humanity and ours. #BlackPanther #RipChadwickBosman

Lindsay Sanderson is a Saskatoon mom who says she won’t send her son to kindergarten come September. She’s protesting in front of Education minister, Gord Wyant’s office. "I’m angry. We’re not going away."

Sanderson wants smaller class sizes, more funding for janitorial services in schools, alternative learning options for immunocompromised students. She joined other Canadians who are pushing back against their provincial governments back-to-school plans. #safeschoolscanada #skpoli

Dispatches from the #Prairies

1/ Hearing instances of Black women being barked at on the streets of #Saskatoon and wondering about backlash after #BlackLivesMatter

This is not new here.

We have seen Indigenous people behind attacked around Gerald Stanley's trial. #skpoli
2/ We’ve seen thousands of people on the streets of various Saskatchewan cities during the #BlackLivesMatter protests in a province that rarely accounts for Black lives.

With more people out after covid related post-confinement in the province, I seriously wonder about this.
3/ Very important to have a historical perspective and to connect the dots on race issues in this province where the Black population has more than tripled in the same period of time in 20 years. And where the Indigenous population is rapidly growing.

Dispatches from the Prairies
1/ I ran into a Black man in Duck Lake, Sask. We stopped to say hi and talk. It is that rare to run into a Black person in the town of 600 people. He is among the growing number of Black professionals moving into small Prairie towns. #canpoli #skpoli
2/ We also stopped to talk to each other because of our shared humanity in a place that Black people inhabit, but rarely accounts for their existence. #canpoli #skpoli
3/ Now, the question is : will he stay in Duck Lake? In the last 110 years, there has been various times in history, when Black people who come to live and work in the Prairies end up leaving. It happened with the first Black pioneers in Sask. Some stayed. Some left. #canpoli
