Speaking as someone who studies anxieties about malingering and their connections to health, disability, & social policy, the framing of this NYT article is enormously problematic.

The Man Who Filed More Than 180 Disability Lawsuits nytimes.com/2021/07/21/mag…
The article is well-written, but it leaves out an enormous amount of context. Most importantly, ADA and disability law violations are de rigeur. They are common, frequent, every day occurrences. Ask people w/ mobility impairments how airlines handle their wheelchairs.

2/
Ask hearing-impaired or Deaf people about the availability of SL-fluent interpreters in public accommodations. And on and on and on. It's endless.

As w/ most forms of civil rights and antidiscrimination laws in the US, the rules are observed in the breach.

Thrilled to participate in today’s @PMTC2021 conference and talk about meeting students where they are at (figuratively and literally). My greatest insecurity preparing for teaching in Fall 2020 was how to create a sense of community in the classroom for a course that had never before been delivered online. Summer 2020 reading: #MOOCs! #CourseDesign! #Tech! #UniversalDesign! #Stress! #PandemicMethodologies
Reimagining “Intro to Anthro of Health” required boldness. I looked to @DanielPaulOD’s unessay (tinyurl.com/4b2uezvv): to throw out the rules of essay writing and welcome speculative work. This semester was the right one to take a risk. #PandemicMethodologies

#UniversalDesign asks that you think about accommodations BEFORE you begin your course planning. I'm really passionate about UDL because I know how hard it is for students to secure accommodations and ensure they're followed. 1/9
There are huge barriers to securing accommodations. First of all, students need medical diagnoses. Yet we know women, students of color, and other minority students are less likely to be taken seriously by medical professionals. 2/9
Accommodations also cost a lot of money, even if you're privileged enough to have insurance coverage. It also costs time, access to medical specialists, and proper screening. Few people have access to that, so accommodations at best are a marker of privilege. 3/9

Today, I was asked by an old couple to repair their mobile near my house. It was a feature phone. Took the battery out and put it back. Older people still find it difficult to do simple things in mobile as we are talking about IoT & digital India. Accessibility and Image
Internal Locus of Control is a big challenge in India. We researched in foreign countries and created things for their progressive society mental model that is available at disposal in abundance to them & then relaunched that same thing back in home with class peer pressure to
make it sell. Our progressive ideology is supported on top of hollow straws. It's never how fast can we innovate but how fast can the User adapt. Here in this case of Universal Design our user is all of the countrymen! #universaldesign #accessibility #userresearch #India #society

I've known I have #ADHD for 4 years. I've known I'm #dyslexic & Autistic for 2 months. This semester, I've spent enormous time/energy understanding what this means for me. I am relieved & unbelievably excited; I've found an incredible #ActuallyAutistic community through Twitter;
& for the FIRST time in my life (let that sink in) I'm seeing other people talk about experiences that mirror my own. I understand myself in a way that I have tried to find words for my entire life. (TY @SNeurotypicals @steve_asbell @autistictic @A_Silent_Child) #ActuallyAutistic
I'm also navigating grief. I now see the ways I'm called to & do invalidate, erase, & hurt myself in the "necessary" betrayal of my needs to exist in a neurotypical, "appropriate" way. Camouflaging causes negative health outcomes & creates #healthdisparities #NMHM2020 #Autistic

I was humbled in our "Embodied Vehicle" @AutomotiveUI workshop today. When we proposed it, we were thinking of discussing:
1) symbiosis between vehicle & driver
2) communicate telematics data to human senses
3) respond to driver's intent from physio data
4) and more...

1/6
That was, until we asked the participants to complete the sentence. "The Embodied Vehicle is...".

A participant stated matter-of-fact,"The Embodied Vehicle is one that is currently designed for male bodies." 2/6
Another female participant chimed in,"My husband bought a [SUV]. Adjusting the seat to reach the pedals means that I choke myself with the seatbelt. Also, the seat doesn't fit. I wished I didn't feel every bone in my pelvis every time I braked." 3/6

My first presidential address to the @MineralAreaCC faculty and staff went very well! Such great people to work with, I can't wait to meet them all. I was able to present my vision for the future of MAC today and some of my key points are in this thread, enjoy! #POMAC
@MineralAreaCC Salary Equity

Making a basic cost-of-living increase each year a priority goes a long way in valuing people. Money doesn't equal happiness in employment, but feeling valued does. Knowing your place of employment cares enough to make this a priority is priceless. #POMAC
@MineralAreaCC Accessibility and Tuition

Currently, @MineralAreaCC has one of the lowest tuition rates in the state. This is important for accessibility of our low income region and helping students leave without debt.

What I learnt across 3 days attending sessions on accessibility and disability at the Internet Governance Forum: intgovforum.org/multilingual/

(thread)
- accessibility for disabled users is a long way down the list of priorities
- accessibility for those of us with invisible/cognitive differences is even further down that list
- accessibility is something of a dirty word for both designers and clients. It's seen as an imposition, compromising "good" design and stifling creativity and creative freedom.
- very few people recognise what an accessible web site or app actually looks like

Dear people who identify as having #disabilities fam,

I’m writing to you as your Mayoral Candidate because the media & supporters of status quo are doing their very best to exclude Black Candidates voices- as usual.

Have you been co-signing maintaining the status quo?

#TOpoli
Have you compromised your needs and made agreements against the interests of #accessibility #inclusion, in order to maintain the status quo?

Are you amplifying voices presented to you by the establishment?

#TOpoli #ElectionTO #TORONTO #OurCityHallToo #OurTorontoToo #OurCityHall
Have you turned away from your public chants of “#accessibilityNOW, #inclusion, #equity, #universalDesign, etc...” during this Election period & are instead prepared to publicly/quietly push what the establishment has been pushing just to get the results you’re against?

#TOpoli
