1/ I’m a big fan of @theCCCuk but this report makes the false assumption that the public won't accept change.
Which leads them to rubber stamp hugely costly, discredited tech like carbon capture and blue hydrogen, ignoring cheaper, superior options.
The evidence... 🧵
2/ First, the issue in brief. Then the solutions.
There are no independent studies proving blue hydrogen works as a low carbon option. There IS a study that shows it's as bad for climate as burning coal.
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10… UK likely slightly less bad, but FAR from 'clean'. Image
3/ New rules for calculating blue hydrogen emissions look like they were written by big oil:
🙉Ignore construction emissions
🙉Ignore downstream leaks of hydrogen (33x more potent than CO2)
🙉Applicants can use their own fugitive methane %
🙉 & more..

🚨PAPER🚨

"Many scenario analyses suggest that #NegativeEmissionTechnologies, such as #bioenergy with carbon capture and storage & #afforestation, are required to achieve #NetZero target, but their large-scale deployment has a trade-off relationship with food security."
🧵

So, a new study considered an innovative #NET, "direct air carbon capture and storage (#DACCS), and analyzed its impact on global food access based on an indicator defined by food expenditure per GDP."
2/7
Study found that "the scenario considering DACCS mitigates the adverse impact on food access in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa compared to the scenario not considering #DACCS by alleviating food expenditure increase & GDP loss associated with emission reduction efforts."

Today we publish the 1st edition of the "State of Carbon Dioxide Removal" report, a global assessment of the current #StateofCDR, and the gap we need to close to achieve the Paris temperature goal.
Full report➡️stateofcdr.org
An ongoing 🧵
[1]
This report compiles a first estimate of the total CDR being deployed (2 GtCO2/yr).
Almost all comes from "conventional" CDR on land, via afforestation, reforestation & forest management.
"Novel" methods don’t contribute much yet.
#StateofCDR
[2]
We provide a calculation of total gross CDR in #IPCC-assessed pathways to keep warming below 1.5C and 2C, including all methods. All pathways involve substantial cumulative CDR volumes (450-1100 GtCO2 by 2100) - in addition to immediate & deep emissions reductions

Mind-blowing that SAI #SRM is taken seriously.
As is deabte about geoengineering #CDR #BECCS #DAC #CCS to "save" 1.5 right now, while mitigation hasn't even been tried to take seriously/started to be acted upon. Reading this report takes me forever because it makes me furious.
White man from Global North:
"Perhaps Brazilians watching recent television footage of dying children in Ethiopia and Sudan would be glad to have their own rainfall reduced to 2000 mm a year when necessary." or geoengineering is a humanitarian endeavor! 🤡

But evironmentalists are like the people who hated anaesthetics because they wanted to punish women in childbirth for their wicked things done, which they did not do with men! is apparently also possible as a white man's argument for geoengineering. heraldscotland.com/news/15540151.…

The #IPCC #AR6 WG3 report includes a comprehensive assessment of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), its role in mitigation strategies and long-term pathways, but also a techno-economic assessment of ~10 CDR methods
An ongoing 🧵
[1/n] Image
For Carbon Dioxide Removal, it's still early days in #climate policy, although there are already established methods (mainly forestry-related and soil carbon sequestration, not necessarily done to remove CO2)
In #AR6 reports, there aren't chapters dealing solely with CDR
[2/n]
There was quite some CDR coverage already in the #AR6 Special Reports on 1.5°C (#SR15) and on land (#SRCCL). In WG I, CDR was mainly assessed in chapter 5 ('Biogeochemical Cycles'), and a bit in chapter 4

If you ever wanted to acquire #carbonoffsets, you've surely faced the question of categorization. Here is an easy taxonomy 👇 🧵
1/ Two weeks ago I highlighted the difference between carbon emission reduction and removal projects.

The idea of #CarbonReduction is to pay others to reduce emissions in your place. But your output remains in the system. One plus zero.
2/ #CarbonRemoval on the other hand scrubs carbon directly from the atmosphere. Plus one, minus one.

But technically, the #carbonmarket makes no difference. A ton is a ton.

Getting the whole world to #netzero #GHGs rapidly is going to be incredibly difficult. But given how strong and organized the #climateopposition is, we must distinguish #thesignalfromthenoise on which pathways are the most likely to succeed. A 🧵 on how I think about this 1/14
2/ First, we cannot rely on social and lifestyle change governed by new paradigms like degrowth to deliver in time for this #climatedecade. But if the movement delivers small reductions in energy or meat consumption, we need it jackrabbithomes.org/can-we-save-th…
3/ #Technologyandpolicy (and politics) need to do the heavy lifting. Can they deliver? Yes, but to effectively channel our efforts and fight off the opposition, we need to distinguish between main courses, side dishes and poison pills (frequently buried in the side dishes)

#carboncapture is a unique set of tech because it has a dual role in addressing #climatechange. It can help to reduce emissions from point sources, AND it can remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

Let that sink in.
There are not many solutions out there that do both.

All #carbonremoval approaches (natural or technological) have their advantages and challenges/limitations, my overview looks into #BECCS and #DACCS.

We have a new paper out on how to use rocks to pull #CO2 out of the air and stabilize it as...rocks.

TL;DR: Surface rocks in Japan could remove 7.6 Gt-CO2/y at 1.5 GJ/t-CO2.

It's open access, so send it to your mother. I know I did.

A thread.

iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108… Image
1/n
We started with a map of all the surface rocks in Japan (~158,000 entries) including the depth of the formations. We narrowed it down to rocks with high Mg or Ca content. We then removed all populated areas, protected ecosystems, etc. to make a map of potential sites. Image
2/n
...this leads to a potential #CDR of 15,591 Gt-CO2...so more than we need for #2DS.
But, most of that rock is volcanic (amorphous).
Previously we found that amorphous compounds react >1,000X slower than equivalent crystalline compounds.

The IMF says we can increase economic growth over the next 15 years and decrease emissions to net zero by 2050

Hey ⁦@GrogsGamut⁩ I don’t think I’d be relying on IMF for advice on climate change. They’ve financed a vast array of ecocidal projects. theguardian.com/business/comme…
The World Bank & IMF have been involved in literally dozens of ecocidal projects with disastrous outcomes, in the name of economic growth. These have caused massive loss of C sink forests & have contributed to climate change. Eg $600m loan for Indonesia’s transmigration.
About Transmigrasi see the details here. It was known to have severe ecological impacts at the time but of course World Bank financed it in the name of ‘growth’. Now we’re all paying the price. @dynamat

Those w/ $ will own #nature.

The very corporations that have brought us to the precipice of #ecological #collapse - will now be appointed as the new stewards of nature. This has been dubbed (#XR Business - Elkington/Volans) as the new biosphere economy.

I finally got around to watching the Apocalypse Cow documentary (Channel 4, George Monbiot) the other night. Like Monbiot, I do not eat meat/fish or drink milk. I'm still gathering my thoughts on the doc,. however, here are my thoughts thus far.
All nature is now being recognized as an object to be bought/sold, traded on wall street. And this is what perhaps bother me most about the doc. As I can see the intent / purpose behind it. It's not as though Monbiot does not know about the #NewDealForNature. He does.
Consider most, if not all of his "allies" are at the helm or support the #NewDealForNature, led by WEF, WWF, UN, Natural Capital Coalition, Conservation Int., etc. And of course, both Monbiot & Thunberg did the promotional video for CI. #Celebrity is utilized to serve capital.

1. After the 2018 @IPCC_CH report spelled out the difference between a 2 Degree and 1.5 Degree world, here's a few thoughts on tomorrow's #SRCCL report that will put the spotlight on how the way we use our land will affect our odds of hitting 1.5 degree and what this means for EU
2. Firstup, despite the deeply worrying state of land use, the existence of the report itself, ahead of the @UNClimateSummit this September and two crucial COP's next year on climate and biodiversity is an important step forward
3. Secondly, it represents a growing consensus on where the solutions are; restoring ecosystems (in particular peatlands), reducing meat consumption and production, securing indigenous land rights

As we peel back the layers of an orchestrated movement that serves to protect the ruling classes & the suicidal capitalist system itself, we need to look at Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. This will be a long & important thread. #FridaysForFinance
The Compact of Mayors officially merged w/ the Covenant of Mayors in 2016. The Global Covenant of Mayors [for Climate and Energy] unites more than 9209 cities (already committed) in 132 countries across 6 continents. This represents the world's largest coalition.
The Board is co-chaired by European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič and former New York City Mayor and U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Action Michael Bloomberg. Former UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres serves as Vice-Chair.
