1/9 <-- Buckle up...

@Microsoft invests $1Billion into @OpenAI with the express purpose of building "Beneficial artificial general intelligence (#AGI)."

Mark my words, here's what you can expect:
-- A number of Chinese initiatives of a similar overtly AGI-focused nature
-- Maybe one such similar initiative in Japan/EU (but with notably less funding and fanfare than those in #USA/#China)

(#Europe will try to compete w/regulation, not AGI itself -…)
-- AGI players (there are VERY few- Microsoft, @Google, @Facebook, maybe @Baidu_Inc, Tencent) will pour more resources into the AGI race, and will mud-sling the dangers or "selfishness" of their rivals

In truth, all will be vying for power, by innovation or feigned virtue.

1\3… | #CCP continues to project naval influence in SE Asia by targeting corrupt authoritarian gov'ts backed by Chinese loans & the CCP's diplomatic clout. Together, Cambodian facilities & China's military outposts in the South China Sea would create 2\
2\3 a triangular perimeter controlled by Beijing that effectively boxes in all of mainland Southeast Asia. This threatens the independence of Taiwan, making it very difficult for the U.S. to support Taiwan if Beijing decides to attack and overtake the Island #FreeHongKong #Taiwan

Secret Deal for #Chinese Naval Outpost in #Cambodia Raises #US Fears of Beijing’s Ambitions - Use of Ream naval base would help China’s military project power across a broad swath of Southeast Asia…
China has signed a secret agreement allowing its armed forces to use a Cambodian navy base near here, as Beijing works to boost its ability to project military power around the globe, according to U.S. and allied officials familiar with the matter.
The pact—signed this spring but not disclosed by either side—gives China exclusive rights to part of a Cambodian naval installation on the Gulf of Thailand, not far from a large airport now being constructed by a Chinese company.

Not surprising that #China‘s lying about its demographic data. We can’t trust the #CCP’s numbers. Ex.: Communist authorities say #Uyghurs’ population numbers ~10M, yet #Uighurs routinely insist to me that #EastTurkistan’s (“#Xinjiang’s”) overall Turkic pop. is 2x to 3x that (!)…
… if that’s any truth to that, then the actual numbers of detained persons in #EastTurkistan could be even *higher* than estimated (as estimates that “1 out of every X number of people are detained” would be skewed if we‘re starting by underestimating the base population)…
… those types of estimates tend to come about by looking at the number of people “missing” from everyday places, like markets. The other types of estimates come from looking at the theoretical holding capacities of detention facilities, but these estimates are problematic, too…

#Europe Joins #US Companies Moving Out Of #China - Make no mistake about it, the trade war is absolutely remapping global supply chains … to the detriment of Chinese manufacturing.…
The percentage of China-leaving businesses surveyed by quality control and supply chain auditor QIMA was 80% for American companies and 67% for those based in the European Union.
QIMA has more than just anecdotal evidence. Demand for their China-based audits dropped by 13% as mainland manufacturers are either losing their foreign clients faster due to costs associated with tariffs or are relocating manufacturing out of China to avoid those tariffs.

As Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan gears up for his first high-level visit to the United States, experts believe that Islamabad is playing a double game in managing affairs between Washington and Beijing -- the two rival economies.
Pakistan remains China's closest ally & actively aids, abets & promotes Beijing's strategic goals & hegemony in the region. However, Pakistan knows its strategic significance in the region & hence leaves no stone unturned to convince the US to gain financial & military assistance

Thread: #Philippines Carpio slams #China’s 'double standard' in warship passage near Tawi-Tawi - Although the Philippines observes China's right of innocent passage in its waters, China consistently stops Filipinos from patrolling parts of its waters…
A Chinese warship passed through Philippine territorial waters 2-3 weeks ago, said Supreme Court Justice Carpio, adding that it showed China’s "double standard" since it never allows Filipino vessels free passage in waters Beijing claims to be its territory in the WP Sea.
"I got verified information that the Chinese aircraft carrier, has passed through the Sibutu Passage, which is within our archipelagic waters, within our territorial waters,” Carpio told reporters at a forum at the University of the Philippines Diliman on Friday, July 19.

No reply from #China to #US call for #SouthChinaSea crisis talks - Admiral Philip Davidson slams Chinese muscle flexing over disputed waters. No response to ‘standing ask’ for a communication mechanism to reduce threat of miscalculation…
A senior US military commander has slammed Beijing for flexing its muscles over the South China Sea, and for not responding to Washington’s call to set up a crisis communication mechanism.
Davidson said Washington and Beijing were having an “ongoing dialogue” at the military level, but a crisis communication mechanism was needed to reduce the threat of miscalculation. Competitive does not mean don’t engage.

Thread: #Nepal-#China railway plans hit a dead end - The proposed rail link between Nepal and China will be challenging to build and cost billions of dollars…
The ambitious Nepal-China rail link, which is expected to break the tiny Himalayan nation’s sole dependence on India for trade and transit, is looking financially unfeasible as disagreements crop up between principal stakeholders.
There is no consensus among political actors about how this project, which is part of the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, should be funded. Moreover, the railway would be challenging to build. The mountainous terrain poses a major challenge.

#China’s maritime militia reaches #IndianOcean with worrying consequences - In June 2019, #SriLanka allowed a Chinese fishing company to use Dikkowita harbour, north of Colombo to fish in international waters & also allowed them to fly the Sri Lankan flag…
What better ruse could China seek? Why would Chinese vessels demand to fly the flag of another country? The company will soon deploy 20 x 150-feet long vessels equipped with sophisticated instruments.
Such activity, with Chinese trawlers equipped with satellite-based tracking systems, has implications for South India, Lakshadweep, the Maldives and even Seychelles, not only in terms of fishing, but covering the whole gamut of the Chinese concept of ‘unrestricted warfare’.

#China’s total debt rises to over 300% of GDP as Beijing loosens borrowing curbs to boost growth - The figure has risen to over US$40 trillion, some 15 per cent of overall global debt, according to data released by the Institute of International Finance…
China eased its deleveraging campaign in a bid to aid the slowing economy amid the trade war with the US. China's total debt burden rose strongly in the first quarter of 2019 as Beijing allowed more loans and local government bond issuance to help shore up the slowing economy.
The figure stood at nearly 304 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in the first three months of the year, up from 297 per cent a year earlier, the US-based trade association said.

Hong Kong’s administration has backed down over the controversial extradition bill, but the canary in the coalmine of China’s tacit acceptance of democracy is already dead.
Under China’s “one country, two systems” model, Hong Kong was given the guarantee that the freedoms of its citizens would be preserved & respected. Meanwhile, for a long time in the west, the consensus was that, as its economy grew, China would start to look more like Hong Kong.

And meanwhile, both Germany and France have been advocating for a EU Army.

Secondly, Britain and the US are both members of the Five Eyes security alliance. Trump's administration would have shared their intel on #Huawei with the UK.

It is very telling that Britain did not buy in to Trump's anti-Huawei narrative that it poses a #security risk.

Trump's position was already undermined when he had said that @Huawei could be part of a trade deal with #China - apparently ignoring the "fact" that it is a #security risk. If it was such a risk, it would never be allowed to trade in the US. 3/8
