Much love @TeenVogue for sharing my story.

I came from a place where my options were limited as a young black man.

I'm only here b/c of the heroes in my life.

I'll spend the rest of my life paying their acts of kindness forward.

A personal thread..

My story wouldn't be possible were it not for the heroes I had, like my mom who sacrificed her dream so I might achieve mine.

@Twitter doesn't have enough cloud space to hold all I could write about what she means to me.

Put simply, what is best in me comes from this woman.

My 8th grade Math teacher Ms. Weise (former tennis pro then in her 2nd career) saw something in me that I could not see, that I was smart.

And yet, she knew the margin of error for black boys growing up in our town was slim where the dropout rate was 4x the national avg.

MEU India conferred the lifetime achievement award to Dr @profpiyushgupta in recognition of his substantial & meaningful contribution to #MedEd in India. He delivered the 10th #RitaSoodMemorialOration on the topic 'The Era of E-Teacher". 1/
@ProfPiyushGupta walked the audience through the evolution of e-teaching, evidence-base with a learner focus, the emergence of the e-teacher, experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the e-teacher of the future. #MedEd #CBME 2/
In the pre-COVID times, only 72 studies were found in the systematic review, but 71% of them emphasised the benefits of asynchronous learning. COVID drastically changed the attitudes of teachers, and now e-teaching is a new competrency. #MedEd #CBME 3/

What is necessary to further close the #digitaldivide and help us reach #digitalequity? We are discussing it now in our forum, sponsored by @comcast. #NULCONF22
30% of Black households do not have access to Broadband. This made it more difficult for our communities in the height of the pandemic to register to vote, be able to be counted for the Census and sign up to get vaccinated. -@PROVERBSKIDS

Who else attended today's @OECD Development Co-operation Report 2021 launch event on shaping a just #DigitalTransformation?✋

Panelists expanded upon some of the report's key themes, including:

📅 Acting now!
⬆️ More #coordination
🖼️ Strong #frameworks
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 #InclusiveDevelopment
But we also heard a lot about #DigitalPublicGoods (#DPGs). Like... A LOT a lot.

So, what's the connection between #DPGs and a just, #inclusive #DigitalTransformation? Why have so many #donors, national #governments, and #tech experts alike expressed interest in #DPG solutions?
Well, they all agree that #DigitalTransformation is at a tipping point globally, with the divisions between wealthy and developing nations especially stark: 96% of the world's unconnected people live in developing countries.

#eRUPI #UPI Vouchers for benefits is a radical departure from #DBT. Purpose and person aware #G2P payments are here. #SaveOurPrivacy
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ration_st… is digitized food stamps, but crucial digitization difference is it converts a bearer instrument like stamp / coupon into a person / purpose specific instrument, embedding automatic data emission about beneficiary upon use.
The naming of this is curious. When countries around the world are discussing #CBDC / issuing new digital currency, naming a private payment instrument #eRUPI is sign of things to come (?). One can only speculate at the moment.

Good to see the observations of the Supreme Court in the #suomoto petition on #Covid19 crisis in #India. Certain key aspects of the order released today: 1/n
The court clearly understands that there are limits for judicial intervention on policy matters. But at the same time, the court clearly indicates that there are also circumstances wherein it should intervene as a constitutional court. 2/n
The policy of Central Government wherein it
is conducting free vaccination for those above 45 years and insisting on paid vaccination by the State/UT Governments and private hospitals for persons between 18-44 years is prima facie arbitrary and irrational. 3/n

@moma's "Black Reconstructions: Prosperity and Innovation" ended w/ George Washington Carver: "Since new developments are the products of a creative mind, we must therefore stimulate and encourage that type of mind in every way possible." Many thoughts! moma.org/calendar/event…

Some things that stuck with me: 1st one from Hood, who discussed "the body as a commemorative space", e.g. a memorial tattoo for deceased loved one. ✨Also relates to "community as archive" from before and makes me think of Indigenous tattooing. nationalobserver.com/2018/08/23/the…

#VaccinationForAll
The @MoHFW_INDIA has allowed on-site registration for the 18-44 age group. This is limited to Government #COVIDVaccination centers (CVCs) at the present moment.
pib.gov.in/PressReleseDet…
#cowinregistration #VaccinationDrive #COVID19 #IndiaFightsCOVID19 Image
But this is a mere eyewash because-
1.This has been left to the discretion of the respective state/ UT governments
2.This shall be implemented only if vaccine has been left unutilised from online registrations and that too at Government CVCs.
#VaccineFor18Plus #VaccineForAll
While this has been stated in a press release, the #CoWIN website’s FAQs still state that online registration is mandatory for 18-44 age group.

So tired of @lawandeconomics argument that poor people just don't want #broadband & we don't know why. Why don't more people participate in #Lifeline? Maybe bc the subsidy is tiny & the Trump @FCC did its level best to make it hard to get. wired.com/story/opinion-…. #SubCommTech

Super disappointed in this #netneutrality column by @ShiraOvide feat @ceciliakang. It misses the mark badly in so many ways. nytimes.com/2021/02/25/tec…
@ShiraOvide @ceciliakang 2 focus on the no blocking, throttling & discrimination mandates really is seeing half the story. What the Trump @FCC did in 2017, in addition 2 repealing the #netneutrality rules, was to abdicate its legal authority 2 protect consumers & competition in the #broadband market.
@ShiraOvide @ceciliakang @FCC That legal authority (Title II) gives the @FCC the power 2 protect consumers, promote competition & close the digital divide. Every action the @FCC takes 2 strengthen #Lifeline or give $$$ for rural #broadband deployment is on shaky legal ground without Title II authority.

Wireless Bureau Chief Don Stockdale outlines the FCC's work to free up low-, mid-, and high-band spectrum under @AjitPaiFCC's tenure:

📶Low: 600, 800, and 900 MHz
📶Mid: 2.5, 3.5, 3.7-4.2 GHz
📶High: 24, 28, 37, 39, and 47 GHz

#FCCLive
The #CBand (3.7-4.2 GHz) posed an unprecedented challenge for the FCC, but the Bureau overcame a number of obstacles and made 280 MHz available for 5G use while protecting incumbent satellite users.

And the ongoing auction has generated over $80 billion, a new record. #FCCLive

✅Groundbreaking reverse auctions
✅Regulatory reforms
✅Modernizing Universal Service

"On my first full day in this job in January 2017, I convened a meeting of the FCC’s staff. ... I told the team that my number one priority as FCC Chairman would be closing the digital divide and bringing the benefits of the Internet age to all Americans." - @AjitPaiFCC
"In 1934, the U.S. government thought it was so important that every American have access to the telephone network that it created a new agency dedicated to that purpose. Now think about the countless ways that we rely on high-speed broadband connectivity today." - @AjitPaiFCC

This is definitely a problem. There are many divides. Digital divide. Then not everyone had a credit card. Not everyone has a bank account.
22% of Americans are unbanked or underbanked.

“The events of recent months relating to COVID-19 ..have brought increased attention to the digital divide...an economy that runs on the assumption that individuals have full access to traditional banking”

forbes.com/advisor/bankin…
“the unbanked and underbanked ..less education or to be in a racial or ethnic minority group, according to the Fed data. Put all of these characteristics together.. those who are unbanked and underbanked... who may have historically felt shut out of traditional banking”

Thread re: $7B for #broadband in the COVID-19 bill. Still waiting on the final bill (computer & printer problems, I'm told), but the breakdown is something like this:
1) $32B for $50 ($75 for tribal lands) monthly emergency bb benefit; 2) $1B for deployment on tribal lands 1/
3) $250M 4 telehealth; 4) $65M 4 #broadband mapping; 5) $300M grant program 4 bb in rural areas; 6) $2B for "rip & replace" (removing Chinese made equipment & replacing w. something more secure; 7) $285M for a "Connecting Minorities Community Fund," 2 expand bb in near HBCUs. 2/
There's a lot 2 celebrate in this bill, but nobody who is trying 2 close the #digitaldivide believes that this is enough. Here's what we should be most happy about: Bipartisan agreement that #broadband Internet is essential 4 full participation in society, economy, & culture. 3/

Your top priority was to weaken the FCC's authority to regulate the internet. You did that when you repealed #NetNeutrality. Meaning that when you needed to actually exercise your authority to close the #DigitalDivide in the middle of a pandemic, you had no way of doing so.
I could laugh about how bad Ajit Pai's policies have been under #COVID19 but the sad truth is that the FCC's ineptitude has real consequences. twincities.com/2020/11/10/st-…
And the programs that were designed to help people navigate crisis like the Lifeline program have been routinely targeted by Ajit Pai for reforms to weaken it. themarkup.org/ask-the-markup…

I spoke to a very upset elderly patient (more than 80 years old yesterday) who has hardly had any sleep the night before due to back pain and wanted to speak to a doctor. She was not online. I listened to her, suggested some painkillers and promised I would call her back today.
I asked her as I finished if she was online at all. She replied she wasn’t but she knew her son was. So I asked her if she would like to ask her son if he might get #recordsAccessAndUnderstanding for her. She said she would ask him and then inform me today #DigitalDivide
Today I called her back as promised and she immediately gave me her son’s telephone number eager for him to access her records. I just wanted to know how her back was and if meds I had given her had helped. (She has been waiting 6 months for epidural for lumbar stenosis)
